Dan Mindus liked thisDan Mindus liked thisThis week in free speech is a reminder that academic freedom involves more than protecting people from being formally censored. It also means protecting them from compelled speech, ideological conformity, and institutional retaliation. A University of Washington professor who challenged his school’s land-acknowledgement requirement has now won a $600,000 settlement. Another professor says she was fired after teaching a short story. And the same basic tensions appear well beyond American campuses, from a Canadian court rejecting a compelled apology to the censorship of information from Tibet. Also inside: 🔥 Why weakening tenure may make higher ed’s ideological problems worse 🔥 The life of hardcore punk legend and free-speech champion Lou Koller 🔥 New fights over politics and expression on campus 🔥 China’s efforts to control speech at home — and even at a religious event in Texas 🔥 A Thai activist sentenced to prison for insulting the monarchy Free speech means little if institutions can simply punish dissent, compel agreement, or make certain ideas too costly to express. See it all in this weekend’s update: https://lnkd.in/eqHVMM88FIRE wins big W at UW, Higher ed’s problems are worse than you think (and why tenure won’t fix them!), Nico has a new book for 2027, & more!FIRE wins big W at UW, Higher ed’s problems are worse than you think (and why tenure won’t fix them!), Nico has a new book for 2027, & more!

I ask ChatGPT: How long should I cook this steak (I take a picture of it)? Chat: 5 minutes at blah blah Hey Chat, the steak was undercooked. Could you tell me what I did wrong? Ok, thanks, I got it. Next time I'll get it right, my bad. I ask Claude: Scan the 5,000 leads we received this month and identify the 30 best founders. What sectors are they in? Great. I like this on. Can you scan the market and identify any other companies doing this? Oh, can you also scan all university research over the past 3 years and see what other researchers are working on this? Wait, you forgot a company in this space that I know. Claude: You are right, Company X is one I should have found, sorry about that. WTF Claude. Rerun everything you have done, and THIS time, make sure you do not miss any companies. Can you write a quick memo the company I can share with the team? Claude: We've been going for quite some time; you may want to start another chat. MEMORY?!? CLAUDE! COME on, man?!?!? I just can't right now. Anyone else experiencing this?

Dan Mindus liked thisDan Mindus liked thisI’ve been under the hood of dozens and dozens of companies, perhaps hundreds. And every one has had a plan. And none of them went according to it. That's not a criticism, it’s just fact. But the plan ALWAYS matters. When you're raising capital, for example, it signals that you've done your homework — that you understand the market, the product, the model. Investors aren't just funding a business, they're betting on you and your conviction. Your plan is how you demonstrate that. But every founder knows what happens next. The market doesn't behave the way you predicted. A customer tells you something that reframes everything. An opportunity shows up that wasn't in your slides. Suddenly the question isn't whether your plan is right or wrong — it's whether you're willing to listen to what the business is telling you. The entrepreneurial journey has always been about that tension. Enough conviction to move forward. Enough flexibility to hear the signals around you and adjust. Gravity Insights is my most personal version of that lesson. I assumed it would be mostly business advisory. Then Georgetown’s leadership coaching program changed my life and coaching became central to the work. Then a chance coffee with an ADHD coach opened a door I didn't know existed. None of this was in the original plan, and all of it made the work more meaningful — and more effective — than what I’d originally imagined. I tried early on to write a formal growth plan for the firm, but it somehow felt wrong. I think because it felt too limiting. So I stopped. This one I decided to let evolve — and to trust that it would organically take shape exactly how it’s supposed to, as long as I was following my gut, my heart, and my head together. And it has, and continues to evolve. Every six months I look up and something has shifted a little — the clients, the problems, the way I describe what I do, my interests. That's not drift, but rather my work telling me something. And the most successful founders I’ve known are constantly learning and adapting, recognizing when their plan needs updating. Failure? It's part of it. Who cares. That’s just how this works. gravityinsightsgroup.comGravity Insights | Strategic Advisor & Executive CoachGravity Insights | Strategic Advisor & Executive Coach

