Robbie Schingler shared thisSuper proud of the Planet team and our partnership with Google on the first "Hello World" of TPUs in space. And in a classicly fun Google fashion, a haiku was sent back to Earth: "Blue marble below Data streams in silent grace Starlight feeds my core. ✨" And yes, I did try to encourage the Google team to call this first quest a "Hello Planet" moment. :)Robbie Schingler shared this"Hello, world" from Project Suncatcher… On Oct 1 I posted about the launch of our prototype satellite with several of our GoogleTPUs as part of our research moonshot Project Suncatcher. A couple of days ago, we uplinked our first prompt to our onboard Gemma 4 open model during a ground-station pass, asking it to generate a haiku about being in space. As our Suncatcher prototype satellite passed by Norway, the downlinked generated poem confirmed success. Here's the haiku: Blue marble below Data streams in silent grace Starlight feeds my core. ✨ This generation was something of a “Hello, world” moment for us – our first ever TPU-generated AI response from space, 500 kilometers above the Earth, all powered by the sun. We also ran a few other generations and had the model update us on its state and provide telemetry information etc. As excited as we were to see this work (and all the engineering, problem-solving and innovations involved, along with the rigors and complications of space), it’s just the first of many milestones still to come as part of our Project Suncatcher research moonshot. There are many more engineering and science problems to solve, many unknowns, so much to learn, and more research innovation still to come. As we stated at the outset, we are building on what we’ve learned with other moonshots like Waymo and Quantum. We’re taking a rigorous, evidence-first and milestone-driven approach that will unfold over many years, as we explore the future long-term potential to harness the sun, the most powerful source of energy in our system, more directly for AI compute needed to enable useful applications here on earth and for people everywhere, far into the future. For now, this first small step and "Hello, world" moment was exciting - but there so much more still to do in the coming years. Below is our experience of the moment as we had our first interactions with our TPUs and Gemma model in space. Congratulations to my colleagues Blaise Agüera y Arcas, Travis Beals, Maria Apezteguia Biggs, Jess Toh and our whole Suncatcher team and teams across Google, as well as our satellite partner Planet Labs, and the ride up into space on SpaceX Transporter 18.

Robbie Schingler shared thisSome satellites take pictures. Tanager reads the chemistry of the planet. Each pixel holds 400+ colors of light, most invisible to humans. Together, they show what's actually on the ground and in the air: methane leaking from a well, minerals in exposed rock, stress in a forest or a crop before you can see it. A lot has happened within the last few weeks with Tanager: 🛰️ Tanager-2 launched with Carbon Mapper on October 1. Within a week, it captured its first methane plume over Spain’s Costa Blanca. https://lnkd.in/gBjBbVBY 🔬 An independent U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) check confirmed science-grade performance from a commercial satellite: 400+ spectral bands align within 0.1 pixel, locations match Landsat within ~12 meters, and spectral precision is under 1 nanometer. https://lnkd.in/gy2HX-6R 🌍 Today, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s CSDA program chose Tanager to evaluate 250,000+ km² of data for research on air quality, biodiversity, wildfires, and floods. https://lnkd.in/gHfdkzy2 ➡️ Tanager is also supplying data for California’s $95M Satellite Methane Project run by Carbon Mapper for California Air Resources Board. CARB gets plume data within 48 hours to notify operators, stopping 18 major leaks so far, including a 918 kg/hr leak fixed the day it was reported. 📚A yearlong Stanford University study found specialized satellites including Tanager-1 detected 92–100% of methane plumes on clear days, proving space-based monitoring can pinpoint major emission sources. https://lnkd.in/gtwRvNwr This is commercial space, science agencies, and regulators working together, and why we started Planet. Hyperspectral has been "the next big thing" in Earth observation for decades. I think it's finally here.Sharing First Light Images From Tanager-2 and SuperDove Flock 4JSharing First Light Images From Tanager-2 and SuperDove Flock 4J

