A proof load test is designed to find problems before they fail in service. But the test itself carries risk. Common failure points include: 🔹 Material defects like cracks, weld flaws, and permanent deformation 🔹 Loose, stripped, or mismatched fasteners and connections 🔹 Worn hooks, shackles, and rigging that no longer match their rating 🔹 Weak anchorage, supports, or misaligned loading And if the force-measuring equipment has drifted, an item can pass without ever being loaded to the required proof load. Infrared thermometers are easy to use and easy to misread. Point, pull the trigger, and you get a clean number. But two different problems can sit behind it: 🔹 Drift: the instrument slowly moves away from the true temperature as the detector, optics, and electronics age. 🔹 Measurement error: emissivity, reflected heat, distance, and ambient conditions skew the reading even when the instrument is perfectly calibrated. Knowing which one you’re dealing with is the first step toward trusting your readings. Drift is caught with as-found data and multi-point calibration. Emissivity and environment are handled with consistent technique. A humidity sensor can show a stable, believable reading for years while its accuracy quietly erodes. Most sensors measure humidity indirectly, so anything that changes the sensing element, from aging polymers to contamination and condensation, changes the reading without any visible sign of failure. We break down how aging and environment cause humidity sensors to drift, why the drift is often uneven across the range (so a single-point check can miss it), and how multi-point calibration and as-found data catch it early. A multimeter that powers on, displays a stable reading, and passes a quick visual check can still be measuring incorrectly. Electrical test equipment rarely fails in an obvious way, it drifts quietly, and a unit that "seems fine" can feed inaccurate readings into a process for months before anyone notices. We break down what causes electrical drift (component aging, temperature sensitivity, connector wear, and more), why it stays invisible longer than mechanical failures, and how as-found data catches it before it becomes a safety or compliance issue. Big news for construction materials testing labs: five Accredited Labs brands, Calser, Servo Innovations, Calibration Services Inc., ATSNUC, and Northwest Technical Services, are now united under one name: Cal-Cert. Cal-Cert is the largest CMT calibration provider in the U.S., giving labs one trusted source for nuclear density gauge calibration (including Troxler®), soil and concrete testing equipment, scales, ovens, load frames, and more, all backed by ISO/IEC 17025 accredited, traceable results across the national Accredited Labs network. Same technicians, same local teams, now under one name. Read the full announcement: https://hubs.la/Q04z2dgH0 #CMT #ConstructionMaterialsTesting

A force testing machine that passed its last calibration with room to spare can still be producing questionable results today. Drift doesn't announce itself, it accumulates quietly between calibrations. We break down what causes force measurement drift (mechanical fatigue, overload events, environmental exposure, electronic aging), what it does to test accuracy in the meantime, and how as-found data catches it before it becomes an audit finding. Starting January 1, 2027, "our calibration provider is accredited" won't be enough to satisfy AASHTO R18-26. The 2026 revision (Section 6.9) raises the bar for construction materials testing labs. Quality managers now have to document that they evaluated their calibration provider's qualifications for the specific equipment and work being purchased — not just that the provider holds accreditation in general. That means verifying: → The provider's ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation → Their accredited scope covers your specific equipment type and measurement discipline → Calibration range matches your actual operating range → Methods satisfy the applicable AASHTO or ASTM requirements → Measurement traceability is properly documented AASHTO re:source and CCRL begin enforcing this on January 1, 2027, which makes 2026 your window to get ahead of it. We broke down exactly what quality managers need to know, plus a free checklist for evaluating (and documenting) your calibration providers against these requirements: https://hubs.la/Q04xNhW_0 Contact us with questions about your program. #ConstructionMaterialsTesting #AASHTO #Calibration #QualityManagement #CMT

"Find a calibration company" isn't really the decision. The real choices are in-house vs. third-party, on-site vs. lab, and single accredited provider vs. multiple specialized vendors. We break down the trade-offs behind each option and the questions that help a quality manager or engineering lead land on the right fit for their operation, instead of defaulting to whatever's most familiar.