Dan Mindus liked thisDan Mindus liked thisThank you, James Price and Jeff Baietto, M.A. for a beautiful Basecamp leadership retreat in Idyllwild, California. Being part of Jeff and James’ Basecamp experience has helped me on my journey to bring consciousness to leadership. The 7-month program with an intimate group of social impact leaders from across the country is dedicated to fostering light and deepening human connection through relational inquiry and self-awareness. We explore life’s most pressing challenges and most meaningful growth opportunities by reassessing beliefs that are often inherited or unconsciously adopted for survival purposes. For me personally, this experience has allowed me to show up more fully, vulnerably, and with purpose—all in community with others. The next Basecamp cohort is launching next month. Highly recommend if you are looking for a transformative program that goes deep into what it means to be in alignment with your purpose and higher consciousness with the support of a committed community. Dan Mindus liked thisDan Mindus liked thisAs we wrap up the bulk of our first selection process at Mountaintop this week, I'm feeling thankful for the dozens of leadership fellowships, universities, and entrepreneurship networks that shared our application. We received overwhelming interest ahead of our September 30th deadline — 6,153 candidates from 155 countries representing 98.6% of the global population started an application, and 1,869 completed our entire application, including two essays and eight short responses. Moreover, I'm deeply inspired by the amazing stories of our candidates. From former Members of Parliament, former mayors, Nobel Peace Prize Nominees, and presidential candidates, to hospital directors in low income rural communities, humanitarians working for peace in conflict zones, indigenous leaders fighting to protect land rights, and refugees building youth leadership initiatives, our candidates are united by a common vision — strengthening the "human infrastructure" of their home communities so that local people can solve local problems. But perhaps what is most exciting is that the fellowship application reached people who are usually least likely to access programs such as ours. According to voluntary self reported data, 60% of candidates come from families making less than $2.15/day (the World Bank's extreme poverty line) and 67% from families where neither parent graduated from university. For too long, the international community has ignored the power of local leaders to solve the challenges that they know best. It is time that we listen, and do whatever we can to support their visions.

#MoxieAwardDC finalist Foxstead Partners is a private equity firm that made its boldest bet by refusing to take control. Built specifically for the government contracting world, the Reston firm backs founder-led small businesses with minority, non-voting stakes and private credit, taking no board seats and dictating no hires or vendors. Under the leadership of managing partner Greg Mattingly, four partners with a combined century of sector experience act as operating coaches rather than overlords, rolling up their sleeves alongside founders while leaving every decision in their hands. Foxstead specializes in the hardest transition a small contractor faces, graduating from set-aside work into full and open competition. In an industry built on control, choosing not to take any is the moxie. Eric Rafail, Ian Joseph, Sara Mayes, and Paula Smithers, CPA led this interview. #MoxieAwardDC #BoldnessinBusiness

In this episode of The DMV Business Show, we welcome John A. Elko, MBA, SAFe 6, Founder and CEO of GigShift, a platform aiming to revolutionize staffing for restaurants and bars. John shares the inspiration behind GigShift, which is akin to a rideshare app for food service, connecting businesses in urgent need of skilled staff with nearby experienced contractors. Drawing from his own deep roots in the restaurant industry and a long career in the Army, he recounts how challenges in both arenas shaped his idea and approach to entrepreneurship. He discusses the practicalities of the app, focusing on its flexibility for contractors and efficiency for business owners, as well as the hurdles of launching a tech solution in a traditional industry. The episode also explores John's personal journey, his family's legacy in food service, the difficulties of military life, and the transition into building a business from scratch. Listeners get a candid behind-the-scenes look at the startup world, the importance of resilience, and the power of saying yes to new opportunities. Northern Virginia startup Trase just emerged from stealth with a $10.5M pre-seed round — and a different approach to AI integration. Cofounded by Joe L. and Grant Verstandig and headquartered in McLean, Trase is tackling some of the hardest industries to insert automation into: healthcare and national security. The startup's big differentiator: Instead of charging upfront, the company only bills clients if its tech actually makes them more efficient. And it seems to be working. For example, Trase said it helped boost prescription refill turnaround time 3x at Duke Health, saving $193K and nearly 5,500 hours a year. The pre-seed was backed by Red Cell Partners and Virginia Venture Partners out of the state-affiliated Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eAcsDxRt