Robbie Schingler shared thisSpace-based computing is evolving rapidly. Edge compute is here today, inference is right around the corner, and true orbital data centers will require a total convergence of space and compute roadmaps. That was my primary message at Novaspace’s World Space Business Week in Paris last week during our discussion on space-based computing and enabling AI both in orbit and on Earth. 🚀 As technologists, we know hardware development and AI innovation move on different timescales. That is precisely why we’re designing our next-gen satellites—like Owl and Pelican—with GPUs at the edge and inter-satellite links for real-time connectivity. This is the hardware foundation for Planetary Intelligence: a future where AI is directly attuned to the physical, biochemical reality of our planet. I also shared the stage for the Commercial GEOINT Evolution, with Rafal Modrzewski of ICEYE, Brian OToole of BlackSky, and John Serafini of HawkEye 360. With each of our companies operating for over a decade, we dug into how defense and security customers rely on scale, speed, upgradability, and reliability for modern ISR missions. Thank you to Pacome Revillon and the Novaspace team for hosting another exceptional week for the global space community! #WSBW26

Robbie Schingler shared thisSpace isn’t just an isolated industry—it’s the foundational Planetary Infrastructure of our modern world. The 2020s space stack looks completely different than what came before: ↳ Real-time connectivity across constellations ↳ Compute directly at the sensor and in orbit ↳ Full-spectrum sensing of human activity, natural disasters, and seasonal change This infrastructure enables a new kind of planetary utility—one that feeds context and intelligence straight into our governments, enterprises, and communities. When historic and real-time Earth data fuse with AI that actually understands physical planetary realities, we stop just monitoring the world and start guiding human activity for effective action.Robbie Schingler shared thisPlanetary Intelligence integrates global satellite imagery with AI to bridge the gap between awareness and meaningful, timely action. Robbie Schingler shared thisThe TED Conferences stage has always been a place for bold ideas about the future, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share Planet’s vision of Planetary Intelligence. In this talk, I outline how sensors in space, real-time connectivity and computation will power a kind of planetary nervous system. And that Earth Data when combined with LLMs and AI can create a Large Earth Model - an AI that is keenly aware of the physical reality of what’s happening on our changing planet. But ultimately, this is about embracing these technologies as a farmer, an insurer, a development banker, or an intelligence analyst. Transforming our workflows to be more planetarily aware and has the potential to evolve and create new institutions and companies on our dynamic, living planet. This is the third time Planet have been on the TED mainstage - the first time in 2014 to announce our Daily Imaging Mission and the second one in 2018 - quite prescient in today’s age of AI - discussing Earth Data and AI (links below in comments). But our mission is consistent; from the beginning, Planet has been on a mission to create a new way of seeing Earth, providing an independent source of truth about what’s happening around our world every day. Now, with the rise of AI, we have an opportunity to transform that understanding into action. Thank you to the TED team and everyone who has helped bring this vision to life. Robbie Schingler shared thisEnglish Version During Semana Geomática in Colombia, I had the opportunity to meet with Instituto Geográfico Agustín Codazzi (IGAC) and discuss their Observatorio de la Tierra y el Territorio (OTT) platform. The OTT platform consolidates access to satellite data within a single system, optimizing state resources and strengthening coordination across critical areas such as cadastre, urban development, and disaster response. It serves as a prime example of how public institutions can transform territorial management through shared, high-impact technology. Combining Planet's daily Earth observation data with advanced AI capabilities enables the expansion of these technical tools - delivering precise, accessible spatial analysis directly to public institutions and users on the ground. Honored with the 2026 LATAM Planet Innovation Award, IGAC’s OTT platform stands as a benchmark solution for Latin America and a leading model for regional geospatial governance. Robbie Schingler liked thisRobbie Schingler liked thisWhen I was a kid, I imagined we’d have lunar bases long before solving artificial intelligence. As it turns out, history happened the other way round. Now, both frontiers are converging. This week marks a major milestone for my team’s moonshot, Project Suncatcher: we powered on our orbital compute chassis and ran our first TPU inference workloads in space. In software, “Hello, World” is the classic proof-of-life moment. For our test, the prompts themselves were simple, but the engineering behind them is intense. A query was sent from a ground station into low Earth orbit, computed on a TPU operating in a vacuum powered directly by the sun, and sent back down. Suncatcher is a long-term moonshot. We’re standing at the foothills of an immense mountain that stretches decades into the future. Today isn't the summit—it’s base camp. But we are now officially on the mountain. Huge gratitude to the Paradigms of Intelligence team, Planet Labs, and everyone across Google who needed both technical conviction in the idea and faith in us to make this happen. Hello, World—from orbit.

