Back Bay Station Improvements

We are making major air quality improvements and renovating the concourse at Back Bay station, which serves 18,000 Orange Line and Commuter Rail riders each day.
Learn about the projects below:
Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
Air Quality Improvements
Work includes:
- Pressurizing 2 stairwells between the track and concourse levels to prevent exhaust fumes from rising to the concourse
- Installing jet fans in the tunnel to draw fresh air to the platform
- Upgrading station infrastructure
Concourse Renovations
Renovations to the Back Bay Concourse will be completed as part of the Back Bay Station Renovation Project, a collaboration between the City of Boston, the MBTA, and the developer, BXP.
The current station has a constrained layout and can be difficult to navigate. Additionally, the station is in need of updated electrical systems and architectural features. The project will restore the station's architecture, improve pedestrian flow, update electrical systems, add retail opportunities, and relocate and enhance MBTA booths.
Rider Benefits
- Better pedestrian flow and navigation
- New lighting and audio equipment to improve and modernize the station’s interior
- Improved signage and wayfinding
- Modified Orange Line fare gates to make it easier for people to enter and exit
- New retail opportunities for the community
- New and expanded areas for passengers waiting for trains on the concourse level;
Project Stages
Construction on the Back Bay Concourse Station Renovation project will be completed in phases and is expected to last through spring 2027.
In this pre-construction phase, crews will establish work zones, build electrical infrastructure, and deliver steel. Crews will also construct a new bike cage outside at the Clarendon Street entrance of the station.
Crews will reconstruct the center and east side of the station concourse and exterior structure adjacent to Clarendon Street.
Crews will reconstruct the west side of the station concourse and exterior structure adjacent to Dartmouth Street.
