Spatial epidemiology of NTDs
GAHI maps are based on careful data assembly and rigorous spatial analysis. -
Optimising surveillance and monitoring & evaluation strategies
Once control has been implemented, a key question is: how do we best track changes in infection levels over time? -
Understanding the context of control
Better appreciation of contextual factors is crucial to achieving effective control -
Evaluating school-based interventions
School-aged children are most at risk of helminth infections. -
Developing tools
An important goal for GAHI is capacity building to better target deworming efforts.

Worms
-
What are they?
Parasitic worms (helminths) can be found in the human intestinal tract, urinary tract or bloodstream.
-
Global burden
The Global Burden of Disease study estimates the magnitude of health loss due to diseases and injuries.
-
How do they spread?
Infection with STH and schistosomiasis is associated with inadequate sanitation and hygiene, while LF is transmitted by mosquitoes.
-
Control & elimination
Commitment to NTD control has increased in recent years, including periodic deworming campaigns with safe, cheap drugs.
-
How are they diagnosed?
Reliable and sensitive diagnostic tests are essential for all NTD control programmes, including those for worms.
-
Geotargeting
Geographical targeting of interventions is required to ensure programmes are implemented appropriately, focusing resources on areas of greatest need.
