Brian Nolan shared thisCan we all just agree to stop using OnTrac for any kind of delivery? Holy hell, they are the WORST! I don't think I've had even one successful delivery from them and they essentially have no customer support. All phone numbers are disconnected. They are seriously a borderline scam and need to be investigated. If we all just STOP USING THEM, they will go away naturally. Michael Brown, what is going on?

Brian Nolan reposted thisBrian Nolan reposted thisWhat was I thinking? 30 years ago this week I started a “1-year experiment” to build a startup factory based loosely on Thomas Edison’s laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. It was early 1996 and the Internet was growing like crazy after the Netscape IPO, with a whopping 30 million global users (which seems hysterically tiny now). But I felt that this was a disruptive event that with the potential for many new businesses. I wanted to make a lab where I could take my favorite 12 ideas, try one a month for a year, and see if we could make a go of dreaming up, starting, and growing companies. After a year, 5 of those 12 had failed, 7 were able to get additional funding beyond the seed capital we provided, and eventually 5 of our earliest companies went public. We learned so many lessons living through the dot com boom and crash, the 2007 boom and 2008 crash, more recently the CleanTech boom and crash, and now the Ai boom. With a great deal of good timing, good luck and an amazing team of people I worked with over the years, we were able to start more than 150 companies in the last 30 years. I believe that entrepreneurship unlocks human potential and provides so much personal growth. I love helping other entrepreneurs be successful, and hope to give back as much as I can from the joys and challenges of the last 30 years of Idealab (here is a link to my top lessons learned: https://lnkd.in/gUrW2eVf ). I am so grateful for the tens of thousands of people who came into our orbit to help make the dreams of each of our companies come true.. Thank you so much, and Happy Birthday Idealab! Sincerely, Bill

Brian Nolan shared thisYesterday, my company, Darren & Phillip , kicked off our 9th annual Blueboys Christmas Appeal, our biggest fundraiser of the year benefiting several dog rescue organizations around the world. Over the past nine years, what started as a small initiative has grown into a global community effort. Together, we’ve raised over $1.2 million to support rescue organizations doing life-saving work for dogs who need it most. This mission is one of the main reasons I decided to purchase this brand over a year ago. It reflects the heart of our community and the belief that businesses can, and should, have a positive impact beyond profit. If you’d like to follow along or support the appeal, I’d be grateful. Even small contributions like $5 add up to meaningful change. Donate at https://lnkd.in/gHQaQSES Thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible year after year.

Brian Nolan shared thisAwesome new venture by my good friend, Gene Hong.Brian Nolan shared thisThis is the start of something I’ve been quietly building. Aperture North is more than a name. It’s a mindset. A direction. A way of seeing differently and building what comes next. Over the years, I’ve worked across the intersection of design, leadership, innovation, and culture—inside startups, at scale with Fortune 40s, and alongside founders shaping what’s possible. Now, I’m opening the aperture. Alongside my current leadership role in corporate, this space is a home for ideas, insights, experiments, and conversations around how we lead and design with clarity and vision in a rapidly changing world. I’ll be taking on select opportunities to partner on: 🔹 Strategic and creative advisory 🔹 Speaking engagements and keynotes 🔹 Board & startup advisory (with values-aligned organizations) If you’re building something meaningful and want a creative partner who can help connect vision to execution—I’d love to talk. 🟢 DM me for speaking or advisory inquiries—or just to say hello. Let’s think wider. Lead better. And build the future from a different angle. Brian Nolan shared thisThis clever and entertaining video points out the harsh truth… these insane tariffs *will* negatively impact small businesses in our country (mine included) that cannot bear the burden of a massive import tax.Brian Nolan shared thisThank you all so much for the incredible outpouring of support on my last post re: Pashion Footwear's SBA loan fallout & incoming duty hikes (which we've now learned could skyrocket as high as 99% on our textile line - effectively doubling product costs). Your kind words about our business have meant the world. In addition to the outpouring of support, I've also realized that many people outside of CPG are not aware of the extent of this situation and it's impact on small businesses, but are very eager to learn. The news coverage has widely chosen to discuss this matter as an "attack on Temu and Shein" - which could not be further from the truth (a truth that, sadly, will destroy small businesses much faster than large corporations like the aforementioned). To keep the convo going, I threw together a narrative representation of the situation. #tradewar #smallbusiness #tarriffs #manufacturing #USbusiness #startup #government

This year, we have these beautiful boxes, inspired by the doors of our North Beach roastery, and the ability to customize gifts at scale, right down to handwritten notes for every recipient: https://lnkd.in/gJpi26GV Proud of the folks at Graffeo who brought this to life, particularly Arielle Danan, Bethany Ren, and Odding Wang, who did the design. It's always amazing what a small, motivated team can accomplish. And of course, if I can help with holiday gifts for your team or clients, feel free to email me directly. I'd be pretty stoked to get one of these myself! 👏 ☕ 🩷

Safety will always be job one at the Hollywood Burbank Airport! Once all the clearance were place, it was an incredibly well executed project going from concept design to an a fully operating Airport in 3.5 years. A true rarity to have a project of the size $1.3 billion to be done on time and on budget! Credit goes to many including our incredible staff & fellow Commissioners at the Airport plus Jacobs engineering, Holder Construction, Pankow Construction plus the many other trades and hundreds of skilled craft people - all inspired by the beautiful silver screen retro concept by Corgan! Congrats on a job well done. I am particularly grateful to my colleagues on the finance committee and Ricondo & Associates, Inc. and Public Resources Advisory Group for helping masterfully lineup, the complex financing in a difficult market at the lowest cost without any taxpayer dollars! Now we can say not only is Hollywood Burbank Airport the most convenient airport in Southern California but now will be the nicest airport in Southern California - come check it out!

