“For nearly three decades, Scott Shafer has asked tough questions, held those in power to account, and told the story of California. Scott represents the best of journalism — tough and thoughtful — and San Francisco, and the entire state, is better for his work.” -- Governor Gavin Newsom

For my latest column for K Onda from KQED, I wanted to explore what it would mean for California to elect a Latino governor for the first time. So, I turned to some sharp thinkers, Christian Arana, Sonja Diaz and Cristina Mora, to help me put this historic election into context. The upcoming gubernatorial election in California has been characterized as “quiet” and “sleepy” because the frontrunner, Xavier Becerra, has a very high chance of winning. But for Latines, this election is slated to be one of the most historic and monumental elections ever: The largest state in the nation with the largest Latine population is about to elect a Latino governor for the first time. Becerra’s election is a big deal. “Having someone in this highest office signals a potential turning point, a potential watershed moment, for which the future will tell whether this is a one-time thing or whether this opens the door for many more folks,” said G. Cristina Mora, sociology professor and co-director of the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. “The historical significance, the symbolism of it is incredibly important.” ...

Voting has begun in California and we have a new KQED Voter Guide to help make decision-making and the process easier! Proud of my KQED colleagues in the newsroom and product teams for their tireless work over several months to produce what I believe is the best voter guide in the region. Our team has the top races — both local and statewide — covered, and this year, we challenged ourselves further by going all in on local school board races. We reached out to the 400 candidates running in school board races in the 9 Bay Area counties to get their position on education issues important to the public, such as cell phones in classrooms, law enforcement officers on campus and school closures. Make your voice heard and learn about the issues and candidates. Go check it out at kqed.org/voterguide!

A healthy public media system supports a healthy democracy. Join PBS President & CEO Paula Kerger and KQED President & CEO Michael Isip at the Commonwealth Club World Affairs on November 9 for a conversation about the challenges brought about by sweeping technology and audience changes and defunding, and how the system and local stations are working together to become stronger. https://lnkd.in/gj-Equif

Public media is under pressure like never before. Federal rescissions, a tougher media landscape, and audiences who live in a dozen places at once. So on November 9, I'm sitting down with Paula Kerger President and CEO of PBS, at Commonwealth Club World Affairs for an honest conversation about what's next. How do PBS and stations like KQED stay true to our public service mission, and keep earning your trust, when so much is working against us? I'm grateful that Michael D. B., dean of UC Berkeley Journalism, will moderate. I'd love to see you there. https://lnkd.in/gpi3Vupg

San Francisco Fire Department Chief Dean Crispen, who was part of the relief efforts at Ground Zero, looks back on 25 years since 9/11 with KQED morning host Brian Watt. "9/11 put a punctuation mark on the collective sacrifice that is made by firefighters, paramedics and EMTs throughout the country. We’re all in this together, and we need to be supportive of each other." https://lnkd.in/gp4bZMmP

A HUGE congratulations to my culinary KQED teammates who took home a 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗘𝗺𝗺𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 for 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘬, 𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦! 𝘉𝘢𝘺 𝘈𝘳𝘦𝘢! 🏆 The award was presented at the 55th Annual Awards event, honoring the program in the Talk Show – Short or Long Form category for a special episode celebrating the show's 20th anniversary. Making this one particularly special was the Golden State Warriors connection bringing together Festus Ezeli, Trayce Jackson-Davis, and myself to celebrate food, community, and two decades of one of the regions most beloved programs. And as someone who has spent much of my career around Bay Area food, storytelling, and the Warriors, it was pretty special to see all of those worlds come together for such a memorable episode. 👏 Congratulations to: Leslie Sbrocco - Host Lori Halloran - Series Producer Cecilia Phillips - Coordinating Producer/Reporter Candice Yung - Associate Producer Peter Ruocco - Photographer Scott Stoneback - Photographer Christopher Schultz & Aaron Drury - Editors Henry Rubin - Studio Director Rick Santangelo - Technical Director This award is a reflection of the creativity, collaboration and incredible work happening behind the scenes. Bravo!