🎤 I'm joining DC Startup & Tech Week (Formerly DC Startup Week) Workshop Wednesdays on September 16th to talk about something every founder needs to learn right now: how to actually use AI to grow your startup. 🤖 🛠️ Most startups are experimenting with AI tools. But the founders who are winning are the ones building real workflows around them, automating the repetitive stuff, making faster decisions with better data, and scaling without adding headcount. 💡🔥 As Founder & CEO of IdeaFire™ and Lead Mentor at Founder Institute DC, Bangkok, Caribbean, and Berlin, I've spent over two decades helping executives, startups, and investors utilize technology and digital strategy to accelerate innovation and drive growth. In this session, I'll show you exactly how to leverage Google's latest AI tools for practical startup use cases you can act on immediately. 🦾 If you're a founder or operator looking to do more with less, this one's for you. 👉 Join me live next Wednesday: https://luma.com/d3v5w72z #DCSTW #AItools #StartupGrowth #FounderLife #GenerativeAI #AgenticAI #Innovation #IdeaFire IdeaFire™

The pace of development across the dual-use and national security technology ecosystem in the National Capital Region is incredibly exciting — and nowhere is that momentum more visible than here in Northern Virginia and National Landing. In a recent Virginia Business feature on the growth of Virginia’s government contracting and defense technology startup ecosystem, Virtus Innovation Center Co-founder Andrew Lackner spoke to the remarkable concentration of emerging companies taking shape in the region: “I don’t think there’s a higher density of emerging defense tech anywhere else in the world.” That density matters. National Landing sits at a unique intersection of entrepreneurs, venture capital, national security customers, leading technology companies, academia, and government — creating an environment where founders building mission-critical technologies can connect with the partners, capital and customers needed to move faster. At Virtus Innovation Center, we’re excited to be part of this rapidly developing ecosystem and to help make National Landing a destination for the next generation of companies building technologies that strengthen our national security, economic resilience and energy future. Thank you to Virginia Business for highlighting the extraordinary momentum underway across Northern Virginia! This moment hit me hard in our conversation. Alan had mentioned mentors three times already—the wrestling coach, the guys at the bar, the lawyers who shaped him. And here's someone who others now look up to as a legend, still calling himself a student, still learning AI, going back to finish his college degree later in life. The combination of seeking mentorship AND staying hungry to learn—two of the key ingredients we all need in our recipe. You're never too successful to have a mentor. You're never too accomplished to be a student. VC in DC

In 2025, VC in DC leaned hard into where this region truly overindexes: #dualuse technology, #defense, and #missiondriven companies building at the intersection of #government and #commercial markets. That focus showed up most clearly in our Missions & Markets series, where we teamed up with Arlington Economic Development and brought startups and investors together in highly curated, 1:1 matchmaking sessions. These weren’t pitch events, they were real conversations between builders, operators, and capital partners who understand how deployment actually happens in government-adjacent markets. One of DC’s real superpowers is its density of corporate venture capital #CVC, strategics, and operators who view government as a primary or secondary buyer—and know how to navigate that path thoughtfully. We’re incredibly grateful for the investors who continue to show up and support founders building serious, consequential technology. Huge shout-outs to some of the founders in this video pushing these ecosystems forward—Brian C. O'Connor (Darksaber Labs), Tucker Dordevic (Oureon Technologies), Alexis Harroun, Ph.D. (Juno Propulsion Inc.), Ian Gauger (Circle Optics, Inc.), Tiarne Hawkins (Optica Labs Inc)—and to investors like Michael Hauser at SAIC Ventures, along with many others who help make this ecosystem work. Looking ahead to 2026, we’re expanding this effort, but with a very specific intention. The goal of hosting events in New York, Austin, and other markets we’re actively exploring isn’t to move away from #DC, it’s to show what DC has to offer, bring more attention to this ecosystem, and create stronger connective tissue between builders, capital, and partners across regions. We believe DC’s model, mission-first, operator-led, and grounded in real buyer behavior, deserves a bigger spotlight. Bringing these conversations to other markets is about reinforcing that story and further supporting the founders building here. And a huge thank you to our partners who continue to make all of these opportunities happen: J.P. Morgan, Upstate Venture Connect, FinStrat Management, CSC Leasing, Carta, HawkEye 360, VIPC | Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation, Pillsbury Propel, Arlington Economic Development Shoutout LGND on the video!
