Dave Newmark shared thisLegendary broadcaster Paul Harvey used to begin his on-air vignettes with the line, 'And now (pause), the REST of the story'. Back then, this one master storyteller used radio to paint mental images for his millions of listeners. Today, podcasting has changed the storytelling math. Now, literally millions of storytellers can inspire their listeners to audiences small and large. Dave Newmark shared this𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 = 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 Lately, I’ve been thinking about podcast advertising like Warren Buffett thinks about stocks: the best opportunities are often the ones many people overlook. Podcasts reach more than half of U.S. adults each month, yet advertisers are still disproportionately pouring way more dollars into other media. The numbers don’t lie - this gap is too big to ignore. Let’s look at the numbers: 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 • Podcasts: 𝟱𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝗨.𝗦. 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗹𝘆 • AM/FM Radio: 𝟵𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗹y 𝗔𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 • Podcasts: $𝟮.𝟰 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 • AM/FM Radio: ~$𝟭𝟯 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 If podcast ad spend matched its audience share relative to radio, it would be around $6.5 billion, nearly triple its current level. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗽 𝗘𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 Podcast ad buying is more complex: • 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Radio uses Nielsen; podcasts rely on fragmented data sources. • 𝗕𝘂𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: Radio has centralized rep firms; podcasting requires contacting individual networks. • 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀: Radio uses standardized CPMs; podcasts vary by CPM, flat fees, or custom packages. • 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁: Radio genres are standardized; podcasts are host-driven and highly personalized. This complexity leads buyers to favor big, easy-to-buy shows - leaving the rest of the market underutilized. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 Despite the challenges, podcast ad revenue has grown steadily over the past decade. More importantly, podcast listeners respond to ads at higher rates than any other medium. According to Sounds Profitable, 𝟮𝟮% 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 after hearing an ad - outperforming streaming TV, YouTube, and social platforms. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 • 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀: Hosts build deep relationships with listeners, lending unmatched credibility to brand messages. • 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀: Listeners choose content intentionally, creating a more attentive environment. • 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: IAB research shows growing third-party verification and standardized reporting. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 Podcast advertising isn’t just a good idea - it’s a 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲. The audience is there. The engagement is real. The math shows clear undervaluation. As Buffett says: 𝘉𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭. In audio, that means betting on podcasts - before everyone else catches on.

Dave Newmark reacted on thisDave Newmark reacted on thisSix Signal Awards for Where the Schools Went! What fun news to start the day. Taking on this project was something I initially resisted. How do you, an outsider, tell the story of 20 years of education in New Orleans and do it justice? You don't. Not in six hours. But you work really hard to tell a story that might inspire people to go deeper, and you do that by centering the people who've spent the last 20 years doing the work. This was the first series where I was responsible for the bulk of the development, reporting, and drafting. Every day I worked on it, I fell more in love with New Orleans and more in awe of the dedicated people who call it home. At a time when education reform increasingly feels like the modern version of an old boys club, New Orleans is reason for hope. Reporting there reminded me what doing the work with excellence looks like: - Keeping kids at the center. - Having the humility to admit when something isn't working, and pivoting quickly. - Putting in the hard hours, knowing the "worth it" moment might be years away. None of it is easy. But when it’s done well, it’s the way you do right by kids and communities. Leading this show was also bittersweet. As I put the final touches on the last episodes, I was winding down the network of shows that made it possible. That makes this recognition even more special. Thank you to everyone who helped The Branch make Where the Schools Went a success, including: - Katie Nelligan, Ed.D. and Ethan Macey-Cushman for hours and hours of research and fact checking (in particular, thank you for helping me chase down what a story about a red corvette has to do with New Orleans schools) - Pallavi Kottamasu, for jumping in as our senior producer to bring both craft and care to each episode and help take the series over the finish line - Sarah Gibble-Laska and Chapter Four for ensuring our reporting turned into an engaging story worth six hours of someone’s time - Alexis McDonell for leading the social work that helped ensure hundreds of thousands of people heard about the series. - Anuja Kulkarni, MBA and Elisabeth Negrin at PodSearch, Inc. for sprinting to ensure the series could get in front of as many audiences as possible. - MeidasTouch and The 74 Media for joining us as a production partner and ensuring their audiences had access to this series - People like ALEXINA MEDLEY, Sarah Usdin, Jerel Bryant, Read Kullman, Chris Meyer, Jonathan Bertsch, Nell Lewis, Francesca Antonucci, Towana Pierre-Floyd, Christopher Stewart, Douglas Harris, Michael Stone, Dana Peterson, and many more (50+!) who generously gave hours and hours of their time, both on and off air, to help us better understand the story we needed to tell. Some of these people had to relive their hardest moments with us - thank you for believing in us to do so with care. Stories like this take time and trust. Despite all the doom about the future of journalism, this series is proof that it’s work still worth doing.

