Tracy is an environmental engineer, research scientist, and award-winning science communicator with a BS, ME, and PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Florida. She spent nearly a decade designing water systems around the world, and her expertise spans stormwater hydrology, coastal and ocean modeling, water quality, and harmful algal blooms. At NOAA's National Ocean Service, Tracy served as Coastal Modeling Portfolio Manager, overseeing U.S. coastal and ocean modeling efforts, leading development of the National Ocean Service Vision, Strategy and Implementation Plan, and managing the Coastal and Ocean Modeling Testbed. Before NOAA, she led the Environmental Health research program at Mote Marine Laboratory, where she became a leading expert voice during the 2018 Florida red tide crisis and developed citizen science programs, water treatment technology for Earth and space (including aquaponics research with NASA), and public environmental data tools reaching more than 1.7 million users. She is a National Science Foundation SPICE Fellow, a U.S. Presidential Management Fellow, and a two-time national winner of the EPA's stormwater design competition. Today, Tracy is the Founder of Inspector Planet and CTO of Project ENKI, a flood forecasting and education platform that helps communities prepare for severe storms. She is also one of the most recognized science communicators in the country, with appearances on Discovery's Shark Week, MythBusters, and The Weather Channel, and she leads STEM programs for young women, including Mission: Tampa Bay. Her expertise will be particularly valuable as Ocean Core Networks advances its work in ocean sensing and environmental intelligence. SMART cables and other ocean observing infrastructure generate the kind of continuous, real-time data that improves the coastal and ocean forecasting models Tracy has spent her career building. Her rare combination of operational modeling experience and public communication will help ensure that new ocean data translates into better predictions, better decisions, and greater public understanding of our changing oceans. As my engagement with the Institute of Acoustics slowly comes to an end (more on that, soon!), I've been collecting favourite sounds from colleagues and friends. Enjoy. 🎻 An oboe tuning an orchestra. 🐚 A conch held to the ear. �� The sea dragging back over shingle.⚡A Spitfire overhead. 🍾 A champagne cork. 💳 The cheerful ding of a successful card payment. 🎾 That distinctive thock of tennis on Wimbledon's grass. 🐱 A cat's chirrupy "prrrp." 🍼 A baby drinking milk. 👶 Children breathing as they sleep. 🥂 A finger singing round a wine glass. 📏 A ruler twanged off the edge of a desk. ⛈️ Thunder and rain on a tent. ⚽ A goal cheer erupting in a stadium. 🎶 Allegri's Miserere, sung by King's College Choir. 🚗 A Mercedes-AMG GT S and a Ducati Panigale. 🌌 A black hole humming in B-flat, 57 octaves below middle C.
