Ray O'Brien shared thisRay O'Brien shared thisThis is the one where Brian and I got to talk with our friend and former colleague Ray O'Brien, who is now the COO of Quantexa. This was certainly a conversation that we had been looking forward to as Ray is one of those people who always has an interesting story, and can really make you laugh but also make you think! Continuing with our Data theme where Josh Simons helped to set the scene in our "Data is not boring" episode. This time, we delve more into why AI/ML is not new, but how #cloudcomputing has been the gamechanger, allowing the application of AI into areas where it would have been prohibitively expensive. We talked about how knowing the business can be a massive differentiator for IT professionals and we even got a few surprisingly deep answers in the #LightningRound. Above all, we found Ray's thoughts and stories to be very inciteful, and entertaining. For those of you that know Ray, you will know what to expect and he did not disappoint. For those of you that did not know Ray until now, you are in for a good time. Please check out Ray's LinkedIn page where you can find links to other podcasts and how to connect with him. https://lnkd.in/eu_ZdrkJ We look forward to your feedback, and if you would like to join us as a guest on a future episode, please do get in touch. Ray O'Brien liked thisRay O'Brien liked thisThere’s a moment many organizations are in right now. AI ambition is clear. The investment is there. But turning that into consistent, trusted outcomes is still a work in progress. At QuanCon26, Julie Sweet and Vishal Marria reflected on what it really takes to close that gap. The answer is becoming clearer across industries. AI only delivers value when it is grounded in context. Data that captures relationships, meaning, and real-world complexity. Decisioning that is transparent, explainable, and tied to measurable business outcomes. We’re grateful for the partnership with Accenture and the shared commitment to helping organizations scale AI responsibly and with confidence. For leaders navigating this shift, this is a conversation worth revisiting. Ray O'Brien liked thisRay O'Brien liked thisMy last experience of joining a new organisation was as a developer on Halloween 2005, and there's no doubt that 20 years later, my brain is less of a sponge than it used to be! When you work in an organisation for a long time, its easy to underestimate the lift that you get from all that knowledge that you assimilate over the years; How to navigate that awkward process, who to speak to when that breaks and what that ridiculous TLA means. Industry sector, internal function and office interior can be the same but the DNA of the organisation is still very different. Two weeks into my new role at Coventry Building Society, I'm reminded that despite my less spongey grey matter, understanding new DNA is challenging but really fun, especially if you've got a supportive team and leadership around you. Before joining the starting I was challenged by Clare Turner to think about the kind of leader I wanted to be in my new role. Reflecting, I realised how as the complexity of the jobs I was doing grew, I withdrew from the external, industry-facing elements of the technology leaders' role. This is something I'm determined to fix going forward. Being able to carve out time to take up Georgia Woodhams' invitation to attend the AWS Summit was fantastic, highlighting again how deeply and rapidly Agentic AI is disrupting all aspects of the software industry - creating huge opportunities to be harnessed, but also posing fundamental challenges that leaders must understand and tackle. The message from software engineering is stark: As foundation model capabilities continue to evolve at pace, industries that have traditionally relied on knowledge and experience as barriers to entry will need to adapt quickly to this structural shift — while ensuring long-term sustainability

UK banks are set to invest £1.8bn in generative AI by 2030, a move projected to save 187 million labor hours and deliver a 100% ROI on the investment. While this signals a major leap in productivity, the research from Zopa Bank and Juniper Research also highlights that 27,000 banking roles—10% of the UK's workforce—face significant change. This raises critical questions about reskilling and the future of work in finance. Digital-first banks are better positioned, but traditional institutions must adapt to avoid falling behind. #GenAI #FinTech #Banking #FutureOfWork #AIinFinance

