Independence Branch Library

A Library Stair with Housing Atop. We teamed up with Landon Bone Baker architects for a co-located branch library and forty-five units of housing. The design takes the steps of a typical civic building and sweeps them through the interior of the building. The public stair is exaggerated and allows for the library to occupy one level, while providing access for parking below. The library acts like a terraced landscape with bookshelf screens between each terrace. The landscape is punctuated by a series of landmark elements that lead you on a journey through the space. The housing above features a reading nook for residents to store and read books.
