A lower reading level can definitely exclude certain audiences depending on your topic and type of site? General rule of thumb is to write on-level and the most effective approach here is to balance readability with context, using features like expandable glossaries, tooltips for jargon, or multi-layered content (e.g., providing an easy-to-read executive summary alongside a detailed, technical deep-dive).
Bet you can’t say “word nerd” three times fast. 😉