Robbie Schingler liked thisRobbie Schingler liked thisAt SpaceBound last week, I noticed a pattern in the ministers' speeches: communications and navigation were treated as critical infrastructure. Earth observation was not. Minister Joly spoke about sovereign and critical infrastructure through connectivity: subsea cables, fibre, spectrum, and communications satellites. She also announced Canada's first positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) framework, calling PNT "critical to our economy and security." EO came up only as "space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance." Interestingly, The strongest case for EO's civil value came from the Minister of National Defence. Minister McGuinty described how satellites watch over Canada's forests, fresh water, coastlines, and Arctic, and pointed to the $688M RCM replenishment contract with MDA. So the roles were reversed. The defence minister made the civil case for EO, while the minister responsible for the Canadian Space Agency mentioned EO only as defence intelligence. But ISR is something the military relies on, whereas critical infrastructure is something the whole economy relies on. If EO enters a new space strategy only as ISR, it won't be named critical infrastructure. Framing can seem like a small thing, but what gets named as critical infrastructure gets protected, funded, procured, etc. This week I'm at the Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne's National Earth Observation Forum to hopefully, in part, better make the case that EO is critical infrastructure. If you're there, come find me! Thank you to Space Canada | Espace Canada for bringing the Canadian space community together again. And yes, the photo in Mission Control's moon room is now an annual tradition. #EarthObservation #SpaceBound2026 #cdnspace

We’ve raised a $215M Series A led by Lightspeed to bring frontier AI out of the browser and into the lab, and build scientific capacity here in America. I co-founded Warp with my long-time friend DJ Patil, FAIR co-founder Manohar Paluri, and drug hunter Solomon Reisberg. The early team is full of incredible people like Brian Spears, who helped achieve Q>1 fusion at LLNL. Here's why we're building Warp Sciences: 1. Robotic labs will let us do science at massive scale—and generate the data to train amazing AI models for science. 2. We need to reshore critical scientific capabilities from China, so we don’t lose our pharma industry the way we did solar, drones, and manufacturing. We are building a next-generation preclinical CRO, in America, to make and test molecules for companies developing new medicines. We’re not developing drugs of our own. We’re building the infrastructure for the people who do. We’re starting with real chemists doing real work for real customers. We’ll progressively automate that work, with our scientists helping build the tools and proving them in the lab, one workflow at a time. More automation lets us run more experiments and generate the data to train better science models. Better models help us design better experiments and automate more of the work. The lab improves the AI, and the AI improves the lab. We wrote more about this here: https://lnkd.in/g4k3eeEf Joining Lightspeed in the round are Premji Invest, IVP, Mayfield, 01 Advisors, Lux Capital, Menlo Ventures, Standard VC, Avenir Group, Scribble Ventures, Conviction, Gigascale Capital, Angular Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, Uncork Capital, Innovation Endeavors, Liquid 2 Ventures, Matter VP, Zero Shot Fund, Westbound, Moxxie Ventures, Chapter One, Friends & Family Capital, SignalFire, 500 Global, Kearny Jackson, Formus Capital, and Fifth Down Capital. We’re also joined by an incredible group of angels, including Fidji Simo, Mark Chen, Mike Krieger, Brian Armstrong, Lulu Cheng Meservey, Dylan Field, Milan Kovac, Ion Stoica, Brendan Foody, Sarah Friar, Kate Rouch, Deepak Pathak, Sebastien Bubeck, Parag Agrawal, Shyam Sankar, Bob McGrew, Reid Hoffman, Lachy Groom, and many more. These are people we’ve learned from, built alongside, and admired for years. We’re excited to have them with us. We have a lot to build and a lot to prove. Holistic space observation: the shift from SSA to SDA Recent reporting on SpaceX’s proposal to deploy up to one million satellites in low Earth orbit — paired with a vision of AI-enabled, autonomous orbital infrastructure — marks a decisive moment for the space community. Regardless of whether these numbers ultimately materialize, the direction is unmistakable: space is moving toward unprecedented scale, autonomy and strategic importance. That reality demands a fundamental reassessment of what space awareness really means....

