I became deeply passionate about emotional intelligence in my early 20s and began writing books and articles around that time as I finished my dual Ph.D. program in clinical and industrial psychology. I found that most everything people were writing about EQ was too academic and difficult to apply. My goal was to give people only what they needed: great techniques for applying EQ in their own lives.
I learned and iterated and over the years I found an audience. To date I’ve sold more than 5 million books. I also built a thriving business that provided EQ tests and training to Fortune 500 companies. Then just months before COVID hit, my partner and I received a surprising offer for our business, so we sold it. I thought it would be nice to retire young. Sail off into the sunset, so to speak.
I was dead wrong. I missed my calling.
After a couple years off, I found myself researching and writing about EQ again. Times had changed, but EQ hadn’t. It’s more critical now than ever. And it isn’t something most of us are taught growing up.
There was so much more that I wanted to say. So, here I am.
I created a new, modern EQ test that greatly improved upon my previous work. I wrote an important new book (more on that below) that captured everything I’d learned during my absence. And now I’m part of a new company, LEADx, that uses this thinking to provide cutting-edge EQ tests and training to companies worldwide.

But beneath all of these lies a quieter force - one that’s often misunderstood or dismissed as “soft.” That force is 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲. Empathy isn’t just a warm feeling or a moral virtue. It’s a 𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 - a system that allow us to feel with others, distinguish their emotions from our own, imagine their perspective, regulate our reactions, and act in ways that support their wellbeing. According to Tousignant, Eugène, & Jackson (2016), empathy consists of five interrelated components: 1️⃣ Affective Sharing 2️⃣ Self-Other Distinction 3️⃣ Perspective-Taking 4️⃣ Emotion Regulation 5️⃣ Altruistic Motivation Here’s what makes empathy truly fascinating: it’s not just learned through social norms - it’s 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬. 🧬 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 - like oxytocin and serotonin systems - affects how sensitive we are to social cues. 🏡 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 - such as parenting style, attachment quality, and emotional feedback - teaches us how to interpret and respond to others. 🔁 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞-𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 - repeated social interactions actively refine the neural circuits involved in empathy. And here’s the metaphor I keep coming back to: imagine a block on an inclined plane. A horizontal force is applied. But the block doesn’t move in a straight line - it shifts based on the 𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞, the 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, and the 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐭. Empathy works the same way. Even when we apply effort - through care, listening, and presence - the outcome depends on someone’s 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (biology), their 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 (environment), and the 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 (experience). As an Adult Educator and Consultant for Learning and Performance, I see this play out constantly: • In classrooms, where learners thrive when they feel seen and safe • In organisations, where teams perform better when psychological safety is present • In leadership, where empathy transforms authority into influence The takeaway? Empathy isn’t optional. It’s the physics of human flourishing. It’s what turns classrooms into communities and workplaces into cultures of care. It’s what allows us to lead not just with strategy - but with humanity. Let’s stop treating empathy as a soft skill. Let’s start treating it as a 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 - one that can be nurtured, modelled, and embedded into the very architecture of how we teach, lead, and connect.
