Dr. David Lenihan shared thisMy visit to CES 2026 in Las Vegas was fantastic. While at the show (which attracted almost 150K global attendees), I noticed that several U.S. locales had elaborate booths touting substantial business perks for newly funded startups, along with the robust entrepreneurial activity they attracted. On my flight back home, I had a lingering question about the aggressive and very persuasive regional promotion at CES from Ohio, Florida, Michigan, and more that I couldn’t solve: With all the incredible benefits they have to offer to startups, where the heck were St. Louis and Missouri??? In this article, I ponder the question and offer solutions.St. Louis’ and Missouri’s Absence at CES 2026: A Massive Missed OpportunitySt. Louis’ and Missouri’s Absence at CES 2026: A Massive Missed OpportunityDr. David Lenihan

Dr. David Lenihan shared thisForbes Business Council members and I discuss how leaders can identify early signals of internal tumult before financial consequences occur. I recommended that executives be on the lookout of key team members heading for the exits. This kind of exodus should be read as a loud and unmistakable alarm that harmful/toxic disruption is spreading. It needs to be addressed quickly and effectively to avoid expensive, irreparable damage to your organization. #businessdysfunction #negativedisruption #financialconsequences https://lnkd.in/eCDC6EuaFinancial Disruption: 20 Early Warning Signals To Watch ForFinancial Disruption: 20 Early Warning Signals To Watch For

Dr. David Lenihan shared thisBig thanks to Alexander Kafka, Senior Editor at The Chronicle of Higher Education, for including my quotes on the changing landscape of medical research funding. I shared my perspectives about our work at Ponce Research Institute at Ponce Health Sciences University (Ponce, Puerto Rico). The strides we've made at PRI in understanding and studying cancer, endometriosis, AIDS, chikungunya, and Zika are significant, and I appreciate Alexander's help in highlighting our achievements in his comprehensive report "The High Stakes Hunt for Research Funds".

Dr. David Lenihan shared thisIn her valuable article "Nursing Is the Surefire New Path to American Prosperity", WSJ writer Jeanne Whalen examines the burgeoning demand and vast career opportunities for nurses in the U.S. Nursing offers a structured path for aspiring healthcare professionals from all economic backgrounds, especially those who come from economically disadvantaged areas of the country. Its hands-on approach to empathetic care makes it A.I.-proof, and the barriers to entry to begin one's professional journey are low and affordable. Not only can aspiring nurses start their education at reasonably priced community colleges, they also have the option to pursue "earn-while-you-learn" or employer-sponsored nursing paths via Nurse Corps, the HRSA Scholarship Program, and a variety of regional hospital/employer scholarships - with some hospital systems providing tuition reimbursement or upfront payment in exchange for a contract to work as a registered nurse (RN) for a set period. All of these choices make nursing a low-debt or even debt-free healthcare career with plenty of room for growth and new opportunities. Options for advancement include earning a graduate degree as a Nurse Practitioner (trained to diagnose/treat illnesses, order tests, and prescribe medication) and even becoming a doctor. In fact, in my experience at Ponce Health Sciences University, I've found some of the best doctors were originally highly talented nurses. https://lnkd.in/eGhNuAWzNursing Is the Surefire New Path to American ProsperityNursing Is the Surefire New Path to American Prosperity

