AD Vintage Vault: Georgia O’Keeffe’s Enduring Influence
While best known for her modernist New Mexico landscapes and abstract floral renderings, O’Keeffe’s singular interior design style was similarly influenced by the American desert. Her Pueblo-style summer home, Ghost Ranch, and her long-time home in Abiquiú are admired for their traditional adobe architecture: thick, mud-brick walls, deep-set windows, exposed beams. Her influence on interiors crops up regularly in AD, from a Santa Fe fixer-upper to a Santa Barbara Pueblo revival, to her very own iconic pantry.

Emilia Castillo’s Whimsical Silverware
Punch-bowl peering toucans, parrots perched on a pitcher’s rim, butter bell bathing turquoise lizards—these are just a few of Emilia Castillo’s outlandish and ornate approaches to silversmithing. The Mexican artist takes after her father, one of the founders of the famous Los Castillo silversmith workshop in Taxco, incorporating exotic animals in her artwork with a penchant for playful humor. Who else might think to sculpt an ice bucket in the form of an armadillo?

Dorchester’s Bygone Pottery
Recently, on a trip to Maine’s Wiscasset Antique Mall, I was delighted by a milk jug and sugar bowl in cobalt blue and gray, hand-painted with a pattern that looked like tangled fiddleheads. What followed was a deep-dive into a family-run kiln shuttered in 1970, still beloved by collectors for its unique and vibrant catalog.

Clara Porset’s Mexican Modernism
For our first installment of Vintage Vault, we began with Cuban-born designer Clara Porset, whose style of Mexican Modernism we channeled in this selection of clay vessels, woven accents, and mid-century furniture.
