Jeff Barr reacted on thisJeff Barr reacted on this🚨Tomorrow, Thursday Oct 29, a group of us at AWS are answering questions on r/aws about building on AWS with the coding agent you already use: Claude Code, Codex, Kiro, Cursor or one you built yourself. Bring the hard questions: setup, keeping an agent safe in a real account, token costs, what's broken and what you want next. We're answering from 6:00 to 10:00 AM PT (9:00 AM to 1:00 PM ET, 13:00 to 17:00 UTC). The thread will be at the top of r/aws: https://lnkd.in/gUvjZxJm Jeff Barr Jonathan Vogel Alexis M. Jeff Barr shared thisIf you are getting ready to build agentic apps on AWS using Bedrock, AgentCore, and Strands, be sure to get your hands on a copy of this new book, "AI Agents on AWS." Written by my colleagues Mona Mona and Bunny Kaushik, the book takes you on a journey all the way from the start (defining Agents and Agentic AI), to production (security, reliability, scale, and cost mamagement), with plenty of worthwhile stops along the way including tooling, agent memory, architecture patterns, and agent communication. With plenty of diagrams and lots of code, this book doesn't just hand-wave, it gets down to the nittty-gritty that you need to know in order to be successful. Amazon link in first comment...

Jeff Barr shared thisEarlier this year we updated AWS WAF (Web Application Firewall) with the power to capture and provide visibility into web traffic coming from agents and AI bots. With agents representing 30-60% of total traffic, it is important to be able to show how this traffic creates sufficient business value to justify the infrastructure costs. You can do this using WAF's AI Traffic Analysis dashboard and you can now charge the AI bots for access to your content. Check the first comment for links to blog posts that will help you to learn more about the dashboard and the traffic monetization features.

Jeff Barr shared thisThe new AWS Lambda Web Functions make it super easy for you to build, deploy, and scale code that handles HTTP requests. As my colleague Janak Agarwal explains, a single warm environment serves many concurrent requests (up to 128 according to Micah Walter's blog post), so there are far fewer cold starts. Even cooler (and cost-effective-er), you pay for active CPU time and memory, but not for the time your code spends waiting on database or downstream service calls. You can easily deploy a function to multiple AWS Regions and count on latency-based routing to activate the most relevant one via a global endpoint. This all happens more or less automatically, as described in the blog post. This is all pretty amazing and you should think of it as a new serverless primitive to build your web apps, AI inference endpoints, microservices, webhooks, and so forth. Lots of links in the comments...

Jeff Barr shared thisEarlier this year I was thinking back to the 6502 processor that powered the first computer (an Ohio Scientific Challenger) that I was ever paid to program, was back in 1979. I decided that it was a good idea to own one and hopped over to Jameco Electronics to see what I could find. While I was there I noticed that the other 8-bit and 16-bit chips from my formative years were in short supply and added one of each to my cart. After they arrived I soldered some sockets to a perf board, 3D-printed a socket-like frame for the Xeo, and another frame for the perf board, both on my workhorse Prusa Research printer. I added some labels and now I have a nice little souvenir / reference card for some of the most consequential processor and memory chips from the early days of personal computing. The 2102 memory chips each held 1024 bits, so that's a whopping kilobyte of memory in the top right corner. Notably, these chips were used on the 4KB Processor Technology memory card in my Altair computer.

Jeff Barr shared thisWe recently added three new functions to the AWS Billing API. Each one gives you insight into details of particular Enterprise Support charges: 🏨 GetEnterpriseSupportContractDetails - Returns the rules behind the charges for a given month. 🏨 GetEnterpriseSupportChargeSummary - Returns a summary of Enterprise Support data aggregated across all accounts in the Enterprise Support profile. 🏨 ListEnterpriseSupportLinkedAccountCharges - Returns Support-eligible spend broken down at linked account level. My colleagues Alexandre Carlim and João Gabriel Carnevale created a solution around these APIs. The Support Breakdown Report generates a per-linked-account CSV of AWS Enterprise Support charges that can cover a single billing month or a look-back window of several months. Blog post and solution are linked in the comments.