Dave Newmark liked thisDave Newmark liked thisTomorrow is my last day at Daylight Media. Nearly six years ago I joined what was then QCODE — a scripted fiction studio with a handful of shows and a big idea about what audio could be. Together we launched dozens more, expanded into new formats and genres, built creator partnerships and sales that became the backbone of the business, and grew into a top-five podcast network reaching hundreds of millions of listeners and viewers every month. But what I am proudest of isn't the numbers. It's the team we built and the creators who trusted us with their work. Thank you to Rob Herting, David Henning, Ben Curtis, Thomas Mancusi, Jay Green, Kate Friant, Solco Schuit, Ryan Middledorf, Alice Florence Orr, Samantha Sifantus, Scott Kawai, Alia Tavakolian, and everyone who built this with me. As for what's next: if you've worked with me for any amount of time, you know I'm happiest building. I've been thinking a lot about what creators actually need from platforms, and about community and in-person at a moment when trust online is thin. More soon.

Dave Newmark liked thisDave Newmark liked thisI am incredibly excited to share that I have joined with Mynt Agency to be their Head of Podcasts! I never thought I'd end up on the agency side of the podcast business, but Scott Termini, Shane Yarchin, Suchit Majmudar and David Sant convinced me that THIS is the place to be. They believe wholeheartedly in the podcast space and I am SO happy to roll with the team of audio nerds into the future; Tara Ghiselin, Christine Hess and Sunny Boatright. New business, existing business and everything in between, if you want to learn more about how podcasts work in general but have been to sheepish to ask, now is the time 😊

Dave Newmark liked thisDave Newmark liked thisI’m still buzzing from last week. Being on TODAY to talk about The 25th Hour was a moment I’ll remember forever. But what I can’t stop thinking about is how unusual the whole experience was. I was there as an author. I was there as a guest. And I was there with Hoda Kotb, someone I’ve had the privilege of coaching, sitting next to me and asking me about the ideas in the book. There was something very satisfying about multiple parts of my life intersecting at one time. The book is about making room for what matters. Today, I was reminded to make room for the moment itself. To remain present. And to enjoy the fact that sometimes the work takes you somewhere you never expected to be. Thank you, Hoda. Thank you, Jenna. Thank you, Sheinelle. And thank you to the entire TODAY team. I still can’t stop smiling. https://lnkd.in/gfC7bVR7Hoda Kotb and Leadership Coach Neal Schore on Being a LeaderHoda Kotb and Leadership Coach Neal Schore on Being a Leader

A little over four months ago, The Hollywood Reporter proclaimed: YouTube Just Ate TV. It’s Only Getting Started. In his outstanding article, Alex Weprin dished the dirt on CEO Neal Mohan and "his $100 billion vision for YouTube’s future and the disruption it’s left in its wake." But while more and more media dollars pour into the platform, the eternal question on the marketers' minds is: what's the ROI? Fortunately, Adelaide has the answers. On March 18th, Zach Kubin from Adelaide will be joined by execs from Google and WPP Media to share their findings at the Advertising Research Foundation (ARF). The event will be live + streamed; details in the post below. #everybusinessislikeshowbusiness
