Loved connecting with Sindhu Gangadharan about how we help our customers co-innovate and turn big ideas into real business impact.   One of my favorite examples is a customer who introduced a brilliantly simple 0-1-2 innovation approach: 🔹 0 – “Zero customization.” Use the standard product as is. 🔹 1 – “One approval.” If customization is needed, it requires CFO sign-off and will be done as extension using SAP BTP. 🔹 2 – “Two in a box.” The entire transformation is a joint responsibility between IT and the Business.   This model helped the customer deliver on time, avoid unnecessary complexity, and drive meaningful transformation. It also enabled them to work more efficiently and create needed use cases based on their business challenges. With Customer Innovation Services, we built and deployed innovative extensions on SAP BTP – keeping everything natively integrated and turning innovation into a true strategic advantage.   These types of extensions are essential for customers looking to stay differentiated. Wednesday Wisdom from RV’s desk 1. India Inc. is carrying a silent burden: the middle layer of managers, largely in the 40+ age bracket, who have been in the same role for over a decade. 2. While the world moves with disruptive technologies and market shifts, many in this segment remain rooted in the comfort zones of yesterday. 3. This is not about loyalty or tenure. It is about stagnation. A sizeable chunk of this workforce has not scaled beyond their current roles. The result is a “fat in the middle”—a layer that slows organizational agility and nullifies productivity norms. 4. The paradox is real: what is measured often isn’t measurable, and what isn’t measurable rarely gets reviewed. Efficiency metrics become a moving target, and enterprises chase dashboards while value creation quietly slips away. 5. This inertia is not invisible. Across industries, middle management is being questioned. The shift towards flatter organizations, automation, and AI-driven decision making has already begun eroding this comfort zone. What once was considered indispensable is now being called into review. 6. For individuals in this bracket, the challenge is sharper. The thought of an alternative career path seems Herculean. Reskilling, entrepreneurship, or even lateral transitions look intimidating. Yet the reality is unavoidable—standing still in a world that moves fast is not stability; it is decline. 7. The pressing question: Should this mass continue to move directionless under the garb of “strategy,” or should it reinvent itself with relevance as the compass? 8. Relevance demands deliberate action: • Re-skill continuously: AI, digital, cloud, sustainability—choose one, but achieve mastery. • Adopt process discipline: move from executing tasks to owning outcomes. • Seek lateral enrichment: explore new industries, not just vertical promotions. • Build entrepreneurial muscles: embrace intrapreneurship or startups to remain nimble. • Measure what matters: shift from vanity KPIs to impact-driven metrics. 9. India’s demographic dividend cannot afford a demographic drag. When the middle layer becomes stagnant, the pyramid weakens from within. For the individual, tenure without reinvention becomes a career trap. For the enterprise, it becomes a barrier to agility. 10. The world is unforgiving to complacency. The real test is not how long you’ve stayed in a role, but how much you have evolved within it. 11. I see it very often across mid-size and large family-managed businesses too. 𝗜𝗻𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 ≠ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁. I’ve seen this happen more than I can count. A thriving family business. Decades of brand, value, goodwill. But the moment it’s time to pass the baton - it drops. Quietly. Not because the business is weak but because the next generation just isn’t interested. And they’re not wrong either. They’ve grown up in a different world.  Different exposures. Different aspirations. What gave the founders purpose doesn’t always give their children pride. Many businesses expect continuity out of emotion. But what they don’t realise is that succession is not emotional. It’s structural. You can’t assume your children want the same journey just because they share your surname. And I’ve seen this very closely across several clients and even large public examples where years of work are paused, diluted, or sold off because legacy planning was built on assumptions, not systems. Here's why this happens: 1. Younger leaders today want identity, not just inheritance. 2. Purpose has replaced loyalty as the driver of contribution. 3. The baton is handed over late, while t should be shaped years in advance. 4. There's no structured roadmap, just emotional expectation. 5. FMB often professionalise late. By the time they do, interest has already left the room. And the real challenge is professionalising leadership so that businesses outgrow surnames. Legacy thrives when family businesses learn to balance emotion with execution. Which is why the real question for family businesses isn’t just about who inherits, but about how prepared the system is to make them succeed. And if you're a family business owner - here’s where to start: [1] Build a handover strategy 3–5 years before you plan to exit. [2] Define roles clearly - don’t expect them to “figure it out.” [3] Involve external professionals early not when crisis hits. [4] Let the next generation reimagine the business not just inherit it. [5] Make them shadow, contribute, lead small parts and grow into it. [6] Put strong ERP systems & clear policies in place so buyers or future stakeholders can run the business effectively.
