In every final interview I conduct, I’m looking for one thing: Was this person born to do this? Technical skills and experience are important. Culture fit matters. But when someone is operating in their natural gift, they bring energy, resilience, and a level of commitment you can’t train. Hire people for what they were made to do, and you don’t just get great work — you get people who love what they do. What’s the #1 quality you look for when hiring?

It must be Chris Do Monday. In our conversation, Chris dropped a line that hit me hard: “Stop caring about outcomes and start caring about the quality of the person that you are. Keep building and investing in you — the rest will take care of itself.” In my 20s, I didn’t do that. I chased results instead of growth, thinking the next win would solve everything. It wasn’t until my mid-30s that I realized becoming the kind of person who can create success is far more important than chasing success itself. If you’re in that phase right now — whether you’re 20, 40, or 60 — take the shortcut. Invest in yourself first. The outcomes will follow.
