Brian Wenzel reposted thisBrian Wenzel reposted thisEvery Friday I pull the lines that outlived the conversation they came from. Three that earned a second life this week: Chuck Fagan, CEO, Velera: "CEOs are seldom told the complete truth. Find people willing to give it to you and keep them close by." Chuck's parting wisdom, our last conversation before he retires. We went "off road," his phrase for letting a talk drift where it wants to, which is how most of ours have gone over eight years. We covered his first day in the CEO seat, his hardest moments and how he got through them, what it's like to interview Tom Brady at Velera LIVE, and what comes after he hands the baton to Brian Caldarelli in September. Prajit Nanu, Founder & CEO, Nium: "Today, stablecoins are like a drug trying to treat 20 different problems." Prajit's bet. The tech lands one real use case, maybe two. The twist? He doesn't think it's payments. It's a treasury layer. Move value instantly between your own entities, borrow against trapped balances overnight, and finally see your dollar liquidity across the whole enterprise at once. Watch the full conversation for why trapped liquidity makes stablecoins a bottom-line decision, and why the banks still own the trust layer. Brian Wenzel, CFO, Synchrony: "The consumers we see are engaging and spending more on a frequent basis." Right after Synchrony reported Q2 earnings, Brian described a consumer who isn't behaving the way the headlines say. Still spending, still paying down debt, shopping more often, even as affordability pressure hits income and credit tiers differently. We also got into how bullish Synchrony is on AI, what they're seeing from the Walmart OnePay partnership, why frequency beats basket size, and what their credit data says about the health of the consumer. Thanks for reading. Have a great weekend.

For health and wellness providers already on Stripe, this means CareCredit financing can be activated directly within the platform they use every day, with no separate integration required. Brian Wenzel shared thisAlways a great conversation with Karen Webster. Thank so much for the opportunity to discuss how consumers are managing their financial situations in this prolonged inflationary period.Brian Wenzel shared thisWhat happens when you ask a CFO about consumers, business and AI instead of asking an economist or a technologist? You get a much more grounded answer. In my conversation with Synchrony CFO Brian Wenzel, right after Q2 earnings dropped, two things stood out. First, the consumer isn't behaving the way the prevailing narrative suggests. Synchrony's results show people are still spending, paying down debt and shopping more frequently, even as affordability pressure lands differently across income and credit tiers. Second, Wenzel is decidedly bullish on AI. But he views it through the lens every CFO should. Where does it create measurable value? AI has the potential to reshape commerce, customer engagement and productivity, but the winners will be the companies that can translate innovation into economic returns. (They are.) At the same time, recognizing that the productivity curve is taking longer than some might have expected to realize. We also discussed what Synchrony is seeing from the Walmart OnePay partnership, why transaction frequency matters more than basket size, and what the company's credit data says about the health of the consumer. It's a conversation about what the data says, not what the headlines might assume.

Taking a true look into the company’s values, I saw firsthand how innovation and collaborative leadership drive their business forward. The genuine investment in early-career talent made a lasting impact on me, and I hope to make a valuable contribution while continuing to grow and develop my leadership and technical skills. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to learn, gain hands-on experience in finance, and grow alongside an incredible team. I am eager to contribute, grow, and bring value to the team this coming year. I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who guided and supported me throughout the externship and interview process. During my time with the firm, I gained hands-on experience at the intersection of law and collegiate athletics. I researched legal and regulatory issues involving Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights, evaluated NCAA compliance requirements and athlete representation considerations, and deepened my understanding of the rapidly evolving legal landscape surrounding college sports. One highlight of my experience was helping build the Sportswomen NIL Collective, an initiative focused on expanding NIL opportunities and visibility for female athletes. I’m thankful to Christine Brown & Partners and the entire team for such a meaningful experience and for everything I learned throughout the summer.

