Akhilesh S. shared thisRetail has spent years obsessing over intelligence at the customer edge. Smarter recommendations. Faster checkout. Dynamic pricing. Hyper-personalized experiences. And all of that matters. But I've been thinking about a less glamorous question: What happens when these increasingly intelligent systems fail? Because modern retail is no longer just stores, warehouses and payment terminals. It is an interconnected digital organism. AI models influencing pricing. APIs synchronizing inventory. ⭕ Cloud-native checkout infrastructure. ⭕ Third-party marketplaces. ⭕ Embedded payments. ⭕ Fulfillment orchestration layers. And in systems like these, failure is rarely isolated. A checkout issue is not just a checkout issue. A bad inventory sync can trigger fulfillment chaos. A compromised vendor integration can become an enterprise-wide operational event. The more sophisticated retail becomes, the more brittle it can become, unless resilience evolves alongside innovation. That's why I believe retail leadership may need to rethink resilience entirely. Not as perimeter security. Not as uptime reporting. But as recoverability. 🔺 How quickly can your systems detect abnormal behavior? 🔺How intelligently can they contain disruption? 🔺How gracefully can they preserve continuity? 🔺How safely can they recover? Biology offers an interesting analogy here. Healthy immune systems don't assume threats will never arrive. They detect. Contain. Adapt. Recover. Perhaps retail infrastructure should begin behaving similarly. The next competitive edge in retail may not come from who personalizes fastest. It may come from who recovers smartest. Akhilesh S. shared thisBanaras Doesn’t Organize Chaos. It Teaches You How To Sit Inside It. There’s something almost unsettling about Varanasi the first time you arrive. The noise feels louder. The lanes feel narrower. The crowds feel endless. You look around trying to make sense of it all. And then slowly… the city stops asking you to understand it. It simply asks you to surrender. Standing at the ghats, I kept thinking of Nataraja and Tandava, the cosmic dance where creation and destruction move together so seamlessly that separating one from the other becomes impossible. At one ghat, lamps rise into the air during Ganga Aarti. At another, funeral pyres burn endlessly through the night. Both rituals. Both sacred. Both accepting impermanence in completely different ways. And somehow… neither interrupts the other. That was the moment Banaras stopped feeling like a city to me. It started feeling like a living operating system. Not optimized. Not curated for comfort. But deeply aware that life itself is built on simultaneous contradictions. Tourists often arrive overwhelmed here. Too much movement. Too much sound. Too much emotion. But something strange happens before they leave. They acclimatize. The chaos begins to feel rhythmic. And somewhere there, Banaras begins revealing lessons for the modern world. ⭕ Distributed Intelligence No single person controls Banaras. Yet it functions with astonishing continuity. Like decentralized systems, intelligence here is distributed across millions of interactions happening simultaneously. ⭕ The Micro Reflecting the Macro Ancient philosophy spoke of Atman and Brahmaand long before technology understood interconnected systems. A single action influences larger ecosystems. Tiny nodes shape massive outcomes. The micro continuously shapes the macro. ⭕ Resilience Through Continuous Transformation Banaras survives because it never freezes itself in time. Death exists beside celebration. Endings coexist beside beginnings. The strongest systems evolve similarly. In tech, we obsess over seamless experiences. But Banaras reminds us that meaningful systems are not always frictionless. Sometimes meaning comes from immersion. From discomfort. From participation. Not every powerful system is meant to feel controlled. Some are meant to feel alive. And maybe that’s the deeper lesson Banaras quietly leaves behind: The future may belong to systems wise enough to dance with chaos. Like the Ganga. Like Nataraja. Over the years, I’ve realised that some of the strongest systems I’ve ever seen were not built inside boardrooms or businesses. They were built by women who kept showing up… even when nobody noticed how tired they were. This Mother’s Day, I find myself thinking about many versions of that strength. About my mother… who probably gave away pieces of herself quietly so her children could become more than circumstance. As children, we rarely understand sacrifice while it happens. We only recognise it years later- inside our habits, our resilience, our conscience. I still remember one particular winter night. Minus the school sweater, I was anxious as the winter uniform had been announced compulsory. I just wanted to show up dressed like everyone else. There wasn’t much time. And honestly, not much margin either. But that night, while the world slept, she stayed awake. Sewing. Knitting. Piecing together warmth and dignity for her child with her own hands. At that age, I only saw a sweater. Today, I understand what it really was: love working overtime in silence. I think about how she pursued her Master’s in Medicine while balancing a home, children, responsibilities, and exhaustion that probably never had the luxury of being acknowledged. And then life moved forward. Years passed. Retirement arrived. Most people slow down at that stage. She decided to learn driving at 60. Not to impress nor to prove a point. Simply to go to the hospital on her own without depending on auto hires, drivers, or anyone else. And even now… without speeches or philosophy, she continues teaching me one of life’s greatest lessons: Learning has no age. Dignity has no retirement. Strength does not always announce itself loudly. I think about the mother of my children… who carried responsibilities I could not always see while I was busy carrying ambitions the world could see. One gets applauded. The other sustains life quietly in the background. And then… there are my daughters. Life has a strange sense of humor. One day you are teaching your children how to walk through the world… and before you realise it, they begin teaching you how to stand still inside it. V… with the sharp logic of a tenth grader, somehow manages to challenge my thinking with startling clarity. And G… calm in ways I still aspire to become… has this quiet ability to dissolve tension without announcing it. Some people don’t enter a room loudly. They simply soften it. That too is a rare form of strength. Motherhood, I’ve learnt, is not only biological. At times it is emotional labor, and at others protection. Sometimes a sacrifice and then just presence.And sometimes, it is the quiet hand on your shoulder that reminds you: “You can rest for a minute. I’ve got this.” To every woman carrying worlds silently while helping others grow inside them… #HappyMothersDay.

