🐶 Nate Shapiro reposted this🐶 Nate Shapiro reposted thisI'm hiring, and I'm excited about these two roles!!! My team at Meta builds the scalable testing systems and AI-powered quality tooling that keep our products reliable for billions of people. We're rethinking what quality engineering looks like when AI is part of the toolkit. Moving fast, with intention. Two openings: 💙 Software Engineers who want to build test infrastructure and AI-driven tooling at real scale. 💙 Testers / QA Engineers who think deeply about product quality and want to shape how AI-assisted testing actually works. If you're curious about the problem, comfortable with ambiguity, and you'd rather build something reusable than solve the same thing twice, apply away! 🐶 Nate Shapiro reposted this🐶 Nate Shapiro reposted thisAfter pivoting to mobile, Horizon Worlds made a quiet comeback in 2025. Over the past year, Meta’s platform has experienced an influx of users and user activity, with monthly active mobile users increasing by four times year-over-year and in-game purchases seeing a 280% bump. The secret behind this comeback, according to both Meta and Horizon Worlds creators, is the company’s conscious decision to shift from a virtual reality focus to a mobile-based user experience in late 2024. In Tower Zen, we explored new ground by using a fully animated, stylized character that takes the place of your Horizon avatar during gameplay. This marks a first for Horizon Worlds. We aimed to keep familiar controls while blending traditional avatar presence with a custom, immersive animation experience. The result is a more expressive, focused journey that fits the meditative style of the game while pushing the platform’s creative boundaries. 🐶 Nate Shapiro liked this🐶 Nate Shapiro liked this☀️ Life Update ☀️ I was laid off from Meta in May, and while it was bittersweet, it was also the push I needed to step into the next phase of my career and life. ✈️ Life is short, and I decided it was time to pursue my own creative projects, even for a short while. It might take me years to make my own game, or write a novel, but those dreams will never materialize if I keep delaying and never take the first step. 🗺️ My days now are pretty cool. I am working on an indie puzzle game with a small team. We've been at it for a few months with one major design reset. We are planning to build the entire game by hand, the old-fashioned way, by experts in design, narrative, art, and audio. I'm utilizing AI to help me learn new skills. I'm learning Unreal right now, in fact! 💻 My days are much more evenly split between game development, household and family time, and self-care, health, and community. I'm working, but also finding more mental space and time to breathe. 👨👩👧👦 🎮 Steam Next Fest 🎮 That being said, I'm posting because our team had been planning to enter our project into a future Steam NextFest, which is a special event to demo upcoming titles. The October NextFest just finished, and we are hearing things like: - Developers are withdrawing game demos due to fears of being copied quickly by others using AI 😱 - AI disclosures are a mixed bag - inconsistently used by developers, self-reported without accuracy enforcement, and AI involvement changes customer expectations 🔍 - It's growing harder to tell what is made by AI and what isn't, and that's scary as a developer 😿 As a small indie team that was hoping to utilize NextFest for awareness, this changes the landscape significantly. What if we work for a year on a project, only for customers to claim our work is AI? What is the point of crafting by hand if customers can't tell or appreciate the difference anyway? How do we share our game ahead of its release without risking it being copied? Is NextFest still a good way to get our name out there? 😕 We are still a long ways off from having anything to share, but this has been weighing on my mind. So this post is part life update, and part asking the collective hive mind for advice. What should small indie devs do? How would you adapt? 🆘 * I wrote this post by hand. All words and emoji choices are my own. *

🐶 Nate Shapiro liked this🐶 Nate Shapiro liked thisHappy to share I can finally remove my green profile border. More on that soon! It's been a hell of a time since the closure of Intrepid. This year came with a lot of unexpected growth, and I'm very happy to be closing this chapter and starting the next. There are still so many capable, passionate, and invaluable developers displaced by the current state of the gaming industry, looking for their next opportunity... All I can say is that hope is a powerful tool, so do your best to hold on to it. I almost threw mine away, but my friends helped keep my resolve strong when I needed it most. Keep at it, and lean on others in the industry. You'd be there for them, so let them be there for you. We go again, K

🐶 Nate Shapiro liked this🐶 Nate Shapiro liked thisOutside of the occasional comment, I've been quiet lately. My focus has mostly been on what's next. The game industry is going through a transition, and I believe many of us are still digesting the implications. It's exciting that more and more small teams are building content, with or without AI. However, the consequent overabundance means that few studios can be confident about outcomes. The industry isn't dying, indeed top-line growth continues, but the security of the component companies is eroding at every tier. There will be no shortage of new break-outs (good luck guessing which), but enduring success is harder than ever. As much as I'm a champion for independent studios, I believe that companies with existing IP, existing audiences, and deep pockets will likely weather this transition the best. I hope to catch up with many of you at Gamesbeat in San Francisco next week! The next post you see from me will be shamelessly promoting the sessions I'm participating in -- sincere thanks to the Gamesbeat team for hosting the event and for giving me an opportunity to participate!