Brian Nolan liked thisThe more I’ve gotten to know Amir Harpaz, the more I realize: A. Amir’s the type of person everyone WANTS to “work for” / have as a customer. B. Amir’s a stellar example of the type customer whom the more you know, the more you want to see be wildly successful. And the more we can add to their success, the HUNGRIER the entire team gets to drive even more successes! Feel so lucky to be reminded that the WHY we do what we do is so heavily driven by the WHO we get to do it for!

I work with teams who have plenty of data but still have to decide what to change next.

In marketing, information isn’t scarce. The harder part is that signals arrive out of sync, and decisions still have to hold. Product data points one way. Growth metrics point another. Customer feedback shows up late, filtered, or after the decision was already made. Each input makes sense on its own. Together, they don’t form a clear move.

A decision still has to be made.

I’ve spent a long time working inside that tension.

Since the early 2000s, I’ve co-founded and built several SaaS companies, including Crazy Egg, KISSmetrics, and Nira. Nira was acquired by Dropbox, where I later worked on product and growth for AI products. Across all of that work, the same pattern kept showing up.

Inside larger teams, decisions often sound solid in the moment. The trouble starts later. The context behind earlier calls fades. The constraints that mattered at the time don’t travel. Reasoning gets simplified, rewritten, or lost entirely. When questions resurface, teams argue about direction instead of revisiting the original judgment.

I’m now back as CEO of Crazy Egg. The work there focuses on keeping teams close to what users actually do, especially when opinions start to harden. When user behavior stays visible, decisions tend to settle. When it disappears, debates stretch and momentum softens.

That pattern shows up across most of what I work on.

I spend a lot of time thinking about how GTM leaders make decisions when product direction, growth pressure, and market narrative pull in different directions. Information is incomplete. Costs are uneven. Timing rarely feels generous. What matters is whether a decision holds long enough for a team to move.

If you’re responsible for aligning product, growth, and messaging and feel the weight of getting it wrong, this is the layer I spend my time in.

Sometimes the shopper did not choose the wrong size. The garment was built around the wrong shape. If a brand designs around an hourglass fit form, but most shoppers are apple-shaped, triangle-shaped, inverted-triangle-shaped, or pencil-shaped, changing sizes may not solve the problem. The issue is not always size. It is proportion. What would you change if you knew your shoppers’ body shapes and measurements at scale? Your fit form? Your grade rules? Your silhouettes? Your product photography and marketing? Size recommendation helps shoppers choose from the product that exists. The bigger opportunity is using body-shape intelligence to make better product decisions before the next return. Check out the WAIR Newsletter: https://lnkd.in/ggFqbP4D to learn more

The market picks aren't random. When we look at a new territory, we're not just looking at population. We're looking at dog household density. Household income bands. Proximity to the routines people already have (gyms, coffee shops, grocery runs). Dogs fit into routines. The neighborhoods where people have routines are the ones where a membership model finds its footing. Annapolis. San Antonio. These aren't pins on a map. They're reads on where demand already exists and where a consistent, repeatable model can do what it's designed to do. The first 90 days in a new market should feel almost pre-season 🏈 on purpose. Repeat the playbook. Measure what matters. Let the membership base build. That's usually where the compound effect starts.

Went on NTD's Tiffany Meier Tonight last night to talk about a number most people in pet tech would rather ignore: Millions of adoptable animals sit in shelters every year. Meanwhile families spend weeks scrolling, give up, and buy instead. Everyone calls it an awareness problem. It's not. It's a matching problem and matching is a technical one 👩💻 . That's the whole thesis behind Paaw. We built a matching engine on behavioral data from 4,000+ shelter partners. Right person, right animal, first time. Those who've followed Paaw from the start know something is coming this quarter. Those just discovering us today… you'll want to be in the loop before the announcement drops. Stay tuned. 🚀

This isn’t surprising. Most people are talking about Allbirds like this is an AI story. It’s not. It’s a brand identity story. You can pivot a business model overnight. You can rename a company in a day. But you can’t pivot what people believe about you that fast. That’s earned slowly. And lost all at once. The brands that last don’t chase the next narrative. They compound trust with the people who already chose them. Because a real brand isn’t just what you sell. It’s what people see themselves in. And that doesn’t reprice overnight. https://lnkd.in/gFVnpb7u

“The best practices are yet to be defined.” I loved this statement from Katie Dill at last week's Lenny & Friends Summit! Her entire presentation was fantastic, but that statement really resonated. Katie highlighted how architectural design shifted post WW2, inspired by the minimalist movement, but lost the importance of the intention behind them from the original artists. It was not flat-for-flat sake. There was meaning behind it all. The ornate designs that preceded it were also highly intentional. Looking at an old bank building evokes feelings of trust and security. It wasn’t ornate just to be decorative. Intentionality was a recurring theme throughout the summit. As I mentioned in an earlier post, every pixel on the screen is fighting for scarce attention. We have to be intentional with our choices. It is a driving core principle behind the work we do here at Halo, and a huge part of what makes our work here so exciting. We are continuously working on new experiences, creating new designs, new interaction patterns, to help solve meaningful problems for pet owners, AND that will shape and define future best practices!

A lot of people still think TikTok Shop only works if you’re a super promotional, discount-heavy brand. WITHIN helped Timberland launch and scale on TikTok Shop without racing to the bottom on price. The results: → $1M+ in revenue → Top 25 footwear shop on TikTok (in ~4 months) → Sold at full price — no heavy discounting What actually worked: • Letting creators drive, not the brand • Picking products built for discovery (not just bestsellers) • Using paid to scale what was already working organically • Protecting margin from day one More here: https://lnkd.in/gbEXBwHP
