Did some tinkering this weekend. Remember old unreal tessellation? Well I bought back similar functionality in the form of a patch component that moves with the player or camera. Using RVT height and making a procedural mesh with a uniform grid of verts that get less dense towards the edges. Its kind of like Local VHFM + cos it supports shadows. Obviously not nanite or VSM friendly but that's okay cos not all projects need them. 🙂

I am not a GenAI evangelist, but I am gaining access to technical development I could not have done on my own. I have taken coding classes, but the material doesn't stick. I didn't use it regularly enough in my previous roles.   I think locally running, advanced, and inexpensive LLM models are right around the corner. I encourage my fellow technical digital artists to find uses for this tech that can ease the laborious workflows we've been using for decades.   I personally don't think GenAI will elevate the aesthetics of digital art (VFX, simulation, and games), but it may ease our workload so we can explore more aesthetic innovation. This little machine may be the GenAI Cloud Service, killer > https://lnkd.in/eVU948Me

I apologize in advance, as I am going to be doing to do the same exact problem that I'm trying to pinpoint... I can see the irony 😩 but all you AI-evangelist, or linkedin-fluencers who want to talk about any daily topic for f**king engagement... please just shut it for A DAY talking about Bungie (or any other team affected on that particular day) and let those people's posts actually shine. I guarantee those people who are ACTUALLY affflected have 100x the talent you wish you ever had.

How do you light an exterior scene without losing its mood, depth, and readability? This Sunday at 5 PM UTC, Michael is joining us inside the CGF Community for a live workshop on Exterior Lighting in Unreal Engine 5. Michael has spent 18+ years working in AA, AAA, and startup studios. He’s shipped 20 games and held Senior and Lead Lighting roles across Unreal Engine, Unity, and proprietary engines. His credits include Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Path of Exile, Need for Speed, Mass Effect, and Dead Space. In this workshop, he’ll share how he approaches exterior lighting in production: making scenes feel right, keeping them readable, and making lighting choices that actually support the environment. Join the community through the link below and catch it live: https://lnkd.in/eik3VEDP

Hot on the heels of other announcements, my colleague and TSC chair, Jon Lanz made the newest releases for #MoonRay today. These releases have a new versioning scheme (e.g 2026.29.0 and 2026.29.1), and includes infrastructure changes to support the #MaterialX data types through MoonRay's shading system along with a new materialx_shaders repo with our work-in-progress Map shaders. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/giarEtc4

I've been playing around with Codex for new tech art tools for my own Unreal Engine work. In just a few hours, I was able to create a web-browser 3D smoke particle simulation tool that can bake out and export flipbooks as a PNG, with a ton of parameters for both the smoke and the export animation. Coolest of all is that you can cache the simulation locally and scrub through it! This is so empowering. It’s just a tool for myself to use with Unreal, but I thought I’d share it! #techart #3d #simulation #unreal #vfx

I’ve been working on a business restoration simulator in Unity, a game about restoring run-down local businesses and getting them ready to reopen. Think House Flipper, but for businesses. This clip shows an early vertical slice of the parking lot cleanup loop: bagging trash, clearing weeds, scraping old parking lines, sweeping up paint chips, sealing the asphalt, and repainting it clean. It’s still rough, but I have to say, it’s already pretty satisfying to play. Watching a neglected place slowly come back to life is surprisingly addictive. #GameDevelopment #IndieGameDev #SimulationGame #Unity3D #SoloDev

To all the pro #ai people on LinkedIn. I have a question for you. In the future, what criteria should companies be looking for when hiring senior candidates, when the junior roles that eventually build people into seniors is gone? Hint: There is no answer. Talent and experience go hand in hand.