Dr. David Lenihan shared thisIn the WSJ article "Finding The Best Place to Work: A Look at Careers at More Than 1,700 Companies", authors Theo Francis and Andrew Mollica examine a new analysis that identifies the workplaces providing the best earnings potential and professional growth. Companies mentioned in the "Where You Work Matters List", a study by the Burning Glass Institute and Schultz Family Foundation, include General Motors, the Mayo Clinic, Fidelity Investments, DocuSign, and Procter & Gamble. These organizations may be regarded by the study as the "best", but they're also very large, and it's easy for workers' skill sets to get lost in them. If you truly want to advance your career, take a breath and hold off on seeking employment at these behemoth firms. Instead, consider bringing your talents to a smaller company. Your achievements and contributions will be more easily recognized - and your on-the-job accomplishments won't be overlooked. Once you've generated data-based, viable value while working for a smaller company and have clearly demonstrated your worth, then examine whether you've reached your cap. If the kind of advancement that you seek isn't possible and you've gotten as high on the ladder as you can go, explore making a move elsewhere. The accumulation of proven solutions that you made possible during your tenure will increase your economic value, and you can confidently explore what's possible at another, and possibly much larger, firm. Taking this path will not only increase your compensation package, it will also ensure that you'll walk in the door with attributes that are respected and appreciated. https://lnkd.in/gzYhtcriFinding the Best Place to Work: A Look at Careers at More Than 1,700 CompaniesFinding the Best Place to Work: A Look at Careers at More Than 1,700 Companies

Dr. David Lenihan shared thisThe Credible.com article “Average Medical School Debt: What Do Doctors Owe?” gives an overview about what you need to know about the ins and outs of financing medical education. I offered some insights into how to pace loan payments during residencies, and pointed out that medicine and dentistry are more secure forms of debt owing to the structured nature of residency and strong earning potential after training. And finally, new doctors should keep your eye on helping people; loan repayments and earnings will take care of themselves. Dr. David Lenihan shared thisProposed by State Rep. Brad Christ, House Bill 3231 – the Missouri Innovation, Public Safety, and Accountability Act – represents a serious and timely effort to modernize Missouri’s approach to economic development through the creation of innovation districts. Its current structure splits credits evenly between projects above and below 750,000 square feet. Missouri should consider weighting incentives more heavily toward smaller projects, where innovation density is highest and barriers to entry are lowest. If the state focuses on people first, entrepreneurs early, transparency always, and speed throughout, innovation districts can do more than redevelop buildings. They can help Missouri grow its population, strengthen its tax base and build a robust economy that lasts. Thanks to Erik Siemers for sharing my POV on this important bill. #MissouriBusiness #MissouriBusinessResources #economicdevelopment #InnovationDistricts #entrepreneurs https://lnkd.in/eqDBtv4BSLBJ - Innovation district pitch is strong but lawmakers should emphasize smaller.pdfSLBJ - Innovation district pitch is strong but lawmakers should emphasize smaller.pdf

