We quickly became competitive and managed to keep our streaks going and even through the birth of our son. He has heard the familiar Duolingo dings since before he was born, and seven months later, he is very much used to them. Now, those dings have taken on a new meaning. After 12 years in mobile games, I’m starting a new chapter as a Senior Software Engineer at Duolingo in London. Last week, I travelled to Duolingo’s headquarters in Pittsburgh for onboarding, where I had the chance to meet the wider team. I came away clearer than ever that I’m in the right place. I’ve always enjoyed learning beyond the boundaries of a classroom. Much of my own education in game development took place outside a traditional institution, and in my new role, I’ll be helping make learning more accessible to people around the world. Also met Lily, who was exactly as enthusiastic about it as expected.

Simon Hade reposted thisSimon Hade reposted thisDuolingo Math is a long-term bet for us. Every kid has to learn math, but many find it intimidating. Our goal is to make it feel more approachable. This back-to-school season, we've expanded our 2nd to 12th grade math content, and we're shipping three things that make it easier to help kids when they get stuck: 1. Math Coach: Eddy (one of our characters) explains new math concepts, and students can ask him any questions they have. 2. In-Lesson Support: Students can get targeted help in an exercise without leaving the lesson. 3. Multistep Problems: Students get step-by-step problem solving guidance to build the skills and confidence needed for independent practice. For many families, math is probably the subject that gets the tears and the closed doors. I’m hoping we can make it a little less of that this school year.

Simon Hade reposted thisSimon Hade reposted thisIf you’ve read any studies over the last few years about kids and math, there’s a good chance they left you feeling a little sad. TL;DR: in the last decade, compounded by the pandemic, student math scores are at all-time lows. As a parent, this is worrying because we all know that math literacy is foundational to any kid’s ability to reason and think critically about the world around them (at a time when, arguably, critical thinking is the most important skill your kid should build!). At Duolingo, we’ve been improving our free math course. We’ve made it better align with the work kids are learning in school, have added thousands of new exercises and new content to teach almost the entire US Common Core curriculum, and are continuing to make it fun and engaging in the way that only we can with new ways of teaching. We ran our first efficacy study over the summer and saw that as little as five minutes a day using Duolingo Math will: 〰️ improve kids' math confidence, 〰️ make them feel better prepared for their upcoming math classes, 〰️ and improve their tests scores. Turns out a little extra time goes a very long way. We’re still early on our path to making every kid a math whiz, but this felt like a great milestone to share and tell you to GET YOUR KIDS USING DUOLINGO MATH ALREADY. #duolingocreator #productmanagement

Simon Hade liked thisSimon Hade liked thisLast month, I wrapped up my time leading growth at Duolingo. It's hard to describe how fulfilling, interesting and hilarious the last two years have been. I have such a deep gratitude for the product, the people and above all, the mission of Duolingo. I don't think I've ever smiled and laughed so much at a job. I'm crazy proud of the work we led—redesigning our core tabs, pushing the brand and interaction of the streak, building iconic partnerships with the companies we admired, and inventing new frontiers for product, motion and brand design. Thank you to Mig Reyes, Ryan Sims, Luis von Ahn for taking a chance on me and making work feel like play. Thank you to my team and my partners for giving me the "wow" feeling every time we invented something new. I have loved building products with all of you. On to my next adventure! 💚
