The updated research shows that 88% of organizations now use AI in at least one business function. Fewer than 4 in 10 have scaled it past the pilot stage. MIT's research this year found that 95% of enterprise generative AI pilots never produce measurable P&L impact. PwC's latest CEO survey found 56% of CEOs say their AI investment has delivered nothing they can point to. The problem was never whether AI works. Foundational models are commodity now, available to every competitor on the same terms. What separates the organizations pulling ahead is whether they've industrialized AI: moved it from experimental chats and disconnected pilots into a governed operating infrastructure a board can actually underwrite. While ROI indicates whether an implementation has paid for itself, it fails to address critical issues such as physician burnout, access gaps for vulnerable patients, and the erosion of organizational trust that can take years to rebuild. A financially acceptable outcome does not equate to a successful one. In my doctoral research published in the Open Journal of Business and Management earlier this year, I interviewed senior healthcare technology executives across the New York metropolitan area regarding this challenge. The leaders who consistently generate value have shifted from an ROI mindset to what I refer to as a Value-on-Investment (VOI) orientation. This approach encompasses governance, clinician experience, value measurement, and digital equity as essential disciplines rather than mere afterthoughts. I am thrilled to share that my research on healthcare technology investment optimization strategies has officially been published in the Open Journal of Business and Management. In healthcare, we spend billions annually on technology, yet many of these investments fail to deliver their full potential. My research explored a critical question: How can leadership move past traditional financial metrics to ensure technology actually improves the lives of patients and clinicians? Through interviews with senior digital health executives, four "pillars of success" emerged for any organization looking to optimize its digital investments: ✅ Shift from ROI to VOI (Value on Investment): Success isn't just about the bottom line. It is about measuring clinician well-being, patient experience, and operational resilience. ✅ Treat Tech as a "Product," Not a "Project": Moving toward continuous, evidence-driven learning cycles rather than one-time implementations. ✅ Design for People, Not Processes: Prioritizing "Human-Centric Design" to eliminate or reduce friction and clinician burnout in care delivery. ✅ Operationalize Digital Equity: Ensuring technology bridges the gap for marginalized populations rather than widening the digital divide. Technology should be a bridge to better care, not a barrier. I hope the frameworks in this article provide a useful roadmap for my fellow leaders navigating these complex digital transformations. This milestone would not have been possible without the invaluable guidance of my research mentor, Dr. Kim Critchlow. The RZA’s ability to unify nine fiercely independent artists into the Wu-Tang Clan while architecting a cohesive brand, sound, and long-term business strategy demonstrates the exact systems thinking, stakeholder management, and vision a CIO needs to align technology with organizational goals. His chess-inspired approach to anticipating threats, protecting intellectual property, and innovating under constraints (from pioneering sampling techniques to navigating a cutthroat industry) would translate directly into the risk foresight and defensive discipline required of a strong CISO.