Dr. David Lenihan shared thisIn early January, I attended the CES 2026 show in Las Vegas. CES (Consumer Electronics Show). It was fantastic! But I was very disappointed to note Puerto Rico’s absence as an exhibitor. It’s not that there aren’t generous and tangible advantages that would make any of the thousands of business builders in attendance at CES consider setting up shop here. Puerto Rico offers a variety of incentives across many industries as well as a thriving bilingual ecosystem. With so much to offer startup entrepreneurs in a wide range of sectors, Puerto Rico needs to make sure they have a booth at CES 2027. They also need to execute a targeted and relentless data- and benefit-driven multimedia crusade and not rely on startup entrepreneurs bumping into their information (i.e. “build it and they will come” Field of Dreams syndrome). Dr. David Lenihan liked thisDr. David Lenihan liked thisMost health system mergers are built on the same promise: better quality, better experience, and lower cost. Too often, they fall short. In a new article in NEJM Catalyst, my colleagues and I share what we’re learning at Michigan Medicine as we work to build a coordinated, statewide system of care following our integration with University of Michigan Health-Sparrow and University of Michigan Health-West. Our goal was straightforward but not simple: deliver high-quality, patient-centered, cost-effective care closer to home while improving performance across the system. What’s becoming clear is that success doesn’t come from the transaction; it comes from the integration. Over the past two years, we’ve focused on three areas: - Business integration to support operational consistency and financial sustainability - Clinical integration to expand access and improve outcomes - Cultural integration to build trust, alignment, and shared purpose While our work is ongoing, we’re beginning to see measurable progress: - Expanded access to more complex, academic-caliber care in local communities - Meaningful gains in clinical quality - Reduced nurse turnover and improved employee experience - A significant financial turnaround across our regional hospitals Just as important, we’ve seen what it takes to make this kind of transformation possible: clear goals, accountable leadership, consistent communication, sustained teamwork, and a willingness to adapt when things don’t go as planned. I also want to express my gratitude to Scott Flanders, MD and Margaret Dimond, PhD for their leadership and partnership as co-authors on this article, and to all of our team members at Michigan Medicine for their efforts, expertise and commitment that has made this progress possible. This isn’t a finished story. Integration at this scale is complex, and it takes time. But our experience suggests that with a disciplined approach, health systems can begin to deliver on the promise that so often accompanies consolidation and create real value for the patients and communities we are privileged to serve. How do real leadership lessons learned at the frontline translate to decisions made at the strategy table — and how do future leaders prepare for that transition? One of the goals of the Howard University Master of Health Administration Leadership Series — Episode One, "From Bedside to Boardroom: Building the Next Generation of Healthcare Leaders", is to create space for conversations that bridge clinical experience with operational and strategic leadership. I am proud to highlight Letitia Chester, who will serve as Co-Moderator for this discussion and represents the very leadership journey this series is designed to explore. Letitia brings nearly two decades of healthcare experience across primary care and specialty practice environments, with a professional background spanning frontline clinical work, practice management, and population health. Beginning her career as a Medical Assistant, she advanced into leadership roles where she developed a deep understanding of the operational and clinical realities facing providers and care teams today. Her experience supporting providers within an ACO and a major health system in Delaware has shaped her perspective on how collaboration, data, and engagement drive meaningful outcomes. Most recently, Letitia joined Humana as a Provider Engagement Executive, partnering with provider groups and leadership teams to support financial performance, quality outcomes, and patient experience. As a current Master of Health Administration student at Howard University, she embodies the mission of the MHA program — preparing leaders who understand both the realities of care delivery and the strategic decisions that shape healthcare systems. Her passion for improving care delivery through collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and provider engagement makes her an outstanding voice in this conversation about leadership development and the future of healthcare leadership. 