Eric Monacelli reposted thisEric Monacelli reposted thisHad an amazing time working on Wolverine’s score with the crew, Scott Hanau Keith Leary Scott Bergstrom Kellogg Boynton IV Rob Goodson and of course composer David Fleming and his team. In addition to live production & mixing, I also got into Wwise and did my thing creating custom spatializations for 7.1.4 and binaural renders of the in-game score, as well as the dynamic Feral Rage system which ramps up the intensity when Wolvie really goes off (distorted reverb FTW, among some other fun processing). I hope you get to enjoy it in the game or just blast the soundtrack. Join us live today at 5Pm PST on YouTube & Twitch, we’ll be streaming a soundtrack listening party with Insomniac Games Creative Director Marcus Smith, composer David Fleming, and hosted by Wolverine voice actor Liam McIntyre. They’ll talk about the score and the creative process behind it, interspersed with five cuts from the soundtrack. https://lnkd.in/eA-v-GQV https://lnkd.in/ecGn7rYZ

Eric Monacelli reposted thisEric Monacelli reposted thisBig thanks to our friends on the Marvel Digital Marketing team who created this BTS look at Marvel's Wolverine, especially Andrea Lans, Alexander Lopez, and Mary Gleason. Thanks to Brian Wyser, Marcus Smith, Grant Hollis, and Eric Monacelli for sharing your time and passion. There were also a ton of people behind the camera who helped make this happen so big thanks, as always, to the incredible people I have the insane privilege of working with.

Eric Monacelli shared thisI've worked on some world-class soundtracks in my career, and Marvel's Wolverine is probably my favorite. David, Scott, Insomniac Games, and the SIE Audio teams dealt all aces. Give it a listen or 11: https://lnkd.in/gDU3MP64Eric Monacelli shared thisRelease week for Marvel’s Wolverine! We’re incredibly proud to have worked alongside composer David Fleming, Insomniac Games and Marvel Games to help produce a score as ferocious, emotional and expansive as the game itself. It’s hard to put into words how many people contribute to a musical score to make it a reality. It takes the most talented team of directors, composers, producers, engineers, orchestrators, musicians, mixers and music designers all working together seamlessly. You can only create something this special with a team as special as this. My only request. If you play our game…..Play it LOUD! Eric Monacelli reposted thisEric Monacelli reposted thisSo much time, so much talent, and so much heart went into Marvel's Wolverine. I am extremely proud of what this team was able to accomplish. There are too many people to thank, but huge congratulations to Insomniac Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the Marvel Games team. I sometimes forget that this is my job and how lucky I am to get to do what I do, but times like these allow me to take a moment and reflect on the great people I get to work with who pour their soul into something and then are brave enough to share it with the world. I'm honored to have my name featured beside them.

Eric Monacelli shared thisI've shipped over 50 games in my career, and few have had deeper meaning to me than Marvel's Wolverine. The 11-year-old kid who discovered Wolverine on the cover of a Jim Lee-drawn comic book in 1991 would be ecstatic to know many decades later he'd be able to work on a video game starring his new favorite mutant, the honor-bound, animal-loving, loner outcast who made him feel seen. Proud of the gritty, hard work that Insomniac Games, Sony Interactive Entertainment, our Marvel Games team, and The Walt Disney Company teams put into this one. We all rose to match Logan's resilience and tenacity. I'm grateful we could give Wolverine some justice. We got to do so much for this game's promotional campaign in terms of firsts, including a D23 trailer in the Marvel showcase, a Disney+ Special Look trailer launch in North America, and a Disney+ app icon rebrand for the PlayStation app, but launching a The Topps Company Topps Now card to celebrate the game launch is deeply special to me. 1990s Marvel trading cards are what took my newfound curiosity about Marvel and turned it into full-blown fandom. These Marvel's Wolverine Topps Now cards are something I pushed hard to make happen. Along with helping create an original prequel Marvel Comic and a super cool homage comic cover for the game, the cards completed the full circle of what 11-year-old me would have wanted for Wolverine.

Eric Monacelli reacted on thisEric Monacelli reacted on thisRockstar Games paid Miami-Dade County about $975,000 for a sign on a roof. It's the roof of the Kaseya Center, where the Miami Heat play, and since September 22 it has read "Welcome to Vice City" in lettering a crew lifted into place by helicopter. It faces the sky, so the audience is anyone with a window seat on the descent into Miami International Airport. Grand Theft Auto VI is out November 19. Miami-Dade County owns the arena, so on this deal the county is the media owner. Some of the inventory I get most excited about belongs to owners whose main business is something else, like running a county. Finding and understanding those owners is a big part of my job. Sometimes the objective is to provide a service like public facilities or water stations first, and media space second. I'm looking for surfaces people already look at, and then the work is making them something a brand can book. The sign stays up at least through the Heat's final home game in April, so there are plenty of landings left to catch it!