I’ve just been reading the latest AI Adoption Research from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, and a few things really stood out to me. - Only 16% of UK businesses are actively using AI. - 80% have no plans to adopt it yet. That genuinely surprised me. With all the noise around AI, you’d think adoption was universal. The reality? We’re still very early in the curve. A few key takeaways: • Productivity gains are real • Revenue impact is still limited (for now) • Ethical concerns are the biggest barrier • Skills and clarity are slowing adoption For me, this reinforces something important: AI adoption isn’t about chasing hype. It’s about clarity of use case, responsible implementation, and measurable value. The businesses that win won’t be the ones who move fastest. They’ll be the ones who move intelligently. AI feels inevitable across every sector. But how we integrate it through oversight, ethics, and intent will determine whether it becomes a lever or a liability. Curious where others are right now: Actively using AI? Experimenting? Or still observing? Systems don’t run companies—people do This was one of the most important lessons I share in "Bluebook", the story of Refinitiv and our transformation of a leading global financial data and analytics business. In Chapter 10, “People are your most valuable asset”, I reflect on managing through the COVID crisis. Like many organisations, we discovered our systems weren’t perfectly designed for the unpredictable, market data volumes and customer needs tripled over night. It was our people who stepped in and made the difference, often under difficult personal circumstances and fear of the unknown for themselves and their families. Looking after colleagues, creating an ownership mindset in the business, shouldn’t be reserved for times of crisis—it’s something we must do every day. Through any transformation, it’s your people, not just your plans, who make it happen. @Sam Brichalk summed this up well in her recent Raconteur article. http://bit.ly/3KvCxHl Fast forward to today: companies are making big assumptions about the power and impact of AI, especially Large Language Models (LLMs). LLMs are advanced artificial intelligence systems trained on vast amounts of text data, enabling them to understand, generate, and summarise human language with remarkable accuracy. While their potential is substantial, financial markets have already priced in $billions of transformational efficiencies and reductions in people and costs. This is, at best, premature—and at worst, misjudged. It shouldn’t take another crisis to remind us, or the next technology transformation: people make organisations run. Let’s not forget the lessons of the past. How is your organisation balancing the incredible but uncertain promise of AI, with the value of your culture and people? Banks are at an inflection point. What began as technology-enabled operations is now evolving into a far bigger shift towards autonomous digital enterprises that can sense, decide and act at speed and scale. Our latest Financial Services paper explores this journey in depth, outlining how banks can move from digitisation to autonomy. It also provides strategic frameworks to guide this transformation as well as governance principles and execution guidelines to enable scale with control. As banks reimagine their operating models, the focus is no longer just on adopting technology—but on embedding intelligence across the enterprise. Are you confident in your data governance ahead of Solvency UK? Reliable, well-governed data is the foundation of effective risk management and regulatory compliance and under Solvency UK, expectations are increasing. To demonstrate clear traceability, accountability and control, financial institutions should begin by asking: - Have we reviewed our data governance framework recently? - Do we have clarity over where our critical data originates? - Is data consistently accurate, complete, and auditable? - Can we track how key data flows through our systems? - Are data ownership roles and responsibilities well defined? - If challenged, could we stand behind our data-driven decisions? A structured data quality review can reveal how resilient your current systems and controls really are and where governance gaps need attention. These are just some of the questions we address in our latest blog, part of our practical Solvency UK readiness framework. How much do Asset and Wealth Management IT leaders really trust their data? The results from talking to 160 UK-based CIOs and CTOs are in. Download the report to discover what's holding back confidence in your data and how to build more trust in it. Our data expert, Henry Brown, shares his thoughts in the report, advising firms to: "Understand data and the quality of that data, and make sure it accurately reflects the real-world scenario it is trying to describe. Then, understand the materiality of the recommendations suggested by an analytical model. Doing this enables firms to adopt a risk-appropriate framework for using data to drive better insights". You'll find lots more insights and advice for CIOs and senior data leaders - find the link to the report in the comments 👇

🛡️Blind #Quantum Computing #Oxford physicists have unveiled a new “blind quantum computing” breakthrough, allowing users to securely and privately run quantum computations over the cloud! This could mean that quantum computing becomes a home or office reality sooner than we think. Would you trust cloud-based quantum computers with your data? This method enables individuals or businesses to process confidential data and verify results on remote quantum servers without revealing any sensitive information, potentially making quantum computing accessible and secure for millions. 🔑 Key Points: - The technique connects a quantum server to a simple photon-detecting device over a fiber network, allowing for secure, real-time quantum computations between remote parties. - Blind quantum computing ensures that private data, code, and results remain hidden from the quantum server itself, addressing major privacy and security concerns as quantum computing is commercialized. - The Oxford group’s solution allows users not only to keep their algorithms and data private but also to verify if the returned results are authentic and unaltered—an essential feature for trust in cloud-based quantum computing. 🚨Why this is important: This innovative approach addresses two major barriers to widespread quantum computing adoption: the need for secure, private use of remote quantum devices and the ability to trust computations performed by third-party quantum cloud services. As quantum computers become more powerful and integrated into sectors like healthcare and finance, keeping data confidentiality and integrity is crucial given the risks of potential quantum attacks to existing encryption. This advance could lead to commercial plug-in devices for secure quantum access, significantly accelerating the deployment of quantum technology for end-users.