🎉 Proud to Share a New Publication in AONL Voice 🎉 "Innovation Without Walls: Transforming Rural Nursing Education Through Partnership" January 1st, 2026. We’re excited to announce the publication of a new article in Voice, the official publication of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), highlighting the impact of innovative Academic–Practice Partnerships (APPs) in addressing nursing workforce challenges. Developed in collaboration with Shevonne Scott and Jeffery Hudson-Covolo, DNP, R.N., NEA-BC, FACHE, the article describes the design, implementation, and evaluation of a prelicensure BSN “School-in-a-Box” (SIB) model guided by the AACN Guiding Principles for Academic–Practice Partnerships (2019). This model was launched through a partnership between Unitek Learning and Sierra View Medical Center (SVMC) in Porterville, California, and is built on shared investment, shared governance, and shared outcomes. The article was distributed to over 12,000 nurse leaders worldwide, elevating the conversation around scalable, practice-ready nursing education—particularly in rural and medically underserved communities. We’re proud to contribute to national and global dialogue on how academic and clinical partners can co-create sustainable solutions for the future nursing workforce. 👏 Grateful to all collaborators who made this work possible. Capped Potential: How Federal Indirect Cost Rate Limits Could Disrupt University Tech Transfer and Stifle American Innovation TTOs may soon face significant financial disruption and a decreased capacity to bring new innovations and technologies to the marketplace. Research conducted at universities plays a pivotal role in the United States’ global leadership by driving scientific discovery, fueling innovation, and translating breakthroughs into technologies that improve our lives. Through a dynamic ecosystem of public investment and intellectual capital, and a robust technology transfer infrastructure, federally funded research produces breakthrough discoveries that not only advance science but also transform into real-world technologies that impact nearly every sector of society. At the core of this system are technology transfer offices (TTOs), which serve as the crucial conduit between university laboratories and the marketplace. TTOs ensure that innovations born from academic research are evaluated, protected, and licensed, thereby enabling start-ups to launch, industry collaborations to form, and new products to reach the public. Despite its success, this high-functioning ecosystem is facing a potentially catastrophic threat. Since February, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Department of Defense (DOD) have all announced a 15 percent cap on research indirect cost reimbursement rates. Honored to return as a speaker for the Early Career Faculty Boot Camp, a collaborative effort by Rush, Rosalind Franklin, and the SIU School of Medicine. With 40 early-career faculty from across the country, we focused on a core leadership skill: navigating difficult conversations with clarity, curiosity, and care. 🔑 Key takeaways from the presentation: Active listening is the foundation. Figuring out the type of conversation the other person is having (social, emotional, or problem-solving) is not possible without active listening. - Honor their emotions and perspectives—don’t rush to fix or solve (I have to tame this tendency for myself). - Be curious—what clarity do we need before engaging? Change "I know" to "I wonder" to be more open-minded about the situation - Align values and goals, especially when conversations feel high-stakes. - Leverage generative AI to gain insight, plan, and reflect before stepping in. Huge shoutout to Dr. Nick Weshinsky for his thoughtful insights on working with medical students and adding depth to our discussion on conversation types. Grateful to be invited back for the 4th year—these conversations shape the future of leadership in academic medicine. Thank you, Amarjit Virdi, Nutan Vaidya, Boyung, and Stacy for planning another successful boot camp this year. #LeadershipDevelopment #DifficultConversations #MedicalEducation #FacultyDevelopment #AIforLeaders #AcademicMedicine #ProfessionalGrowth