Some musings... connecting a few dots. For years, we've assessed talent the way we were taught to measure certainty. Resumes | Years of experience l Tech stacks, neatly listed like ingredients on a label. But the workplace has changed faster than our lenses. 🔴 Roles are evolving in months, not years. 🔴 Skills are expiring quietly, without notice. 🔴 And the most valuable people today are often the hardest to "categorize." Which makes the traditional question- "Does this person fit the role?" a little outdated. Maybe the better question is: How does this person think when the role itself keeps changing? Because in a world shaped by #AI, #Automation, and constant #Transformation: What you know matters. But how you learn, unlearn, and connect dots matters more. Over time, I've started noticing a pattern. The people who create disproportionate impact are rarely the ones who check every box. They are the ones who: 🔴 Navigate ambiguity without freezing 🔴 Learn faster than the problem evolves 🔴 And bring a certain... quiet clarity into chaos Not always the loudest. Not always the most obvious. But often the most aligned with where the world is going. If AI is reshaping work, then talent evaluation cannot remain rooted in the past. Because we're no longer hiring for roles alone. We're hiring for trajectory. For the ability to evolve with the system... and sometimes, ahead of it. Creating a company, rebuilding a company, and renewing a company… are three very different journeys, yet we often speak about them as if they’re the same. I’ve spent years in the business of building especially in IT, where the pace doesn’t just demand growth… it demands reinvention. And if there’s one pattern that keeps repeating, it’s this: Creation is instinct: You begin with belief before proof. You build with limited resources, uncertain markets, and a quiet stubbornness that refuses to let an idea die. At that stage, logic is helpful… but conviction is everything. Growth is architecture: This is where most good ideas struggle. Because scaling an IT company isn’t about writing better code. It’s about designing #Systems, #Teams, #Processes, #Culture, #Delivery. You move from doing everything… to ensuring everything gets done. From building products… to building people who build products. But starting again? That’s something else entirely. Starting a new venture. Building a new team. Creating from a clean slate, while carrying the weight of experience. It sounds like a reset. It isn’t... It’s a test of whether you’ve actually learned anything. I’ve always believed in creating. Almost to a fault. There’s a certain refusal in me, to not let things die, to not let ideas fade quietly. But here’s something I’ve had to come to terms with: ⭕What stops evolving… eventually stops existing. And no amount of attachment can change that. So sometimes, the most responsible thing you can do as a founder…is not to hold on. It’s to begin again. ⭕New teams don’t inherit your legacy. They inherit your clarity. ⭕ New systems don’t care about your past wins. They respond to your current thinking. ⭕ New ventures don’t reward nostalgia. They demand relevance. Many founders romanticize starting from zero. But zero is not where you begin again. You begin with experience. With scars. With pattern recognition that quietly guides your decisions. And that changes everything. So the real question isn’t: “Are you building something new?” It’s: Are you willing to let the old version of you go… to build it better this time? Because in the end: The creator needs courage. The scaler needs structure. But the one who starts again… needs detachment. And perhaps that’s the most underrated skill in entrepreneurship. Not consciousness, but something close enough to demand responsibility. Today, data is the new narrative, and AI is its interpreter. 🔴Which raises a question most organizations are still politely avoiding: If your systems are beginning to "think," have you examined the quality of your own thinking? - Because AI doesn't introduce chaos. Another invents its own traffic rules. A third decides streetlights are optional. By the time the city is "innovative," nobody can move. I keep seeing the same pattern across industries. ⭕ In a hospital, the surgeon should not be worrying about sterilization protocols from scratch. ⭕In a restaurant, the chef should not be redesigning the gas pipeline before serving dinner. ⭕In aviation, pilots are not admired for inventing air traffic control on the fly. The best systems in the world work because the foundation is boring, reliable, invisible, and shared. Technology should be no different. Yet in multi-cloud environments, many organizations confuse freedom with fragmentation. Every team picks its own tooling, security approach, observability stack, deployment rituals, and policy logic. For a while, it feels agile. Then the bill arrives in the form of delays, outages, duplicated effort, compliance drag, and exhausted engineers. The answer is not to standardize innovation. It is to standardize everything so that innovation does not have to think about it. 🔺 Identity. 🔺 Secrets. 🔺 Observability. 🔺 Policy. 🔺 CI/CD. 