About the Cover
Shown is a male zebra finch singing. The artistic depiction of his sound was created using four measures of how a listening bird's brain responds to vocalizations. The top layer features a visual map of rapid rises in sound intensity at the end of syllables over time. The second layer from the top displays neural responses in the listening bird's auditory forebrain. The third layer from the top shows a stacked bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) network in the listening bird's brain. This network measurement is a way of decoding sound features from brain data. The bottom layer shows sound intensities from the song that were decoded from BiLSTM network measures.