🐶 Nate Shapiro liked this🐶 Nate Shapiro liked thisThere's a huge difference between vibe coding, and AI-assisted development. We see cool tech demos everyday that are vibe coded with one-shot prompts but that's all they are - tech demos. I don't think I've many (any?) successful 0-to-1 products that have been vibecoded or one-shot prompted. However, AI-assisted development is the future because it gives humans time back to focus on the important problems. The real problems. A mentor once told me how he prioritized his day and he said, "I focus on the existential problems that could kill our startup today." We now have more time to think, to brainstorm, to be creative, to bring our visions to life. When was the last time we said, "I wish that coding task took me 100 hours instead of 5!" By essentially tasking specialized models with the "laborious" parts of development, we're able to focus on the real problems: what's the vision of our product? What hypothesis do we want to test next? How does the product look and feel? What problems are we solving for users/players? Is there a demand for our idea? What should the architecture and tech stack be? Every discipline gets time back to think about building the best possible product and everyone has a role to play. Real AI-assisted development still takes sweat and tears to produce a successful product. It still takes 1000s of iterations. But, our odds of creating a successful product have increased because we're able to focus on the real problems that could sink a new idea. Unfortunately, it seems a lot of people have decided the opposite. We want to make the "laborious" part of development precious and things that humans do, and instead we've handed creativity, taste, and decision making to AI models. I hope a few teams think about this the next time they simply reply "yes," or "continue," to their AI agents. Let's not give up the decisions that could make our products special.

🗣️ When the interviewer isn’t human… I posted a little while back about having gone through an AI-led voice interview - and it was, honestly, unsettling. No follow-up questions. No acknowledgement. Just a perfectly modulated voice reading a script and waiting for my response. As someone who’s spent years in Talent Acquisition, I couldn’t help analyzing it as it happened. Was the system capturing keywords? Tone? Pauses? Or just ticking boxes? This week I saw that Phenom launched a new “Conversational Voice Screening Agent”; a tool that supposedly adapts its questions and tone based on the type of role being hired. In a pilot, it helped reduce time-to-hire by about a day and boosted candidate engagement. Impressive metrics, but it raised a bigger question for me. (https://lnkd.in/dcdcPtGX) Efficiency is easy to measure. Empathy isn’t. And while automation helps eliminate repetitive tasks - sourcing, scheduling, initial screening, I’m not convinced we should let it replace human warmth in those early moments. In markets like the UAE and GCC, where multilingual hiring and personal connection are so vital, the risk is that candidates start to feel like they’re talking at the process rather than being part of it. AI in recruitment is here to stay. The question is how we design it; as a wall between candidates and recruiters, or as a bridge that makes every human interaction more meaningful. 💬 Have you ever done an AI interview yourself? What stood out - efficiency or emptiness (or something else)? #TalentAcquisition #AIinRecruitment #CandidateExperience #FutureOfWork #RecruitmentTechnology #EmployerBrand

I keep seeing posts about "here's how to sound like a leader". Don't say "what do you think" say "if you have concerns, raise them with me". What a bunch of nonsense. Perhaps those phrases do make someone sound more confident or polished, but they don't make you "sound like a leader". What sound do leaders make?! You don’t need a script to be a good leader. Be clear, trust people to do their jobs, admit when you mess up. That's all that is. The exact words matter far less than whether your behaviour is genuine.

The news has been full of "industry corrections" and layoffs to start the year off. It’s heavy, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned after all this time, it’s that the people in this industry are the most resilient group I know. Now we have things like Google’s Project Genie popping up, making everyone panic that AI is going to "generate" the future of gaming. Look, a 60-second interactive clip with no audio or mechanics is a cool tech demo, but it isn't a game. You can’t automate the soul of a project or the years of intentional design that go into a real player experience. We build worlds from scratch and fix things that seem impossible to break. To everyone out there grinding through the uncertainty: your skills are real and your perspective matters. Tech like Genie is just another tool for the shed, not a replacement for the person holding the hammer. Keep your head up, stay focused on the work, and remember that even the messiest builds can turn into something great if you don't quit.
