Bypassing tools such as Windows Defender Antivirus may be challenging, but it can be done. What then? What's left? Command and control (C2) frameworks such as Cobalt Strike, Sliver, and Metasploit typically leave telltale signs of their presence. Eric Conrad liked thisEric Conrad liked thisAsk anyone at SANS about meetings with Lance Spitzner and you will hear the same story. You walk in with an hour blocked off. Twelve minutes later you are walking out with a clear decision and a list of action items, slightly dazed, wondering what just happened. I mention this because we have promoted Lance to SANS Fellow, the highest rank a SANS instructor can hold. The faculty at SANS are world class practitioners and leaders in their respective disciplines… but Lance has got so much done, and I think the twelve-minute meetings explains how one person fit two careers (at least) into one. Lance founded the Honeynet Project while most of the industry was still arguing about firewalls. He set traps for attackers, documented everything they did, and wrote the defining book on it before anyone had coined the phrase cyber threat intelligence. Lots of us learned from him as he goaded attackers in to sharing their tactics. For most people, that is a full career and a comfortable legacy. Lance then set his sights on a new problem. He looked at security awareness, at the time an annual PowerPoint everyone clicked through (I may have clicked through one or two myself), and built it into human risk management: behavioural science, maturity models, a seat at the executive table, and more than 10 million people reached through SANS Security Awareness. He delivers an incredible experience in his classes and many a leader has left enthused, passionate to get back to the office and work on new programs, metrics or campaigns. His OUCH! newsletter is translated into 26 languages entirely by volunteers. Nobody pays them. That is what I mean when I say bet on people. Bet on the ones others show up for, and whom constantly engage and drive the community to better places. Congratulations, Lance. Thank you, twelve minutes at a time. SANS Institute Lance Spitzner

Rooms are staged. The coffee will be brewing before most people are awake. I always get a little quiet the night before. Not because I'm nervous — though there's always some of that — but because I find myself thinking about why we built this in the first place. Atlantic Canada deserved a cybersecurity conference that took it seriously. Not a satellite event. Not a small regional meetup. A real, substantive, two-day conference where professionals, students, and security leaders could come together and actually move the needle on what they know and who they know. Fifteen years of doing this has taught me one thing above all else: the security community, when given the right room and the right conditions, will never disappoint you.