The post-ISS transition has a dependency problem that few are discussing openly. At IAC 2026's Global Networking Forum, the CEOs of Axiom Space, Vast, Starlab and Blue Origin's Orbital Reef programme addressed it directly. With one major crew vehicle reportedly exiting the commercial station market and NASA's Phase 2 RFP for Commercial LEO Destinations now roughly a year late, the path to operational successors is less certain than public timelines suggest. The session also covered Artemis II technical lessons, Leonardo's data-centric constellation strategy, Aselsan's AstraLink specifications and a frank assessment of where emerging space powers stand relative to the two leading ones. If you work in space industry strategy, policy or programme management, this recap is worth your time. https://lnkd.in/dEgEt3Mw #SpaceIndustry #IAC2026 #CommercialSpace #Artemis #NewSpace https://lnkd.in/dEgEt3Mw

Commercial satellite networks can provide “faster, better, cheaper” capabilities in space & on Earth & can make tremendous contributions to comprehensive national power & prosperity. Outdated policies, unresponsive bureaucracy, & uncertain timelines can stifle those commercial forces & allow rival systems (like China) to get ahead. But fortunately, it appears US policy is moving in the right direction!

A French launch startup is looking into defense applications for its hybrid propulsion technologies. HyPrSpace raised 21 million euros ($24.7 million) in an oversubscribed Series A round last month, with plans to use the funding to complete a suborbital rocket, Baguette One, that is a precursor to its small orbital launch vehicle, OB-1. Those rockets use hybrid propulsion systems the company has developed with plastic fuel and liquid oxygen. The company says defense customers are showing interest in its hybrid motors for other, unspecified uses, replacing the liquid oxygen with storable oxidizers like nitrous oxide or hydrogen peroxide. HyPrSpace is planning to launch Baguette One in the first half of 2026 with the first OB-1 launch set for late 2027. [SpaceNews] https://lnkd.in/dFHMbP-8

Federated SAR Constellations and the Next Layer of Maritime Security Satellite sensing is entering a structural transition. For decades, space-based observation relied primarily on individual national constellations or isolated commercial systems. While effective, these architectures shared a fundamental limitation: revisit frequency. Even the most advanced satellites cannot maintain persistent observation across vast maritime areas. That paradigm is beginning to change. A new operational concept is emerging in the space domain: federated satellite architectures. Instead of relying on a single constellation, multiple sovereign or commercial satellite systems can operate within shared tasking frameworks and interoperable data infrastructures. Each participant retains sovereign control over its assets while benefiting from significantly expanded sensing coverage. The result is a meaningful shift in persistent maritime awareness. Federated constellations reduce revisit gaps, expand monitoring capacity and improve the ability to observe large maritime regions such as Exclusive Economic Zones, where enforcement challenges are often defined by scale rather than technology. However, this new sensing capacity introduces an important operational shift. As observation becomes more persistent, detection is no longer the primary constraint. Response becomes the limiting factor. Detecting vessels operating in sensitive maritime areas is valuable, but without the ability to verify, track and respond in a timely manner, sensing alone cannot fully enforce maritime sovereignty. The next phase of maritime security will likely emerge from the integration of three operational layers: • Space-based sensing architectures • Automated data fusion and maritime intelligence • Distributed response platforms operating closer to the surface In that sense, maritime domain awareness is evolving from observation networks into integrated operational ecosystems. Federated satellite constellations may become one of the key catalysts accelerating that transformation. #MaritimeSecurity #MaritimeDomainAwareness #SpaceSecurity #SyntheticApertureRadar #GeospatialIntelligence #DefenseInnovation
