Fishing in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence presents real challenges: limited visibility, shifting gear, and busy waters. To help address these risks, Publix Super Markets funded Smart Buoys for three Cape Breton harvesters. The Blue Ocean Gear buoys clip onto existing floats and stream live locations to onboard navigation — reducing time searching for their crab traps and lowering the potential for whale entanglements when traps go missing or displaced. Practical, proven, and immediately useful, this technology supports safer operations and healthier oceans. Thanks to Marc LeFort for the photo.