https://lnkd.in/guBFaDVF Authorized by statutes like the Economy Act, interagency agreements (IAAs) have long served as written agreements that allow two or more agencies to share goods, services or staff and prevent duplicate efforts. Over the years, their use has become standard practice, so much so that there are government forms used to facilitate them.

💡 Meeting the Moment: Our Commitment to Real-Time Learning At UIC School of Public Health, the community health science division is committed to teaching our students to be responsive and effective public health leaders who can engage with real-world issues as they unfold. One way that we do this is by remaining flexible and adapting our curriculum to address immediate, relevant societal challenges—even when it means stepping outside the original syllabus! For example, when U.S. Immigrant and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arrived in Little Village, we cancel a planned class walking visit to Little Village, and we immediately adapted. Instead, we hosted a Community Dinner to directly engage local public health practitioners, support local Little Village Businesses, and bring together academics, community organizers, students and residents to dream and ideate for a more just public health system. This adaptation allowed our students to meet the moment by collaborating with our larger Public Health community and discussing real-time challenges. This is important for health justice because true impact requires being able to integrate classroom knowledge with the real-time needs of communities. We are preparing our students not just for the exam, but for the unexpected reality of public health practice. Have a look at an example of our students and faculty stepping up to do just that! 👇

How can colleges transition from simply enrolling to truly serving Black students? Find out in our latest episode featuring Dr. Keith Curry. Listen to Dr. Keith Curry’s Freedom Dream: Becoming Black Serving Institutions at: https://lnkd.in/guwjQQA9 Apple Podcast: https://lnkd.in/gPUMXQdj Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gb9pd9H3 Episode Description: In this episode we talk about all things Black Serving Institution (BSI), a new designation in California that creates a pathway for public and private colleges and universities to commit resources to advance the success of Black students. The designation requires campuses to demonstrate programs dedicated to Black student success, such as African-American studies and affinity spaces, as well as a track record of strong Black retention, transfer, and graduation rates. Dr. Keith Curry, president of Compton College, joins the conversation and tells us about how his freedom dream to create a BSI designation became reality. We discuss the ways BSIs can embrace servingness, the importance of upfront accountability and strategic planning compared to federal enrollment-based designations, and strategies for truly serving Black students rather than just enrolling them. We also highlight Compton College’s comprehensive approach to supporting all students' basic needs, including a housing project underway, another freedom dream becoming a reality for Dr. Curry. In this “riff” (as Dr. Curry uses) we talk about cross-racial collaboration and solidarity, as well as building relationships with external partners like donors, legislators, and the community to advance Black student success. 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗚𝗶𝗴 - 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 Your team works for a consulting firm that analyzes the performance of large public programs. Medicare is one of the largest public expenditures in the United States, with annual spending exceeding $900 billion. Extensive datasets on spending, utilization, providers, and outcomes are now publicly available. A policy group has asked your team to evaluate how Medicare spending varies across regions and whether higher spending is associated with improved outcomes. Your consulting team has been asked to address the following question: Why does Medicare spending per beneficiary vary across regions, and what factors appear to explain those differences? Because these datasets are publicly available, the client is particularly interested in how open data can be used to evaluate the performance of large public investments. Examples of publicly available Medicare datasets can be found here: https://data.cms.gov The goal is to explore how engineering style analysis of publicly available data can help decision makers better understand system performance and identify opportunities for improvement. 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 Prepare a consulting briefing consisting of a one page executive summary suitable for discussion with decision makers. Supporting analysis, calculations, data sources, and figures may be included as backup. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 The analysis should include: • Assessment of variation in Medicare spending across regions • Comparison of spending with selected outcome indicators • Key assumptions and uncertainties affecting the analysis • Identification of potential factors influencing variation in spending • A map of publicly available data sources supporting the analysis • Recommendations for additional analysis that could help policymakers better evaluate program performance

Northwell SHELTER Team 💡 Social determinants of health account for 80% of health outcomes. Yet most healthcare systems weren't designed to address them. ➡️ This is Project SHELTER, a team from our #ClinicalScholars program who transformed how one of America's largest health systems by ensuring everyone has an opportunity to be healthy. The Challenge: Northwell Health—NY's largest healthcare system serving 10+ million people. Patients were treated for medical conditions while housing insecurity, food insecurity, and other social needs went unaddressed. Clinicians lacked training to screen for and navigate these issues. The Vision: What if we could leverage a major health system's resources to address social determinants upstream—in partnership with communities? The Leadership: Led by @JohannaMartinez, @ChristineChim, Shari Jardine, MPH, MA, Sonia Jacome, Kerlann Flowers, Stephanie Kubow, MPH, Jack Tocco, Omolara Thomas, and Zenobia Brown MD, MPH, this team demonstrated systems-level leadership: • Started with housing, expanded to all social needs • Built infrastructure—universal SDoH screening and navigation • Trained thousands of providers in health equity • Created partnerships—medical-legal, food as health programs • Invested in pipeline—Community Scholars for diverse future workforce The Impact: ✨ Universal SDoH screening across pediatrics and internal medicine ✨ 30% patient engagement with navigation services ✨ Medical-legal partnership established ✨ Food as Health programs launched ✨ System-wide health equity training ✨ Community Scholars expanding to new districts for 10 years What Makes This Replicable: Programs were designed with communities through focus groups and interviews, not for them. They built sustainable infrastructure addressing workforce training, clinical practice, and community partnerships simultaneously. My Reflection: What started as housing became a movement. This team proved large health systems can be engines for equity when they look beyond clinic walls and address root causes. They didn't just treat illness—they built health. Indiana University Launch… • 5K followers
Today marks a defining moment for Indiana University, one we will look back on as a true inflection point. The IU Board of Trustees has approved the launch of IU Inc., a separate nonprofit corporation purpose-built to accelerate IU’s 2030 Strategic Plan and operate at the speed, scale, and focus demanded by today’s innovation economy. IU Inc. creates a single, executive-level entry point into IU’s $1B research enterprise, aligning our talent, assets, applied and classified research capabilities, and interdisciplinary expertise into a streamlined, industry-facing platform. This structure positions IU not simply as a research engine, but as a deployment partner by converting discovery into implementation, commercialization, and measurable economic impact. Indiana University is building the infrastructure to translate excellence into outcomes for partners, for researchers, for students, and for the state of Indiana.
