Ric Moore posted this5 years ago I co-founded Oxalis Games with Gina Nelson. About 18 months ago Gina asked to be co-CEO. She has expressed a desire to run the company on her own, and so I have decided to step down to leave her to it. I'm confident she'll do a great job running the studio. The studio will be focusing on making premium indie PC games (no web3) and releasing Moonfrost on Steam. I'll be focusing on AI driven game development. I'm also still bullish on web3, I think it needs shaking up (watch this space).

It still requires talent. You can give someone a paintbrush but that doesn’t make them a good painter. Same with AI, it’s a tool. You still need to understand what’s going on under the hood. Danny Limanseta churns out good stuff but they look like prototypes rather than full games.

I’ve built something substantial but it’s not been plain sailing. I use Claude Code and Codex to review/audit the code every other day. Btw, I stopped using Cursor after I discovered it’s much cheaper to use Claude Code and Codex directly. Paying for the api via Cursor cost me $1700 in one month. Now it’s a flat $200 with Claude

Ric Moore liked thisRic Moore liked thisMeccha Chameleon: two developers, two months, no marketing budget. 15 million copies sold in under a month. By some estimates, that's over $1M in revenue per day of development time. It joins a small but growing list (Among Us, Stardew Valley, Balatro, etc). These are, by some measures, the best returns in the business. But these companies have two other characteristics: Firstly, they’re virtually unsourceable. No one sees games like Meccha Chameleon coming, because these hits aren't legible until after the fact. There's no signal to underwrite, and even if there were, these labors of love are often made by small teams flying under the radar. "Small team makes something inexplicably compelling" isn’t something you can exactly build a thesis around. Secondly, these games are fragile to capital. The reason titles like Meccha Chameleon work is that constraint forces clarity - two people, two months, one weird idea, no room for anything but the core loop. Fund that team properly, add a producer, a roadmap, a marketing plan, and you often get a worse game. The scrappiness isn't something the game succeeds in spite of – it’s the REASON to the success in the first place. So what does an investor do with that? Giving up on content isn't the answer - these are still the best economics in the industry. But a spray-and-pray approach that tries to fund every 2-person shop out there isn’t the answer either. I don't have a clean answer here. But it feels like these are the questions worth sitting with. Are there signals - or better yet, environments - that select for passion-rich developers before anyone else spots them? Are there structures that balance investment against input, instead of just maximizing the check size? Are there resources beyond capital that swell the scope of a project without diluting what made it work? And how do you keep rewarding the "less is more" instinct that drives not just great games, but great ART? The gaming VC environment is in many ways still recovering from the damage done in the last 5 years. They can start by asking the right questions.

I’m leaving to spend more time with my family — no new role, no new company, and no other plans beyond that. I owe a huge thank you to Ilkka Paananen and the Supercell founders for building such an extraordinary company, and to Janne Snellman for hiring me and betting on me back in 2013. That bet shaped my entire career. I’m deeply grateful for the ride: the people, the games, the deals, and the front-row seat to one of the most remarkable companies in gaming. The team I’m leaving behind is in great shape, and I’m proud of what we built together. What’s next? Time with family. Beyond that, I’ll figure it out. If our paths have crossed over the years — thank you. I’d love to stay in touch.

We've just announced Substructure: a factory automation game created by Dubious Design. Substructure puts you on a rogue alien planet, where you're part of a hastily-prepared expedition team. You must explore the planet and exploit its resources through complex, multi-level production chains that expand deep beneath the planet's surface. We're big fans of the factory genre, and are so thrilled that the Dubious team has trusted us to serve as their publisher for Substructure.

An original match-3 game for iOS. Best described as Tetris meets Diamond Dash. The game was featured in Best New Games on the Appstore. This was a short project made in collaboration with Japanese publisher Marvelous.

We built the mobile version of Stardew Valley for iOS and Android. It was an entire reworking of the game to make the controls and menus work on touch screens of all sizes. It involved extensive rewriting of the code and great simplification and improvement of the UI and UX.
