Process
Important Dates and Deadlines
If you’re confident Penn is the best fit for you, consider applying through Early Decision. Our Early Decision program is binding, meaning that if you are admitted, you are required to accept our offer of admission and enroll at Penn.
If you are still unsure if Penn is the right choice for you, or if you want the ability to compare financial aid packages across all schools to which you are admitted, you should consider applying through the Regular Decision application program.
Financial Aid and Engineering Scholarships
The University of Pennsylvania is committed to affordability and proud to be a need-blind institution. Our financial aid offer meets 100% of our students demonstrated need through grants, scholarships, and on-campus employment opportunities. We don’t include student loans in our aid offer, which means students can graduate debt-free.
Engineering Criteria
Penn applicants are required to submit the SAT or ACT for the 2025-26 application cycle. Applicants who face hardship in meeting this requirement can submit a waiver instead. This applies to all first-year, domestic, international, homeschooled, transfer, and QuestBridge applicants.
Applicants may self-report test scores at the time of their application. We use standardized testing as part of our comprehensive review process to gain more insight into the academic preparation of our applicants. These tests represent only one component in our dynamic admissions process in combination with other academic and non-academic factors.
High School Preparation
While Penn Engineering does not require a specific GPA or number of AB/IB courses, we do consider the following when reviewing a prospective engineering student’s application:
- The ability to innovate, design, and practically apply scientific discoveries
- Expressed reasons for pursuing an engineering education
- A strong preparation in physics and mathematics, particularly calculus
How To Apply
Prospective Penn Engineering undergraduates should apply through the University of Pennsylvania’s Office of Admissions.
Before applying, please become familiar with the relevant requirements for freshmen admission:
- High school documents (transcripts, recommendations, etc.)
- Tests you may need to take (SAT, ACT, TOEFL)
- Penn’s undergraduate admissions timetable, including deadlines for Early Decision and Regular Decision
- AP and Transfer Credit Policies
To apply online:
Submit your application online using the Common Application or the Coalition Application (for undergraduate first year and transfer applicants only). As a part of this application, students must complete a personal essay. Additionally, Penn applicants must complete the Penn Writing Supplement.

Funding your Education
Tuition for master’s students depends on the number of courses they are taking. Doctoral students receive full funding for their program (including tuition and associated fees, single health insurance, single dental insurance and an annual living wage) as long as they remain in good academic standing.
Masters Degree Funding
Penn Engineering does not provide financial assistance for master’s-level students; however, you may be able to find a teaching assistantship or part-time lab position through your academic department. You can also explore student employment opportunities, federal funding (if you’re a U.S. citizen or permanent resident) or through scholarship opportunities.
Doctoral Funding
Penn Engineering offers fellowships to support doctoral students. Eligibility and selection vary based on fellowship.
