Many workplaces glorify packed calendars, back-to-back meetings, and eating lunch at our desks, but the irony is, the harder we try to force good ideas, the less likely they are to show up. Science says your best thinking probably isn’t happening while staring at a spreadsheet or your inbox. Researchers have found that creativity and problem-solving improve during moments when the brain is technically “off task,” like walking, showering, daydreaming, or simply taking some space. This even has a name: "the shower effect." Unstructured time matters more than we think. Lightbulb moments tend to happen during low-effort activities because your brain finally has space to wander. When you’re doing something simple, like showering, your mind shifts into what scientists call the default mode network. It’s a state where you’re not actively problem-solving, but your brain is still connecting the dots in the background. When you’re sitting at your desk, you’re often in “task mode,” focused, efficient, and narrow. You’re executing instead of exploring. When you step away, your brain relaxes, allowing ideas from different parts of your mind to collide in new ways. So those random breakthrough moments halfway through unloading the dishwasher aren’t actually random. They happen when you finally give your brain space to think differently. Which is a good reminder that rest isn’t lazy, and stepping away isn’t falling behind. Your best ideas come from stepping away long enough to let them find you. Manuscript Studies: A Journal of the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies, 9(2), 185-221. https://lnkd.in/g2TUr7UW Abstract This article theorizes the capture of 3D data for manuscripts. To begin, it provides a much-needed definition of digitization: a scholarly intervention that captures aspects of a manuscript's materiality in digital form. Essential to this definition is scholarly intervention, without which digitization is often viewed as an act outside scholarship, disconnected from the research questions that should guide it. To support this definition, the essay examines three new digital technologies: multispectral imaging, DNA analysis, and image manipulation. What becomes immediately central to the essay is that such scholarly interventions regularly rely on collaborations with scientists. Once digitization is established as a scholarly intervention, the essay lays the theoretical groundwork for 3D capture as a new means for scholars to intervene. The article draws upon D. F. McKenzie's notion of a book as "an expressive form" and Jerome McGann's notion of a book as an "event" to theorize a manuscript as a performance, that is, as presenting and provoking experience. Through this theorizing, the article argues that 3D capture is needed to explore how a manuscript presents and provokes experience, examining well-known cultural acts performed by manuscripts, such as receiving a kiss and welcoming a hand for swearing an oath. Finally, the article discusses a recent approach to 3D capture carried out by the author, providing a link to downloadable 3D models and a VR or AR experience of the St Chad Gospels. But sometimes, that little bee is simply asleep. 🥹 After spending hours collecting nectar and pollen, some bees crawl into flowers as the sun goes down, curl up among the petals, and rest until morning. For them, a flower can become a tiny natural bedroom. Honey bees usually sleep inside their hive, resting on the honeycomb. They don’t have eyelids, so they can’t close their eyes. Instead, their antennae become still, their muscles relax, and they can even lose their balance and tip sideways. 🐝💤 Many solitary bees and male bees, however, are known to sleep outdoors, sometimes tucked inside flowers. Some have even been photographed sharing the same blossom, squeezing together as the evening gets colder. 🌸 And this sleep isn’t just cute. It’s important. Foraging bees need proper rest to maintain their memory and remember where the best flowers are. They even communicate those locations to other bees through the famous waggle dance. So the next time you see a bee completely still inside a flower… Don’t disturb it. It might just be sleeping. 🌼🐝💤 #Bees #Nature #Wildlife #DidYouKnow #fblifestyle
