The culinary team peer group recently gathered for two days that combined strategy, learning, and a little friendly competition, and it went well beyond the kitchen. The days centered on two things we care deeply about: 🌱 Sustainable sourcing. We're working to grow our sustainable sourcing across the Kendal system, currently at 10% and climbing. The team met with our strategic sustainability partners to talk through how to get there, including partnering with farmers and ranchers who use regenerative practices and cutting back on herbicides and pesticides. 🍎 Food as medicine. We learned from culinary medicine experts about a new certification that connects nutrition to real health outcomes, from how healthy soil creates more nutrient dense food to how a Mediterranean style diet can support long term brain health. And then the fun part: five culinary teams cooked up their best dishes, and a panel of judges, including Entegra Chefs and TKC leadership, picked their favorites. Congratulations to Executive Chef Eddy Dias from Kendal on Hudson and Director of Culinary Jennifer Hickey from Kendal at Lexington on winning this year's Kendal Wooden Spoon cooking competition. This year's focus was sustainable vegetarian cooking techniques, and their Korean-style eggplant steak with vegetable udon noodle pad Thai, garnished with pomegranate and toasted cashews, took the top spot. Second and third place also brought incredible flavor to the table with dishes built around fresh vegetables and bold spices. At Kendal, we believe what's on the plate matters just as much as what's on the calendar. Honoring the Life and Legacy of Jodi Wallman Leeser. We were saddened to learn of Jodi Wallman Leeser's recent passing, and we want to honor her life and legacy. We are deeply grateful for her service on the Board of Trustees at The Kendal Corporation since January 2022, and for over 15 years of dedication to Quaker governance and community. During her time at Kendal, Jodi served her second term on the Board of Trustees. She served as Secretary and most recently served on the Governance Committee. She brought a keen eye for detail, making sure documents were aligned and language stayed consistent. She raised thoughtful questions with Kendal's best interest at the heart of every one, always wanting the best for Kendal and its mission. Jodi brought a joyful smile and a wonderful sense of humor to everyone she met. She led with a steady, compassionate presence and a deep generosity of love for the people around her. Her commitment to integrity, community, and continuing revelation shaped how she showed up, whether at Kendal, with Quaker schools, or as Treasurer of the Trustees of Byberry Monthly Meeting since 2012. She carried a deep sense of gratitude that she shared freely with everyone she encountered. We are grateful to Jodi for her thoughtful leadership and lasting commitment to the causes she loved, and we thank her family for sharing her with us. Her presence and her spirit will be deeply missed. Memorial gifts in Jodi's honor can be made to the Jodi Wallman Leeser Memorial Endowed Fund at Sandy Spring Friends School.
