Costello played three years at St. Michael’s College in Toronto before being drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks. He spent time with Chicago as well as the AHL’s Hershey Bears. Later he was traded to the Boston Bruins before playing in the Detroit organization and finishing his career with the Edmonton Flyers of the WHL. In all, his NHL career spanned 162 regular season games and five playoffs.
Costello received a BA from the University in 1959, before moving to Ottawa to pursue a degree in law, after which he moved to the business side of hockey. An executive with the Seattle Totems, Murray guided the team to back-to-back championships in ’67 and ’68.
One of his greatest accomplishments was a 20 year span as President of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, now Hockey Canada, where he made significant contributions to the merging of Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey Association. Murray oversaw the formation of the Canadian women’s team and the rapid development of women’s hockey.
In 2005, Costello was the 93rd person to be inducted as a Builder in the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame.