Jeff Barr liked thisGratitude to both you and Microsoft, Rovy Branon for entrusting me with this timely pilot project. It's part of my own journey of exploration into AI that began in 2018 when I interviewed Brad Smith on-camera for his "Future Computed: Artificial Intelligence and its Role in Society" book. Since then, I've led a number of critical conversations on this topic at the University of Washington, even as I've experimented with the edges of the technology, and launched a documentary project this year into AI-powered synthetic personas. Yet, this statewide series of "listening sessions" leading to brand new curriculum and an innovative UW credential during this pivotal moment, is the most impactful work I can do right now for our community. I get to engage directly with non-profit and civic leaders on their deployment of AI and how to navigate that transformation with their workforce. We're starting to send out invites now for those sessions in Seattle, Bellingham, and Spokane over the next four weeks. If you think you'd like to join us, send me a direct message here.Jeff Barr liked thisAI is changing more than how we perform individual tasks. It is reshaping organizations, job demands and how people understand their professional identities. Earlier this year, the University of Washington and Microsoft expanded their longstanding partnership to include a shared commitment to helping Washington’s students, workers and communities navigate the challenges and opportunities of AI. Last week, that partnership reached another exciting milestone with the opening of the UW’s new home for the UW's Global Innovation Exchange on Microsoft’s Redmond campus. This important space will bring education, industry expertise and responsible technology leadership into closer connection. At UW Continuum College, we are advancing that same shared commitment through a new pilot program designed to help Washingtonians respond to AI-related workforce change with confidence and purpose. Made possible in part through a gift from Microsoft, the program will support nonprofit and civic leaders as they strengthen career resilience across their organizations. But before we build the course, we are listening. Over the coming months, Hanson Hosein and our Research & Innovation team will convene leaders in three regions across Washington to learn how AI and technological change are affecting their organizations, employees and communities and what guidance, resources and support they need. I’m grateful to Microsoft for investing in this work, to Hanson for leading this important listening and research effort and to the community leaders who will help us create a learning experience grounded in the real-world needs of Washington organizations and communities.

Jeff Barr liked thisJeff Barr liked thisI'm excited to share that I have joined the Science team at Amazon Robotics! My PhD was about teaching small teams of robots to work together, and I'm looking forward to finding out what happens when the team is about a million robots larger. At MIT, my research focused on perception and spatial representations for multi-agent systems, particularly how robots can build compact, meaningful, and robust models of the world that support localization, planning, and interaction. Much of that work was motivated by a simple question: what does it take for a map to be useful not just to one robot, but to many? Amazon is one of the few places where that question can be asked at a scale that no lab can replicate. Beyond algorithmic performance, it raises questions of robustness, scalability, and long-term reliability that are only beginning to be understood, and I can think of no better place to study what it takes for spatial AI to work in the real world. It is a privilege to join such an exceptional team, and I look forward to what's ahead!

Automatically Selecting Alert Modes Based on Location
Issued US 9,973,896
This patent relates to a system for selecting alert modes for mobile devices based upon location. For example, a phone may be automatically set to vibrate rather than to ring when in a movie theater or other location where minimum disruption is desired. Conversely, a phone may be set to ring at the highest volume when at a loud outdoors event. The system achieves this functionality by obtaining the current location of a device and determining a classification of the location based on mapping…
The system achieves this functionality by obtaining the current location of a device and determining a classification of the location based on mapping data stored by the system that identifies a feature of the location. In addition, this patent considers the velocity of the device in managing any changes to the alert modes. For example, if a user is merely driving by a location holding a loud outdoors event (i.e., the phone has a high velocity), the user’s phone would not change alert modes.

AWS Cloud Quest is getting a major refresh, and it is another signal that cloud learning is moving closer to real-world practice. The new AWS Cloud Quest brings together: • AI-powered customer conversations • Hands-on building in live AWS environments • Certification-aligned practice • Relaunchable completed labs for exam prep • Official AWS badges as proof of what learners can build What stands out is the learning model. Learners are not just watching videos or answering questions. They are practicing how to ask the right questions, understand customer needs, build solutions, and validate outcomes in AWS. That is the direction cloud skills validation is heading: more practical, more hands-on, and more connected to the work cloud professionals actually do. https://lnkd.in/g8vmUkPQ #AWS #AWSCloudQuest #AWSSkillBuilder #CloudComputing #CloudSkills #HandsOnLearning #AWSCertification

I've always been a fan of Goodreads, but this announcement is proof they understand what User Experience is in the pool of AI Slop: If you created an exclusive custom shelf named exactly "did not finish," "dnf," "abandoned," "unfinished," "didn-t-finish," or "dropped", we'll automatically convert it to the new default Did Not Finish shelf. Absolutely amazing. While I have different interpretation of what DNF means, I called my shelf "dropped", and the fact Goodreads figured out what to do with that is awesome, that's some great UX here. Thank you! Amazon Web Services (AWS) is rolling out two new AI-powered tools to make life easier for startups building on the cloud. The first, AWS Startup Advisor, acts like a built-in cloud guide that helps founders decide what services to use, how to control costs, and how to set up secure infrastructure based on what stage their startup is in. It’s designed for both technical and nontechnical founders. The second focuses on migration. Startups can now generate full cloud migration plans, including architecture maps and cost estimates, and even move workloads from other platforms like Google Cloud, Kubernetes environments, and major AI providers into AWS in a more automated way. Instead, they help teams work faster and achieve more. He shared a strong example: a team of six rebuilt a full codebase in 71 days, a project originally planned for 30 people over 18 months. This shows how powerful human + AI collaboration can be. Garman also noted that even with AI growth, companies still face tough decisions like workforce cuts. But the real message is clear: AI won’t replace human judgment, creativity, or strategic thinking.
