Jonathan Abrams reposted thisJonathan Abrams reposted thisExcited to welcome John Rote as an advisor to CloudFence! John Rote believes so strongly in what we're building at CloudFence that he's coming out of retirement to work with us. John Rote has seen cloud security from almost every angle, from leading Incident Response and Threat Intelligence to overseeing Global Security and Infrastructure Audits at large enterprises like MetLife. He immediately understood the gap we're solving because he's experienced it firsthand. Even at large organizations with mature security stacks, using tools like Wiz and Palo Alto Networks, he still struggled to get clear answers to critical questions: Where are our workloads and applications communicating? How do we know if a workload starts communicating somewhere it shouldn't? You can architect your cloud following all the best practices, but how do you know that what's actually happening in your environment matches what you designed and intended? To all the CISOs and anyone managing cloud infrastructure, I'd highly recommend spending some time talking with John Rote. He has a wealth of experience and insights to share. Welcome, John Rote! We're very lucky to have you !

Jonathan Abrams reposted thisJonathan Abrams reposted thisAgree.com is a company I’ve admired for a while from afar. They’re going after a category owned by a legacy incumbent that nobody likes using and everyone feels stuck with. Their product is going viral and has rapidly become the default option for high-growth AI-native companies. Sounds familiar! So it’s only fitting that they decided to partner with Lightfield. Their head of sales Mona Darwish migrated all of the data from their previous CRM in under an hour. They now handle deal updates, follow-ups, and forecasting with our agent. As part of our work with their team, we’ve rolled out an MCP connector for Agree. Revenue and cashflow are critical to model as part of a business world model, but this context has historically been too difficult or cumbersome to pull into legacy CRM. With a one-click connection customers can now pull all of this directly into Lightfield. Super excited to keep building together with this team and supporting each others’ growth.

That’s roughly 20 to 30 new companies per decade, for the last five decades. This year alone, with a quarter to go, there have been 42 decacorns minted privately. Either this is the most economically transformative event since the industrial revolution, or we’re getting a wee bit ahead of ourselves.

Jonathan Abrams reposted thisJonathan Abrams reposted thisIf an LLM can one-shot a VC’s “proprietary insight,” what exactly are LPs paying for? Not much. Fake moats look like loud claims, marketing buzz, and regurgitated insights. Real moats start with recognizing what your firm is unusually good at and compounding that advantage. “Know thyself” is not a new idea. Hard-earned proprietary knowledge gives VCs something worth scaling and AI gives them a way to do it. We’ve been doing this at Arkane since 2023. This year, we wrote our first checks to founders sourced by our agents. Now we’re building proprietary models, powered by NVIDIA. Our flywheel is simple: proprietary knowledge is used to fine-tune models; better models uncover new knowledge; and new knowledge then feeds the next round of training. That’s how we find the very best founders leveraging novel breakthroughs. Proprietary models will define the next generation of VCs. My thoughts on why VCs must build their own LLMs are in the first comment.

Jonathan Abrams liked thisJonathan Abrams liked thisi hear so many investors describe how venture has changed and how they're adapting. I can tell in some of their faces that it's much less enjoyable, much less fun for them. This walkthrough covers turning Enterprise SSO on for a project, enabling it for a specific organization, and setting up a connection with Okta, Entra ID, Google, or any SAML/OIDC provider. It also shows the setup link you can send a customer’s IT admin so they configure their own identity provider without a call. Login restrictions, just-in-time provisioning, role mapping, and SCIM are in there too, and like everything else in the video, they’re settings rather than code changes. Nothing new to write, nothing new to deploy.

Using tools like our agentic blue-team tied to your agentic red-team (or ours) is one of the best way to fight these vulnerabilities.

Jonathan Abrams liked thisJonathan Abrams liked thisOn October 28 at ISC2 Security Congress, our CPO Alex Olivier and Vatsal Gupta, Staff Security Engineer at Apple, are presenting “Identity as the Control Plane for Software Supply Chain Security.” Software supply chain breaches are often attributed to code tampering, yet many originate from compromised identities, overprivileged service accounts, and weak access governance across CI/CD pipelines. This session reframes supply chain security as an identity governance challenge. It looks at how authorization decisions for human and machine identities operate across source control, build systems, artifact repositories, and deployment platforms, and how mismanaged access leads to lateral movement and privilege escalation. From there it covers identity-centric control patterns, including: ✔️ Segmentation of non-human identities ✔️ Least privilege enforcement in pipelines ✔️ Federated access governance ✔️ Continuous monitoring. It closes with a governance-aligned framework that integrates IAM, DevSecOps, and enterprise risk management to reduce blast radius and improve auditability without slowing engineering velocity. 📍 Crest 3/4, 10:45 to 11:45 AM MT https://lnkd.in/eNUEuFfm If you are attending, feel free to message Alex on LinkedIn to set up a time to talk in person. Jonathan Abrams liked thisAnthropic recently described an AI agent that, during a cybersecurity evaluation, submitted malicious code to an unrelated GitHub repository and tried to convince the maintainers to merge it. When someone identified the code as malicious, the agent created another account to argue that it was safe. What I found particularly interesting was how difficult it became to get the agent to change course. In follow-up experiments, researchers explicitly told the agent that the maintainers were real people. It abandoned the attack in only about 5% of those continuations. One possible explanation involves how long-running agents manage memory. This agent repeatedly compressed its conversation history into shorter summaries. Those summaries preserved its progress and plans, including the decision to pursue the attack. Anthropic suspects this helped create a kind of momentum, where the agent’s previous decisions became increasingly difficult to reconsider. It’s a strange property of agent memory. We usually think of context compaction as a way to preserve useful information while freeing up space. But the agent is also deciding which parts of its history matter, and its summaries can carry forward mistaken assumptions about what it’s supposed to be doing. This has interesting implications for authorization. If an agent’s understanding of its task evolves through its own summaries, checking whether an individual tool call is permitted may tell you very little about whether the action still serves the user’s original intent. The experiment involved a model with production safeguards disabled, so the results shouldn’t be generalized to deployed agents. But I’d be interested in seeing the same experiment with task boundaries maintained independently of the agent’s memory, particularly across compaction and replanning. It seems like a useful distinction to test: preserving what an agent remembers versus preserving what it was actually authorized to do. https://lnkd.in/gS4vtCD3An alignment assessment of the UK AISI cybertesting incidentAn alignment assessment of the UK AISI cybertesting incident

