  • Behind every great game is the technology that made it possible. 🎮 In this latest Mimms unboxing, Lonnie Mimms takes a look at a Nintendo development computer for "Project Dolphin", also known as the GameCube. This was the kind of hardware programmers used to build and test games before they made it to your console. This system is one of many game development boxes in Mimms collection, offering a look at the technology and engineering behind some of gaming’s most iconic titles. Your favorite Nintendo game could have been developed on a box like this.

  • Some museum artifacts have quite the travel stories. 🚛💻 Did you know Mimms’ CRAY-2 supercomputer made a 580-mile journey from Virginia to Roswell before becoming part of our Supercomputing exhibit? Originally used by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration at NASA Langley Research Center to simulate flight for hundreds of research aircraft, the CRAY-2 was the fastest and most powerful supercomputer on the market when it launched in 1985. Today, it offers a fascinating look at just how far computing technology has come. And yes, an iPad 2 eventually matched its performance on a benchmark. A pretty incredible piece of computing history to have right here at Mimms. Check out our blog post on this journey here: https://bit.ly/4dka6ap

  • We had a great time welcoming homeschool families to Mimms Museum for Homeschool Day! 🔍 Students spent the morning exploring the museum through hands-on activity stations, guided discussions and plenty of questions. Along the way, they connected science, technology, engineering and history to the real-world innovations on display throughout the museum. Thank you to all the families who joined us! We loved seeing young learners engage with technology in such a hands-on way. 💡

  • It’s 1984. You’ve just survived a long day at work. What are you doing to decompress? 🎮 Maybe you’re firing up The Oregon Trail on an Apple II. Maybe you’re heading for the arcade to play some Pac-Man. For National Video Game Day, we’re looking at two very different pieces of gaming history featured at Mimms. The Oregon Trail brought storytelling and decision-making to early home computers, while Atari helped push video games into the mainstream. Different era. Different games. Same basic mission: clock out, power up, and play. So… Oregon Trail or Pacman? 👇

  • We were thrilled to welcome Ken from Computer Clan back to Mimms Museum! 💻 Ken first visited us for an exclusive media night preview of our iNSPIRE exhibition, giving him an early look at what was to come. This time, he returned to see iNSPIRE fully finished and experience the exhibition in its entirety. During his visit, Ken filmed another video for the Computer Clan YouTube channel, exploring the technology and stories featured throughout the exhibition. We’re always excited to share the museum and its collection with creators who are passionate about preserving and exploring computing history. Thank you, Ken, for visiting us again and helping introduce even more people to the stories behind the technology that shaped our world! We can’t wait for everyone to see what he captured. 👀 Check out the Computer Clan YouTube channel here: https://bit.ly/3UXXSOn

Great technology doesn't just change industries. It shapes culture. The Collections Corridor in "iNSPIRE: 50 Years of Innovation from Apple" explores how innovation extends far beyond the products themselves. By highlighting the communities, experiences and cultural moments that grew alongside the evolution of Apple, this part of the exhibition invites visitors to consider how brands foster connection, inspire loyalty, and become part of people's identities. Through interactive experiences and thoughtfully curated artifacts, the gallery demonstrates that some of the most enduring innovations are the ones that create a sense of belonging.

What does it take to preserve the history of technology while inspiring the innovators of tomorrow? In a recent feature for Hypepotamus, Maija Ehlinger takes readers inside Mimms Museum of Technology and Art to explore how its collection is preserving the stories, ideas and people behind some of the most significant moments in tech history. Early Apple artifacts, original documents, space exploration technology, supercomputers and the evolution of personal technology all help tell a larger story about the creativity, risk-taking, collaboration and perseverance behind innovation. Located in Roswell, at the heart of the "Silicon Valley of the South," Mimms Museum is helping connect the technology of yesterday with the possibilities of tomorrow.
