I will never stop banging on about the importance of good information design, but if it's more than aesthetics, what is it exactly? Good design is good communication. It guides audiences through your strategic narrative and turns your complex industry expertise into something funders, review panels, policymakers or investors understand. If you want to influence your readers and maintain your status as the expert in the room, your document needs to master these 4 things: 1. Visual Hierarchy: Guide readers' eyes to the solution before they’ve even finished the first paragraph. Use size, weight, and colour to emphasise the important bits and whisper the details. 2. Wayfinding: Evaluation is exhausting. Help them out. Consistent headers, "golden thread" icons, and strategic call-out boxes ensure evaluators knows exactly where they are in your narrative at all times. 3. Simplifying Complexity: If you have a 4-step technical process, don't write a page of prose. Turn it into a clear, authoritative diagram. If readers can see the logic, they are more likely to trust the logic. 4. Intentional Brand Strategy: Don’t just default to templates — decide on a strategy early. Are you leading with your own brand authority or are you choosing client or funder alignment? There is a time for both, but it's important to choose visual language with purpose. The bottom line: Not investing in design is dangerous for win rates or influence (and for your reputation). Most people think the next step in business is a website. But more often than not, it’s not. What they actually need is clarity. When I say “a reusable visual system”, I don’t mean design templates or branding. I mean deciding a few basics once, so you don’t have to keep deciding them again. For example: How a slide usually starts Where headings go How much text is normal How charts are shown Once these are fixed, you reuse them every time. This saves time, reduces back-and-forth, and makes your work easier for others to follow. People don’t have to “figure out” your material — they just read it. It’s not about making things look fancy. No matter the project — social, web, print, presentations — I’m always thinking about hierarchy, spacing, contrast, and flow. Where does the eye go first? What’s clear? What’s competing? Tools change. Trends change. But strong visual communication doesn’t. That’s the part of design that makes work effective — not just good-looking.
