Glen Schofield posted thisSeeing the news about BioWare closing was very sad. Both as a developer and gameplayer, we’ve lost, yet again, one of those great, talented and passionate studios that produced games of quality, of wonder and adventure. They made big sweeping games with stories, fun mechanics and lasting memories. They made the kind of games people say they don’t want anymore. We’re being told graphics are overrated, stories aren’t needed, and being immersed in a game is old school. AAA is dead. Obviously good games are still hitting the market once in a while, but where are the ones everyone is waiting for? The big new blockbusters, the excitement of five great games coming out at once and you can’t decide what to buy. A holiday season of video game ads on billboards, TV, the internet, World Series and the Superbowl. When BioWare’s Baldur’s gate came out, it had amazing looking water, best in the industry. We played it as fans then studied it for quality as devs. Love that game. Then came Knights of the Old Republic, another great RPG, with a huge world (maybe not like today’s) that you could get lost in. Mass Effect created lasting fans and another vast story and world. I met Ray and Greg many times while at EA and loved talking about game making with them. They were so passionate and excited about what they were working on. Unfortunately we’ve watched the decline of many great studios and the retirement of countless fantastic, experienced developers. BioWare is a just another name on the pile of discarded studios, but it’s a sad moment for me. BioWare was once the best of the best. A studio that pushed for greatness, not for themselves, but for their fans. Rest in peace BioWare, you had a long, glorious run. And, thank you.

Glen Schofield shared thisDead Space (the original!) was released 18 years ago today. Man, it doesn’t seem like that long ago. We launched it knowing that playtesting, the team, QA and others who had been playing it, were thoroughly enjoying it. I even had shown it to Mikami during development who shook my hand afterwards and said it was really good. But still, you don’t know what you have until you release it. When the MC scores started coming in, we were relieved and excited about the comments. And it kept getting better. I can’t thank my team enough for their talent, hard work and dedication during development. For putting up with my constant tweaks and sometimes, it seemed like, impossible asks. We followed our vision and never wavered. We reached for new ideas and stretched our imaginations. At some point EA gave me a clear runway to just create our vision and I thank them for that. And to the fans, what can I say but Thank You! You’ve made Dead Space a classic. Your kind words and comments over the years have been so appreciated. You’ve kept DS alive and have passed it down to new generations. Developing Dead Space was one of the greatest honors of my life. It was a magical time, it seemed, where the entire team was all headed in one direction, towards a vision, and then produced something special. Amazing. Again, thank you. A true highlight of my career. (DS4:)

Glen Schofield shared thishttps://lnkd.in/g25xmXnV Thank you Ale and Alex for creating a true behind the scenes video of one of my adventures in art. You both handled the desert like you’ve been there your whole life! I appreciate the effort and the fact that no one got hurt, well besides the cactus needles.

Glen Schofield reposted thisGlen Schofield reposted thisBack in December I sent Glen Schofield a cold message on LinkedIn. I didn't expect a reply. Glen created Dead Space and The Callisto Protocol, and directed multiple Call of Duty titles including Modern Warfare 3 and Advanced Warfare. One of the most influential directors in games. By March he'd invited me to his home to record an episode of The Party is Full. It was a great conversation, and a real privilege to have it in his own workspace rather than over a call. We got into games, craft, and where AI is taking the industry, which feels like exactly the right thing to be talking about right now. Grateful he said yes. Episode's live, link in the comments.

Game art asset factories aren’t enough anymore. Pretty models mean nothing if the shaders won’t compile. True co-development requires technical art literacy. If an external team can’t debug a pipeline, they aren’t helping. They’re generating high-fidelity technical debt. At Artchop!, we build with integration in mind from day one. The real question is whether studios are looking for true integration partners or just capacity. #GDC #CoDev #TechnicalArt

“If you strip all the genre debate down to what consistently works for indies, survival games keep coming up for a reason. Open-world survival and crafting isn't just popular on Steam right now, it aligns almost perfectly with what small and midsized teams can realistically build and support. Survival games sit in that sweet spot where systems do the heavy lifting. Instead of needing 30 or 40 hours of handcrafted content, they rely on mechanics, progression loops, and player-driven goals.”

85% of game studios have dropped degree requirements. So why is it still so hard to find the right talent? 🧐 The truth is, removing a barrier is only half the battle. When you open the floodgates, you get more applicants, but not necessarily more *qualified* candidates. Without a degree as a filter, the burden falls on recruitment to identify "Maker DNA": the innate ability to solve problems and ship products. AI tools are flooding the market with generic resumes, making the search even harder. This is why "Surgical Recruitment" is no longer optional. You need a partner who knows how to spot a closer, with or without the diploma. Is your screening process overwhelmed? Let’s find the signal in the noise. #GameRecruiter #Hiring #GameDevelopment #RecruitmentLife #TechTalent

We've been implementing Neural Texture compression in #Assassinscreedmirage. The overall benefit results in better quality textures for less GPU memory usage (links in the first comment). If you followed the topic since our GDC2024 presentation ,this a very practical application of La Forge's mission to bridge the academic world with Ubisoft. #ubisoft #ubisoftlaforge #innovation 👇 "If you've been thinking, like I have, that we're still some way off seeing AI being used in games for more than just upscaling or frame generation, then it's time to think again" (...) "Enter stage left, neural texture compression to cut down on that memory demand. Given the state of the DRAM and SSD market right now, you can bet your last dollar that a whole heap of game developers will be looking closely at what Ubisoft has done to see if it can help out in their games, too"
