Our practice connects communities and is committed to the stewardship of place, people, and the environment.
About us
With our origins in Oregon, attention to craft and beauty is elemental to the ZGF culture. A deep respect for the built environment evolved from reverence for the surrounding natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest landscape and a commitment to stewardship of the natural environment. Rather than reflecting a signature style, our work is derived from the particulars of the climate, context, and the human experience. The instinct to build community, making places where people come together for a common purpose, is central to our work. Evolving from a single office with strong regional roots to a firm with seven offices across North America and 750+ staff, ZGF's national reputation was honored with the American Institute of Architects' Architecture Firm Award, recognizing the firm’s “high standards, humanistic concerns, and unique ability to capture the spirit of a place and the aspirations of its inhabitants.”

The future is mass timber. This week, Metropolis Magazine recognized two ZGF projects that are shaping the next generation of mass timber design: Portland International Airport (PDX) and the PAE Living Building. It’s exciting to see continued momentum around the role mass timber can play in advancing building performance and sustainability. We're proud to be leading projects across the country that are realizing a mass timber future through thoughtful implementation, rigorous wood sourcing and evaluation, and a commitment to lasting change. https://bit.ly/4s5ttct

For more than 40 years, ZGF and OMSI have worked together to shape its evolving presence along Portland's Willamette River. The OMSI Central City Master Plan envisions a vibrant, mixed-use future that connects science, culture, housing, and community across 34 acres in Portland’s Central Eastside. A centerpiece of the plan is the Waterfront Education Park, which will preserve and enhance scenic viewpoints, restore riparian and shallow water habitats, and create spaces for education and interpretation. Responding to existing context, the plan introduces 1200 new homes, including affordable options, two distinct gateways, a central pedestrian spine, east-west connections, and gathering spaces that honor place and community. Throughout the planning process, ZGF collaborated with OMSI and its partners—including Portland Community College, Portland Opera, Portland General Electric, TriMet, and the City of Portland—to create a framework for innovation in climate solutions, transportation, and next-generation urban systems. A key reality shaping healthcare design in 2026: making smarter use of what already exists. "Rather than defaulting to costly new construction, leaders will focus on optimizing current facilities through smarter space utilization, targeted renovations, and incremental infrastructure upgrades that extend the life and efficiency of assets already in place," says ZGF Partner Solvei Neiger, AIA, ACHA.
Healthcare Design’s 2026 Healthcare Design Industry Predictions series continues with Solvei Neiger, AIA, ACHA, partner, ZGF Architects LLP (Portland, Ore.). Here, Neiger discusses some of the opportunities and challenges she sees for 2026, including rethinking where and how care is delivered, with facility design evolving to support shifting demographic needs: https://hubs.ly/Q040LbvJ0

Cost is often a key question when evaluating mass timber alongside more conventional building systems. From price to performance, ZGF’s Vladimir Pajkic shares how the team approached the idea of using mass timber for the Jen-Hsun Huang and Lori Mills Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex at Oregon State University. Once complete, the 143,000 SF facility will be the first all-mass-timber lab in the US to meet rigorous vibration criteria for experimental research labs and will house one of the nation’s most advanced supercomputers. 🎥 Oregon Mass Timber Coalition
