Most leaders build credibility through correction. What they push back on. What they demand more of. But I keep watching strong leaders lose their best people for the opposite reason. They are fluent in criticism. And silent with recognition. Neuroscience is direct on this. The brain treats unacknowledged effort as effort that did not matter. Dopamine does not fire on good intentions. It fires on signal. Repetition without reinforcement weakens the very behavior you wanted more of. And the environment makes it worse. Criticism is loud. Public. Permanent. Appreciation, when it happens at all, is rushed or silent. So people stop guessing and start drifting. They share fewer early ideas. They polish before they speak. They leave emotionally long before they leave the company. The leaders who keep their best people are not the ones with the sharpest critique. They are the ones who say the thing in the moment. The intern's question saved the meeting. Tell them. The analyst carried the week. Tell them. The teammate you trust without thinking. Tell them. Silence is not neutral. Judy Willis Smith reacted on thisJudy Willis Smith reacted on thisHope starts with world class rehabilitation and as we continue our forever mission to provide that care we celebrated the ribbon-cutting and open house for our newest acquired brain injury unit (ABI-6). Located on the sixth floor of the Marcus-Woodruff Building, this unit further expands the Rollins Acquired Brain Injury Program, enabling us to serve even more people and families living with brain injuries. Opening in phases, ABI-6 represents years of planning and collaboration across clinical and operational teams. From designing patient and family-centered spaces and securing equipment to hiring staff and testing workflows, team members across the organization worked together to ensure patients receive the same high-quality rehabilitation experience Shepherd is known for. This week marked the opening of 18 beds, but eventually, ABI-6 will serve 35 patients and families, bringing Shepherd’s total capacity to care for patients with brain injuries to 85 beds. "It's amazing to be at Shepherd [and celebrate] all that we've been able to accomplish — to be able to have 35 more beds for ABI. Having the quality be consistent across all three units is really important to us, and I've had a great team of people who helped get this accomplished. It's super exciting,” said Katie Metzger, OTR, MBA, director of Rollins Acquired Brain Injury Program. "There's a lot of hope in what we do at Shepherd Center, and hope is certainly here on the sixth floor. We are so proud of the expanded access to allow patients with brain injuries to be well cared for," said Jamie Shepherd, MBA, MHA, FACHE, president and CEO of Shepherd Center.
