Very informative Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund Summit last week. I focused my time on sessions related to data center growth since this is a priority area for Buoyant Ventures where Laura Katzman (Dyer) has been leading our research. Grateful to the CIF team for convening such a unique group of investors, startups, hyperscalers, data center operators and other partners. My takeaways: • Everyone is focused on building new data centers as fast as possible. Everyone acknowledges the trade-offs between speed, reliability, cost and sustainability, but it's still not clear where the compromise will come from • Making the most of the power we already have seems like the only tangible short-term lever. Several speakers pointed to VPPs as what can actually move the needle in the next 12 months. Buoyant is also looking at flexibility solutions behind-the-meter • Communities where data centers are sited often see them as the villain. There’s real potential for shared benefits, but only if local stakeholders are genuinely included early and often • There’s no doubt that hunger for data center growth has made sustainability goals harder to meet (“the moon moved further”). But the potential to help scale clean energy is there, demonstrated by Microsoft itself, which last year added 19GW of clean power for a total of 34GW Thank you Brandon Middaugh, Erika Basham, James Lockyer and Taylor Brugh!
