Mark Phillip liked thisMark Phillip liked thisSo I pitched TrackBloom at Reeperbahn Festival a few weeks ago. I didn’t win. “Too niche” was one of the comments. I get where that comes from. It’s probably also the part I didn’t manage to explain properly in five minutes. What I didn’t expect was what happened after the pitch. Several people came over to talk properly about what I’m building. Not about the result. They were genuinely curious about the problem and how I’m approaching it. Those conversations meant more to me than the competition outcome. Pitch competitions can make it feel like the five minutes on stage are the whole thing. But the useful part is often everything around it: being in a room with people who understand the world you’re working in, and finding a few who want to keep the conversation going afterwards. No prize, but a few real conversations that are still going. I’ll take that.

Mark Phillip reacted on thisMark Phillip reacted on thisBIG announcement - on the heels of my 15-year work anniversary, I am leaving SolarWinds! It was an epic ride and I'd do it all over again, any day. There are a select few leaders I had the incredible fortune of working for, who I hold on a pedestal (you know who you are), and colleagues and team members who are my work soulmates (you also know who you are!) I get to take that with me wherever I go - I met and worked with the best people. I feel incredibly lucky for both a great career, and an enviable network. I'm currently enjoying time as #1 mom (it's really the school lunch visits that tip the scales) and have officially come out of culinary retirement. If I can be of help to anyone with resumes, introductions, or charitable work, please reach out... now is a good time as I've got the free time for it.

Why would a true A-player decide to work with a founder? I can only think of 5 reasons 1. They don’t know they’re an A-player 2. You significantly overpay them on cash comp (you probably shouldn’t) 3. They believe in you as a founder (they probably shouldn’t unless you’ve actually demonstrated exceptional skill at something hugely useful in startup land) 4. They believe in the company (they probably shouldn’t at early stage) 5. They are addicted to solving the problem (there’s likely a lot of sheer dumb luck in this one) Could be a mix to a certain extent As the age of AI dawns, I believe the gap in output of an A-minus player and an A-player is similar to the gap between an A-player and a C player 5 years ago. The leverage is crazy and it cuts both ways. Late stage likely increasing plays reason 2 Early stage likely has to play 1, 3 and 5. This will further increase the gap between first time founders and second + time founders who’ve already had a win. 3 should be pretty rare on first time founders. Interesting times P.S. Almost added 6 - truly satisfying work and work environment. But I’m not 100% convinced this can be sufficient on its own. It probably should be. Hapiness at work is deeply underrated. #ai #team #shipsandshipping