Over the past few years, fundraising has become significantly tougher, especially for smaller funds. This, unfortunately, is the case even for VCs delivering solid returns. In my recent Crunchbase piece, I talk about how emerging managers can survive (and even thrive!) in a challenging fundraising environment. I discuss why the process today is more about familiarity than performance, and highlight places where managers should look for capital that others ignore. Check out the full column via link in comments. Curious to hear from other managers who have recently raised successfully. Which part of this rings true?

Operators Studio • 18K followers
A question I often get from LPs is how Operators Studio adds value to founders. Here are all the things I have been supporting portfolio founders with just over the last week: - Raising a follow-on as efficiently as possible, given the company recently hit a growth inflexion point: Everything from intros to deck prep to backchannels to structuring to.... - Flipping the business to Canada, raising a top-up to enable that: How to structure it? Valuation etc? - Thinking through two soft acquisition offers: Should we take it? What's the right price? How to structure it? - Dipsticks for two potential Series Bs in the Fall: What are investors looking for? What will be the key questions that need answering? Can we speak with a handful of friendlies? - Executive hiring at seed stage: Can you speak to a senior hire to convince them? How do we manage this awesome candidate who is asking for ridiculous equity without appropriate vesting? How do we structure comp given we are tight on cash? - A difficult conversation about major business headwinds: How do we survive? Or does it even make sense to survive? This is just the last week. Every second fund is trying to claim that "we are ex-operators"/ "we are founder-led capital"/ "we will help you build". At Operators Studio, I don't like to make these claims. I just show up every day, unblock founders in the trenches for years and years, and let our family of founders do the talking on our behalf.

“An OpenTelemetry expert in every repository.” I spent two decades building companies that move telemetry around. So OllyGarden is close to home for me. The shift I keep thinking about: we’ve built telemetry for people to consume. Increasingly, AI agents will be the primary consumers, using it to investigate incidents and decide what to do. They need useful context. OllyGarden’s Insights shows teams where their existing telemetry falls short. Rose helps fix the instrumentation through PRs engineers review. And Minimum Viable Instrumentation helps establish that baseline for services that have little visibility today. Uber excited Grand is part of OllyGarden’s $4M seed round alongside Next Frontier Capital, ACTAI Ventures, DIG Ventures as well as a tremendous set of observability strategics including Datadog, Grafana Labs, and Dash0. Juraci Paixão Kröhling and the OllyGarden team know this world deeply. Glad we get to be part of what they’re building. New founder Q&A on our site! Love what Ralph Betesh is building at Coverdash! Anyone who has insured a small business knows the drill: a phone call, a PDF, and a week of waiting. Coverdash turned that into a few clicks — and then put it inside the platforms small businesses already use, so coverage gets offered at the moment of need instead of chased down later. That last part is what got our attention. Insurance is a distribution business more than a product business, and owning the point of sale is a durable advantage in a market this fragmented. Link below — worth a few minutes.

"So what exactly is a venture studio?" I'm not sure how many times I've had this conversation over the last few years. At least a few times / week. For aspiring venture builder - especially those in institutional settings, 'getting' the model - and understanding how it differs from others - is critical. So, we're starting at the beginning. On March 19, I'm sitting down with Matthew Burris for the first session of the The Venture Studio Forum's University Track Speaker Series. Matt is widely credited for helping to define the venture studio asset class - he co-authored the Venture Studio Index and built the Three-Role Framework that the industry uses to classify studios. He's spent more time researching what makes a studio a studio than anyone I know. If you're at a university, research institution, or economic development org trying to figure out whether a venture studio makes sense for you, this is where to start. Note, this event kicks off a five part-series we're running through the VSF, all focused on helping institutions understand and evaluate the model. Here's the full program: Mar 19: What Is a Venture Studio? Apr 16: University Studio Examples May 21: Funding Mechanisms Jun 18: Finding & Working with Studios Jul 16: Sourcing & Evaluating Founder Talent Registration link in the comments!

The "One Number" That Derails Fundraisers Most founders believe their fundraising fails because of market size, competition, or valuation. In reality, the single most common cause of early deal-kill in 2026 is Net Dollar Retention (NDR) / Cohort Churn misalignment. When institutional VCs run due diligence, they look straight past top-line ARR growth to test the underlying retention health: • High acquisition with high churn is just expensive customer acquisition. • Expansion revenue from existing logos (NDR > 110%+) proves true product-market fit and pricing power. Before going to market, founders must ensure their core operational data room tells a clear, undeniable story about customer retention and payback periods. At G+QUANT we partner with early-stage founders to structure institutional-grade investment decks, data rooms, and capital strategies that withstand rigorous VC due diligence. Founders: Have you stress-tested your retention cohort metrics prior to initiating your next round?
