It is with a heavy heart that Marriott International announces that our beloved President and CEO, Arne Sorenson, passed away unexpectedly yesterday after a fight with pancreatic cancer. Earlier today, I shared an update with Marriott International associates. I, along with my family and my medical team, remain optimistic and I look forward to when I can return full-time. Until that day, stay focused, stay strong and let’s do great work together.

I had a great virtual conversation with Hotel News Now’s Stephanie Ricca at ALIS today about when the hospitality industry can expect a recovery, how developers are proceeding amidst uncertainty and how we may see a blending of business and leisure travel when we all try to get back to the office later this year. As a CEO, I sometimes find it helpful to get an outside perspective. I find talking to someone outside of your industry can broaden your focus. With that in mind, I recently sat down with a long-time friend and a highly regarded leader, Dara Khosrowshahi, who took over as CEO of Uber in 2017 after serving as CEO of Expedia. He joined me virtually during one of my senior leadership meetings, sharing his thoughts on how he has led his company in the face of COVID-19 and what he thinks both the recovery and the future of the travel industry will look like.
