Georgi Matev posted thisA quick professional update: In early July, I stepped away from my role leading the product team for Veeam Data Cloud (VDC). This brings to a close an incredibly productive and rewarding journey of nearly 5 years. It began with the inception of Alcion, where I was fortunate to help build a great company and a world-class team that delivered a robust yet delightful product. Following Alcion’s acquisition by Veeam, my focus shifted to scaling and accelerating VDC, Veeam’s SaaS data resilience platform. And what a rocket ship it was! In less than 24 months, we expanded the product portfolio, grew revenue nearly 10X from an already significant base, and protected hundreds of petabytes of customer data. None of this would have been possible without the many great people I met, worked with, and learned from along the way. There are far too many of you to mention without inevitably leaving someone out, but please accept my sincere thanks for your trust, support, and partnership. What’s next for me? First, I plan to take some much-needed time off to recharge and reconnect with people I haven’t seen in a while. After that, I’ll be spending dedicated time on hands-on agentic engineering - turning few side projects into real systems, testing emerging approaches, and sharpening how these technologies are applied safely and cost-effectively in product development and company building. I’m looking forward to learning by doing and sharing more along the way.

Georgi Matev posted thisRecently, I've had a ton of fun coding on some side projects with both Codex and Claude Code. Today I had an amazing physical world experience where ChatGPT helped me find a lost ski :) My wife had the day off yesterday and was able to take advantage of the great powder at Alpine Meadows. She was skiing some trees when one of her skis popped off. She spent about 2 hrs digging around for it and eventually escaped on one ski. She marked the spot, and today we skied to that same location to look for the ski. I described the details of the fall (terrain, speed, controlled side slide fall, etc). ChatGPT gave me different options about the likely direction and distance where the ski could have slid under the snow and explained the mechanics of what likely happened. The predicted distance was further down where I would have naturally expected and where my wife had dug. I found the ski within 15 mins. The moral of the story is that these models can be a great thought partner especially when we are faced with unfamiliar circumstances.

Absolutely! I think we are living in the intermediate period where mindsets, tools, and formats are adjusting to support shifting the specification of intent, abstraction, and verification layers to positions where human judgement has higher leverage.
There are interesting debates around the precision of natural language, but I would say none of that is new. Even in more traditional engineering before we get to the more precise layer of code there is a lot of refinement and clarification of business intent that tends to happen. But I don't need to tell you this :)

Georgi Matev liked thisGeorgi Matev liked thisI spent 10+ years in payments, including at Meyer "Micky" Malka's first US startup. Getting a credit card for my own startup still tripped me up. Here's what happened after we incorporated Parlor (thanks, Benjamin Spohn!): Attempt 1: A small business card from a major bank. Denied because of our address. It matched our incorporation docs, and the provider advertised it as a business address. But its a rented mailbox, and most financial institutions wont accept one. Attempt 2: Mercury (thanks again, Ben Kromnick!). The bank account opened smoothly. The credit card was another story. When you're bootstrapping, a credit card can come with an expectation that you pay it off the same day. Not quite what I pictured. Now I get why so many founders end up with elite credit card status so fast. The bigger takeaway: Solo founders and bootstrapped teams are everywhere right now. Starting a company has never been cheaper. But the financial tools haven't caught up. The gaps are bigger than I expected, even for someone who's worked on the inside. Two lessons: 1) Before you put a virtual mailbox on your formation docs, check whether your bank will accept it. 2) Find your Ben's early. Founders: what was the most surprising snag when you set up your company's finances?
