I would like to thank two who have had great influence on me on this journey: Alan Morgan, a senior partner at McKinsey & Co. where I began my career, with whom I have remained in touch over the years, and more recently Sir Donald Brydon, Chairman of Tide. I am grateful for the many opportunities the UK has given me and look forward to continuing to make my contribution to British society.

Samson Muhangi liked thisSamson Muhangi liked thisIn 2016 I joined Tide as employee #2. Someone told me a few years later that I was mad to do it as I'd taken near founder-level risk for employee-level equity. Tide is worth over a billion now and I still don't think the equity I got is the reason it was the right call. Three years there taught me more than ten somewhere established would have. I watched a company go from an idea to a real business from the cockpit, including all the parts nobody writes posts about. When I left I had doors open to me that wouldn't have been otherwise. One of them was raising VC money to launch my own thing. The honest maths on early equity is that the expected value is low, because most companies never get there. But the expected value of the education is high and it doesn't depend on the outcome at all if you pick the right team. Every role I've had since has been early stage. I've never worked anywhere at scale and I've stopped pretending that's an accident. I think about it differently now I've been on the other side of the table. The people who join early for the lottery ticket get disappointed on a schedule. The ones who join to learn how the whole thing works tend to stay and enjoy the journey. Some of them leave to go and build their own thing (which is arguably what you want to optimise for when you hire early).

Samson Muhangi liked thisSamson Muhangi liked thisI’ve had some brilliant conversations over the last few weeks, and it’s been really nice coming back into what I call my 'safe network' We’ve covered everything from the woes of life, to absolutely ridiculous AI models, to what’s actually happening across the technology sector right now and the bloody pace of it Some half-hour conversations have turned into a few hours, complete with regular tea breaks. Others have been a whirlwind 20 minutes - all so valuable One thing I’ve realised though… damn, I have a strong tech network! But realistically, my network spans far wider than technology and across a lot of different industries So, as I start stepping a little wider, I’m putting the call out to the marketeers, people people, finance people, operators, founders and everything in between - come and have a chat with me I want to know what’s disrupting your world too. What’s changing? What’s getting harder? What are people getting completely wrong? One caveat: right now, I’m not speaking to recruiters. I have all the love for you lot — Lord knows I’ve put in my shifts — but I’ll be coming to you from a slightly different angle shortly 🤔 As usual, slide into my DMs or drop me an email.