Eric Monacelli reacted on thisEric Monacelli reacted on thisI have been a programmer my whole life. I love programming; I always have and always will. There was a time when performance mattered. Those days are gone, and that makes me sad. Squeezing performance out of hardware is a wonderful exercise. It is mental gymnastics. It is agonizing, but when you crack the nut - and you will - it is extreme joy and a sense of satisfaction that is not easily explained. It is pure engineering. The Engineering Design Principle is a systematic, iterative series of steps that is used to solve problems and create new products, systems, or software. Define the problem, measure and analyze, develop a theory for how to improve performance, implement those ideas, then rinse and repeat. In doing so, we build a model of how source code turns into executables. We understand how the compiler works and how hardware behaves. With greater understanding comes better ideas. With those, we get better results. To outsiders, those results can seem magical. Impossible to reach as "mere mortals." It is not magic. It is simply attention to detail. It is caring about the results. Rather than accepting code that works, ask: Can it be better, and if so, how? I was privileged to work at a time when computers were so limited that it was a necessity. Optimizing functions that drew polygons on the screen meant artists and designers could make more complex, better-looking scenes. Being clever about data layouts and avoiding work when possible was an obvious solution to real problems. Today, most programmers do not understand how their hardware works. As a result, they don't understand what the compiler does. I realized decades ago that most programmers care more about what the code looks like than what it does. To me, that's like having a car mechanic who "fixes" your car by changing the oil filter instead of figuring out the root problem. I get it. At some point, compilers got so clever they could beat most programmers at producing efficient code. Or at least, people thought they did. And so the job changed. It was no longer about understanding hardware; it was about making it compile and “work”. In the race to finish projects, you could argue that accepting the slop makes more economic sense. The customer doesn't know that their program could run 10 times more efficiently, so why bother? If they need more processing power, they will just buy more computers. So most organizations no longer care about performance, and neither do most engineers. Well, I am just the oddball old-timer, and I am signing off.

Eric Monacelli reacted on thisEric Monacelli reacted on thisToday was a full-circle moment for me ✨ Years ago, my grandma was annoyed I was glued to my phone playing Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and asked, “What are you possibly going to do with your life if all you do is play video games?” Honestly, fair... But today FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE, which is based on the first story arc of FFBE, released worldwide! It was a privilege to work on my first FF title and lead Western marketing efforts. So grandma, I guess playing video games worked out for me after all💅🏼 Aside from the honor of working on a game that has been widely praised and has fans rallying behind it, I can’t help but also to be proud of the growth I have experienced these past months. In my new role, I have stepped into owning social marketing and have learned first-hand how to develop comprehensive social calendars, draft social copy, monitor community sentiment, and develop assets with social engagement in mind. Back to the game though - if you're wondering if FFR is worth playing, then yes, it’s great! I did not grow up playing the original FF pixel titles, but the mix of nostalgia and modern gameplay sucked me in quickly between turn turn-based combat, character development, and finding all the Visions (Zidane always my fav and Onion Knight for the win). Anyway, thank you to my wonderful team members who supported me on this journey!

Disney spent a decade buying game studios. Almost all of it got written off. At D23 this year it embraced gaming again, and what it embraced was not a studio. It was a licensing business with mandates attached. Even when Disney cannot build the game itself, it can tell you exactly how big Mickey's ears have to be. That is the quiet lesson of the week. Three louder stories ran the other way. Insomniac's developers went public about the Wolverine backlash, while the sales tracking pointed somewhere else entirely. Netflix says its games reached a billion people, and is cutting the division that got them there. And the GTA 6 leak got its biggest amplification from the outlets condemning it. Four companies, four readings of the same instrument. One was reading a report card. Three were reading a feed. If you run community, live ops, or product on a live game, the question is worth asking out loud: when sentiment and the numbers disagree, which one does your team act on by default? Greg Posner, Colan Neese and Justin Ruiss work through all of it on this week's Player Driven Live. Recap and full replay in the comments.

Having Chris Cocks speak at my class previously, the least I could do is make myself available to Hasbro's internal podcast program. After Xbox revealed two weeks ago that some decisions go through 14 (!) layers of management, I think leveraging new channels and formats like this can help flatten an organization and make it more agile. It also humanizes leadership. I wonder if there are any other examples of firms doing this, and what the results have been.

#Sony has been getting bullied across all of its social media accounts, including the ones that have nothing to do with #gaming, ever since it announced it would end physical media for its consoles beginning in 2026. This means the #PlayStation6 will be the company’s first machine to be #digitalonly, a move that has pissed off a lot of people, even ones who don’t normally chime in on the latest gaming controversy. If there is anyone there defending the company’s move to all-digital, I couldn’t find it. A petition being circulated by #PNPGames CEO #JadePearce has already surged to over 160,000 signatures, and some of the most devoted PlayStation #fans claim to be debating whether they will even bother upgrading to #PS6 at all when it comes out or just simply move over to PC instead. While also a digital environment, the open platform provides more choice and DRM-free versions of many games. Underlining the widespread criticism of Sony ditching physical media is the fact that it just recently removed a great many digital movie purchases from customers’ accounts after license agreements lapsed. Will Sony change its mind? 🔗 Read more from Ethan Gach: https://lnkd.in/eN8auyVz

This is a strong signal for where community-driven IP is headed. Community Feels going live on Amazon next week highlights a model that prioritizes discoverability, access, and scale- without sacrificing community ownership. Open editions reduce friction. Mainstream distribution expands reach. Community IP moves from niche to durable. This is what it looks like when digital culture meets real retail infrastructure- and why this approach is becoming increasingly relevant across gaming, entertainment, and creator-led brands. It’s not often I get an in-depth interview on the origins of NBA 2K and NFL 2K. Had a great conversation with Noah at SoftDrinkTV about the early days of 2K, the decisions that shaped those games, and how I see the industry today. Some of what we covered: • Our underdog challenge to EA Sports • The first 2K has a “story” • Design pillar of balancing accessibility and exaggeration with simulation depth • Why sports realism alone doesn’t guarantee fun • Making presentation and polish a high priority (fewer launch features instead) • How monetization of sports games today may be driving away younger players • The coming disruption of sports gaming from AI-first game developers Full interview: https://lnkd.in/e_Nz3xGB
