Updates

  • Corn and wheat futures have climbed to their highest levels in more than three years, but very different forces are driving the rallies. Barchart’s William Osnato, CFA, Director of Commodity Data Research & Analysis, spoke with CNBC about what’s behind the moves, from shifting expectations around U.S. corn supplies and recent Crop Tour findings to weather challenges and disruptions to wheat exports through the Black Sea. As Will explains, changing supply expectations are playing a major role in the market, while multi-year highs are also drawing increased interest from momentum and systematic traders. • Drought conditions are putting U.S. cotton production under pressure. Dry weather across key growing regions is weighing on crop conditions, while Barchart’s county-level cotton yield forecasts are highlighting where production risks are emerging. USDA has also lowered its U.S. average yield estimate to 798 pounds per harvested acre, down 8.5% from its July estimate. With little rain expected across West Texas in the weeks ahead, declining yield expectations could have implications across the cotton supply chain, from textile mills to consumer apparel prices. • We launched a new dataset delivering daily U.S. upland cotton yield forecasts at the county level. Built to target USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA) yields, the model combines satellite data, ground observations, and machine learning to identify downside yield risk earlier, helping commodity professionals anticipate potential supply constraints before they are reflected in government estimates or futures markets. Coverage spans 12 major cotton-producing states, with county-level forecasts aggregated to the state level and updated daily throughout the growing season. The data is available now through cmdtyView, Excel, API, SFTP and S3. Contact our team here to get started: https://lnkd.in/gfid2qv
