Our #OSSEU Standards & Specifications Forum may have wrapped, but the conversations are still going strong. This morning, the OpenChain Project hosted a Standards mini-summit workshop, and this afternoon the Open Container Initiative packed the room with talks on open source projects leveraging OCI specifications. 🔥 One of the hottest topics? The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and its related standardization activities. OpenChain, OpenSSF, SPDX SBOM, Confidential Computing Consortium and other communities shared tools and knowledge to help manufacturers and maintainers prepare for CRA requirements. AI was another big focus—highlighting how open standards are fueling growth. With open source tools and solutions accelerating at an exponential rate, standardization is proving to be a key driver of rapid innovation in AI. Just released: The 2025 State of Open Source in Europe report from LF Research and LF Europe is now available. The report finds the European open source ecosystem is in a key transition. While adoption is widespread, organizational maturity is uneven, with many companies using OSS without formal strategies or an OSPO. Key Takeaways The Maturity Gap: Despite acknowledging benefits like increased productivity, direct investment in sustaining OSS projects is low. However, the companies that do invest report strong returns, pointing to untapped potential. A Lever for Sovereignty: Governments and industries increasingly see OSS as essential for digital sovereignty, collaboration, and innovation. Initiatives like Germany’s Sovereign Tech Agency and the EU’s Cyber Resilience Act are actively reshaping security and investment priorities. The Path Forward: Europe’s focus is shifting from passive consumption toward active engagement.
