In a typical week, we are asked to complete surveys on everything: our most recent restaurant experience, our interaction with an airline’s customer service department, and our recollection of our last online purchase, to name just a few. Surveys are ubiquitous. Not surprisingly, many people hold strong opinions about their proper usage in applied research generally and in UX research specifically. Surveys aren’t going anywhere because they are an easy way to collect input from many people quickly. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be improved. Improvement starts with a good foundation of survey history and terminology. #ux #userexperience #uxr #usertesting #uxresearch #MeasuringU #MUiQ

We’re proud to celebrate a special milestone for both UXPA International and MeasuringU! In the 25th Anniversary Issue of UX Magazine, our founder and CEO, Jeff Sauro, and Distinguished User Experience Researcher, Jim Lewis, share their article, “Thoughts About the Future of Usability Testing.” Drawing on decades of research and practice, Jeff and Jim explore how usability testing continues to evolve and where emerging technologies, including AI, may shape the future while reinforcing the enduring importance of understanding real human behavior. Congratulations to Jeff and Jim on being featured in this commemorative issue and for their continued contributions to advancing the UX profession. #UX #UXResearch #UsabilityTesting #UserExperience #UXPA2026 #MeasuringU

How do we know if a digital twin is a type of synthetic user? How do we know that a stork is a bird? We develop a taxonomy. Our initial taxonomy of synthetic users lists five types in order of their grounding in real user data. In this article, we provide a preliminary take on the relationship among various types of AI-generated models that can act as participants in UX and other research. #ux #userexperience #uxresearch #uxr #usertesting #MeasuringU #MUiQ

Help us give a warm welcome to our 2026 Summer Interns, Ash and Lena! Ashleigh Salazar Lena Plabst This summer, they’ll be diving headfirst into the world of user experience research here at MeasuringU. Our internship program is designed to bridge the gap between academic methodology and real-world product impact. Over the next few months, they will get hands-on experience with everything from user interviews and usability testing to data synthesis and reporting, all while bringing fresh perspectives to our mission of uncovering deep insights and advocating for users. We’re so excited to collaborate with them and watch them grow as mixed-methods researchers. Please join us in welcoming them to the team in the comments below! #ux #userexperience #uxresearch #usertesting #uxr #MeasuringU #MUiQ

Getting through a PhD program requires certain skills and the ability to meet certain demands, but is that the same as experience working as an industrial UX researcher? #ux #userexperience #uxresearch #uxr #usertesting #MeasuringU #MUiQ

People spend a lot of money (and time) on online purchases, most of that on what we call mass merchant retail websites. The US Census Bureau estimates Q3 2025 retail e-commerce sales were $310B (15.8% of total retail sales that quarter). Spending continues to grow but is tempered by inflation, making shoppers more economically pessimistic and price-sensitive, and less tolerant of extra fees. In general, when purchase volume is high, competition tends to be strong and margins thin. To stand out, providers need to provide online experiences that are reliable, frictionless, and high in perceived value. To understand the quality of their online experiences, in December 2025 we collected UX benchmark metrics on seven popular mass merchant websites and mobile apps. #ux #userexperience #uxr #userexperience #usertesting #MeasuringU #MUiQ

We’ve written a lot about the “magic number 5” for usability testing – when it works and when it doesn’t. But what about the even older and more pervasive sample size guideline that n should be at least 30? #ux #userexperience #uxr #usertesting #uxresearch #MeasuringU #MUiQ

Two proportions can be independent (e.g., the proportion of online banking users under 40 years old versus those over 40) or dependent (e.g., comparison of the proportions of US citizens over the age of 50 who use online banking versus usage under the age of 50). For comparison of two dependent proportions, the correct method is the McNemar exact test. #ux #userexperience #uxr #usertesting #uxresearch #MeasuringU #MUiQ
