Creating a safer world through the prevention of infection.

About us

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) is the leading professional association for infection preventionists (IPs) with more than 15,000 members. Our mission is to create a safer world through the prevention of infection. This is achieved by the provision of better care to promote better health at a lower cost. Many IPs are employed within healthcare institutions and also serve as educators, researchers, consultants, and clinical scientists. The majority of APIC members are affiliated with acute care settings. An increasing number practice in ambulatory and outpatient services where they direct programs that protect patients and personnel from HAIs. Members are also involved in long-term care, home health, and other practice settings where infection prevention and control is an increasing area of responsibility for nurses and other healthcare personnel.

Infection preventionists are often asked to advise on surgical irrigation practices as they relate to the reduction of SSI, yet practice varies across organizations and clinical settings. The APIC Center for Research, Practice, and Innovation (CRPI) has released a new evidence-based resource, An Overview of Surgical Irrigation Evidence-Based Guidelines for Reducing Risk of Surgical Site Infections, synthesizing information and recommendations from the CDC, WHO, SHEA/IDSA, AORN, ISMP, USP, and the FDA. This guidance distills current evidence into practical considerations for infection prevention practice, including SBAR communication tools to support safer decision-making. Read the full guidance and explore how it can support SSI prevention in your organization. https://hubs.li/Q044jkmg0
