The 2026 American Dynamism 50 is here: our annual list of 50 companies, from within the a16z portfolio and beyond, building for America's future. This year's theme is Production is Deterrence. "America's ability to prevent conflict depends on what it can build, how fast it can deliver, and how long it can keep going." A new generation of defense companies is moving from prototypes to full-scale production, and the industrial base has to keep pace. This year's list is organized around three pillars: 1. Systems: the drones, ships, missiles, aircraft, and spacecraft that deter conflict. 2. Factories: the plants, tools, and software that build them. 3. Inputs: the materials and power they're made of and run on. Get all three right, and the impact reaches well beyond defense, to skilled jobs, revitalized communities, and the supply chains behind energy, housing, and everyday goods. Meet all 50, linked in the comments.
Most numbers in the write-up are planned production targets, like 5,000 missiles a year or a million drones by 2028, while the delivery figure I found is 105 Lancers to Ukraine. With a theme of Production is Deterrence, shipped units against rated capacity is what I'd keep tabs on
Love the list, interesting that AD 50 doesn't have any companies that make ground drone systems.
Production is deterrence. Real defense capability isn't built on software prototypes, it’s anchored in factory capacity, supply chain velocity, and domestic energy inputs.
Hang on: the 1-2-3 pillar thesis, holistic as it may be, suggests that "American Dynamism" depends (solely) on War or Deterrence Thereof. Is there nothing else? So the business of the Empire is to ...defend the Empire? That's what employs us, and that's why we build stuff? ------- (no AI was used in writing this response. just this human defender and his meager brain)
The factories and inputs categories deserve attention from founders who aren't building the final system. A tool that cuts inspection time or helps a supplier deliver consistently can matter across several industries. Curious which production bottleneck on this year's list is most accessible to a small team starting now.
Great to see A16Z catching up to this. A good primer below on El Segundo and where the US is headed: https://philmaves.substack.com/p/the-second-act-el-segundo-and-americas
Space is one of the most important industrial bases we have. Great to see Stoke Space on this list!
This is amazing! I started as employee 53
