The UNC Suicide Prevention Institute has partnered with counselor educator Dr. Rodney Harris and barber Reggie Winston to help prevent suicide in North Carolina, particularly in the Black community. Research shows that suicide is a leading cause of death for Black or African Americans ages 10 to 24. Barbers in the program are trained how to recognize the signs of suicide in their clients and facilitate a warm hand-off to a mental health professional who can help.

Women are increasingly talking about their experiences with postpartum depression, which affects 1 in 7 new moms. Now there’s a growing understanding that male partners also can have mood changes after a baby’s birth.