The U.S. economy is growing but the reality underneath the headline numbers is more complex. In this guest editorial for Finopotamus, Bill Handel explores how today’s economy is increasingly bifurcated with strong GDP growth and resilient asset holders on one side, and rising financial pressure on everyday households on the other. Bill explains how this split is driving higher delinquencies, shifting consumer borrowing behavior, and uneven pressure across loan portfolios, housing markets, and customer segments. These dynamics create real challenges for banks and credit unions—but also meaningful opportunities for institutions that can spot early signs of stress and respond quickly to better serve their customers and members. The takeaway: this is a moment for disciplined risk management and smarter use of data, analytics, and AI, not retreat. Bill outlines how financial institutions can support customers, modernize decision making, and pursue sustainable growth through 2026 and beyond. Many FIs continue to chase mass affluent customers, but according to Curinos’ Kurt Vogt Gwerder, a more rewarding cohort may be hiding in plain sight: the mass market. They may start with less than $10k in balances, but they’re customers in motion. Over time, they stick around, add products and evolve into higher-value relationships at meaningful scale. Mass affluent, by contrast, may come in with large balances but tend not to grow them. Amplero Personalizer Optimizer can help personalize the needed engagement for the mass market and nurture their value over time. As credit unions look ahead, one theme continues to surface in our conversations with leaders across the industry: infrastructure is no longer just operational, but now, it’s strategic. In particular, payments are becoming a litmus test for institutional readiness. Real-time rails, tokenization, rising fraud sophistication, and rapidly shifting member expectations are forcing credit unions to rethink how their systems support growth, trust, and long-term resilience. A recent CUInsight.com article outlines four trends shaping this shift and makes a compelling case that payments can’t remain a back-office function if institutions want to stay competitive in the years ahead. From our vantage point at Stearns Financial, the credit unions best positioned for the future are the ones treating infrastructure decisions as part of broader balance sheet strategy, risk management, and member value creation. The question for 2026 isn’t just what tools to adopt, but how those tools align with an institution’s mission, governance, and long-term stewardship. 🔗 Here: https://lnkd.in/ekpT4aAY What infrastructure decisions do you see becoming strategic differentiators for credit unions this year? #CreditUnions #FinancialStrategy #PaymentsInnovation #CreditUnionLeadership #DigitalTransformation #StearnsFinancial

“Fraud leadership isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about building a room full of smart people, and elevating them.” In part 1 of Hailey Windham, CFCS's conversation with Ted Josephson, VP of Bank Fraud & Credit Strategy at Synchrony Financial, they unpack what it actually looks like to lead fraud prevention at enterprise scale, where fraud, credit, growth, and customer experience collide. Listen in as they discuss: • The mindset shift from operator to enterprise risk leader • Where fraud and credit intersect (and why definitions break down in practice) • Why “friction” is the F word; what fraud teams are really advocating for is protection • How incentives in marketing and acquisition collide with risk reality • The fastest way leaders lose credibility • Why moving too slow on controls can be the most dangerous move The core takeaway: fraud leadership is transformation, and culture is a control. 🎙WATCH the full episode and subscribe on YouTube: @FraudForward ▶️ LISTEN on your favorite podcast provider: https://lnkd.in/eRFnHPwd Guest lineup: Ted Josephson - VP, Bank Fraud & Credit Strategy, Synchrony Financial Hailey Windham, CFCS - Host of Fraud Forward & Community Banking Lead, Sardine

$FIS: FIS delivered a strong Q4 and full year 2025, beating revenue expectations with 5.8% growth driven by its banking segment. Adjusted EPS hit $5.75, and free cash flow generation was robust. The company is strategically divesting its merchant business and acquiring a credit issuing leader, simplifying its portfolio and strengthening its financial services focus. AI is a key growth accelerant for FIS, with a 4X investment in data and AI transformation. Leveraging its vast, proprietary data sets, FIS is building domain-specific AI capabilities for fraud prevention, customer acquisition, and back-office automation. This "data moat" is a significant competitive advantage as AI adoption accelerates across the financial industry. The banking segment continues to be a star performer, exceeding growth targets for the second consecutive year with 8.3% revenue growth in Q4. Looking ahead, FIS projects 30-31% adjusted revenue growth and 34-35% EBITDA growth for 2026, fueled by the Total Issuing Solutions acquisition and AI integration. While 2026 adjusted EPS guidance of $6.22-$6.32 slightly missed consensus, the company aims to double free cash flow to over $3 billion by 2028.