🔺 Cost guardrails. That is not control for the sake of control. That is operational empathy. The real job of a platform team is not to slow builders down. It is to eliminate the need for every builder to become a plumber, an electrician, and a traffic cop before they can create value. Across niches, roles, and business models, the pattern is the same: Great performance at the edge only happens when discipline lives at the core. Took the tram, the train, buses - travelled with my family, four suitcases, bags, everything - entirely through public transport. No car. No driver. No chaos. And somewhere in the middle of all that, I noticed a person in a wheelchair boarding a train. Alone. No one rushed to help. No one needed to - because the system was designed so that help wasn't required. Just a person, going somewhere, like anyone else. Blind individuals navigating stations independently. Elderly people in their 80s taking public buses, tracking their routes, moving through the city. Not because they were exceptionally capable. But because the infrastructure assumed they had every right to be there. I came back, and I couldn't stop thinking about it. The right to life with dignity is in our Constitution. It's well established. We cite it in courts regularly. But a person in a wheelchair in most Indian cities cannot travel alone on public transport. They need someone. They depend on someone. And that dependency - when it's forced, not chosen - is its own kind of indignity. 78 years of independence. And we still haven't figured out that a clean, accessible toilet at a bus stand is not a luxury. That a ramp at a railway station is not optional. That the test of how developed a society is - is not its GDP or its infrastructure projects - it's whether the most vulnerable person in it can move through it freely. I'm not saying this to compare or criticise. I notice good things everywhere I travel. But some things you see, and you can't unfocus from them.

Technical expertise, communication, leadership, problem-solving. They are all important. However, one capability influences all of them. 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The ability to manage your emotions before they manage you. Some common workplace challenges are: • A conversation that escalates. • A disagreement that turns personal. • An employee struggling under pressure. • A leader whose reactions create uncertainty for the team. Many of these challenges are not around skills. They are 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 challenges. If only we can learn to pause before reacting • To recognize frustration without being controlled by it. • To navigate conflict without escalating it. • To respond intentionally rather than impulsively. A question worth reflecting on: 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴? Technical skills may open doors. Akhilesh S. liked thisAkhilesh S. liked thisSelf-Healing Systems: The Next Evolution of AI Engineering If your AI-generated platform requires a human engineer at 2:00 AM to restart a crashed process, it isn't intelligent. It is merely automated. And if that engineer happens to be you, then congratulations — you've successfully automated the process of ruining your own sleep. Most AI discussions today revolve around writing code faster, generating cleaner architectures, or producing beautifully documented systems. That's great! Unfortunately, production environments have a long-standing tradition of ignoring beautifully documented systems. - Software does not fail when it is being written. - Software fails at 2:00 AM. - When traffic suddenly spikes. - When a user discovers a path nobody anticipated. - Or when someone on the internet decides your application is today's chosen hobby! The real challenge is no longer generating software. The challenge is building systems that survive reality. In my view, every serious AI-enabled platform should eventually evolve towards five capabilities: • Monitor itself • Detect anomalies • Debug root causes • Heal when possible • Escalate when necessary Notice that none of these involve asking an LLM to write another API endpoint. These are operational problems. And operational problems are where systems earn their salary. - We need to stop thinking about AI as a coding assistant. - We need to start thinking about AI as an operational engineer. - A future self-healing platform will not simply tell us that something broke. - It will identify the issue, classify the risk, investigate likely causes, propose corrective actions, apply safe fixes automatically, and involve human engineers only when necessary. Preferably before those engineers have started dreaming about being on a beach somewhere. That requires much more than code generation. It requires context: business context, operational context, failure context, user behavior context. We often invite AI into coding discussions. We rarely invite AI into post-mortem discussions. That may be where the biggest opportunity lies. Writing software with AI is not the same as engineering a business with AI. The latter requires understanding real users, real traffic patterns, real failures, and the consequences of getting things wrong. "We have spent the last two years teaching AI to write code. Akhilesh S. liked thisAkhilesh S. liked thisIn 2005, I quoted ₹20,000 for a matter outside Jaipur. I genuinely thought it would finish in three or four hearings… It didn’t. The matter continued till 2013… Date after date, travel after travel, ticket after ticket. By the end, my travel cost alone had crossed ₹1 lakh. The in the end, the fee remained ₹20,000… Commercially, it was a loss but I had given my word to the client. And sometimes in law, that word becomes more important than the money involved. I still remember continuing that matter knowing the numbers made no sense. But reputation is built in such uncomfortable places. When you are tired.. when the file feels endless... when walking away would be easier when no one would even know what it cost you That case taught me something I still value, But once you commit, stand by it. Because in this profession, clients may forget the exact fee but they rarely forget whether you stood with them till the end.
